The Jeans For Every Body. And a Bit of Help!

Jeans.  I’ve written about them in past posts.  (click on the “Jeans”) Jeans.  They have been the bane of my existence when certain styles or cuts have been popular—the “bootcut” has and will never be my friend. My hips are too large and I love my hips.  The wide leg just doesn’t work for me either—it makes me look squat.  The straight leg—ehhhh, it’s ok.

No. I do not have bootcut jeans. However, I have this pair of old bootcut athletic pants which I only wear in the house.  They are high-waisted and really make me look a good 15 pounds heavier than I really am.  The cut is not flattering at all.  And why call it bootcut when most of us wear our jeans stuffed INTO our boots?

My favorite jean is the “skinny”. There is a reason for this.  I have a curvy shape.  And even with a great of baby-birthin’ set of hips, the skinny jean lends itself well to my body type.

Wait!  I actually think the skinny jean lends itself well to most every body because this type of jean fits. It follows curves without being too tight.  The right length can be flattering with heels to elongate your body and a shorter length is great for casual days.

One of my favorite jeans look for a polished appearance.  AG’s “The Legging Ankle” super skinny ankle jean.  The length does come right at mid-ankle for me. I’m not tall and I’m not super short.  Just a hair under 5’6″.  It’s a great length!

Let’s face it. Jeans have evolved over the years. With lighter weight denim and more “give” and  stretch, they aren’t uncomfortable anymore. Nor are they as stiff!  And with the skinny jean, there are different varieties.

A recent jeans brand discovery for me is AG jeans.  I don’t know what it is, but boy, these jeans are the best fitting jeans that I’ve had in a long, long time.  Since my first purchase, I’ve gone on to add three more pair to my collection.

i-love-these-ag-jeans

Ahh. I remember it well!  My first AG Jean purchase at Nordstrom Rack.  Adriano Goldscmied thank you!

Each has a different personality, but each pair fits so well to the point that AG made a jean that is flattering on a very imperfect body.   Granted. These are not inexpensive but can be found at great sale prices both at Nordstrom and Nortstrom Rack! Come and I’ll show you.

img_9009

My first pair of AG jeans on the left.  The Legging Ankle (super skinny ankle) made of:  98 % cotton, 2% polyeurethane.  To the right is the The Legging Ankle (super skinny ankle) in a slightly different fabric blend: 58% viscose, 21% cotton, 20% polyester, 1% elastane.  This is a darker wash and more of a “dressier” jean.  I will say that the ankle length on these are a longer version. I could be because this is a size 29. I could have gone down a size though.

img_9011

Next up.  The Farrah Skinny Crop, High Rise Skinny Crop.  The size is 28R and really doesn’t fit my legs as a crop–and I’m fine with that. This is a great high waisted jean and is composed of 58% Visose, 21% cotton, 20% polyester and 1% polyurethane. To the right is The Prima Crop, Mid-Rise Cigarette Crop.  The blend is the same as the Farrah Skinny Crop.  Now. Although this isn’t a “skinny” I do like the relaxed fit.  This is a size 29 and as I’m becoming more familiar with the AG Brand, I’m finding that the smaller size works better for me.

img_8961_li

Lets take a look at the high-waisted Farrah jean. (And no way is this cropped on me!) My hips still stick out. They aren’t sucked in.  The high waist lends itself well to shorter-length shirts (i.e. the Tippi Sweater that shrunk!!)…

img_8965_li

..in addition, I still have a bit of a belly, as pointed.  Yet, this jean doesn’t come off as “mom” jeans. The fit is excellent through the trunk of the body (I also cuffed them, making them a bit more “cropped”–kind of)…

img_8964

The brand’s jeans also fit nicely around the ass. No honey, these jeans do NOT make your ass look fat!

img_8971

I love the way these jeans look!  Farrah is definitely a win in the AG jeans brand!

Below are some looks I pulled together. I didn’t use me as a model today because my hair is in rollers and I’m having a makeup free day!

img_9022

A dressy look for the office or date night.  You know I would wear this with one of my blazers!

img_9021

A bit of a more casual change up–but still with the heels!

img_9020

This Tippi is really a bright Neon yellow that matches the neon yellow in the shoes.  Friggin’ lighting!  My favorite ripped jeans with heels and pearls. I love the contrast.  There’s something about that high-low contrast that I just dig so much!

img_9016

Here’s the Prima cigarette crop. I call this my St. Tropez look!  I love this jean with the Breton striped shirt and Rondini sandals or Repettos. This look is coming to France with me  in June!

img_9015

See how the cut of the leg is a bit more relaxed?  I love how both sandals look.  Note to self:  Time to Fake Tan!!  Maybe a spray is in order!

img_9012

Change up to some colorful flats!!!

img_9013

The high-waisted Farrah. Shown with the Tippi Turtleneck that shrunk and is now somewhat “cropped” and the regular Tippi that shrunk in the wash.  These jeans saved my sweaters from being trashed! I can roll them up and wear ballet flats, or keep ’em unrolled and wear heels.  I’m not one to overdo animal prints so a leopard belt is a nice touch. And all jeans looks are mature-aged lady appropriate!

It’s important for me to write about this—especially since the fashion industry continues to ignore the older woman.  Older women can and should wear jeans like this and wear them well. Do not allow people to make you believe that a certain article of clothing is inappropriate for your age.  It isn’t!!!

Here’s what I wore Friday to the office.  My ripped jeans and…

fnlb6354

…a blue and white oxford shirt under a J. Crew Tippi sweater that didn’t shrink when I washed it!!  I went 50 shades of blue with the lighter blue Via Spiga flats!  A bit of bling with the necklace!  Age appropriate for almost 62-years old me. And you!!

img_8940

Guilty as charged for pushing the seasons.  I wore this springtime trench coat because of the blue. Somehow, on a winter day, this worked!

We deserve to be fashionable and we deserve the freedom to wear what we want.  There should be no ageism in jeans! And while I realize I’m no “expert” in the fashion industry, I’m savvy enough to know after all these years what works and what doesn’t.

I’m not doing a weight post this weekend.  My anxiety level is over-the-top. It has been since Inauguration day. That’s all I’m going to say—not because I don’t want to be political. It’s because I get too upset and I’m trying to be calm.

img_8922

Not jeans but J. Crew factory Gigi pants. I loved the bright colors in this outfit.  And since I’m not doing a weekend weight post, I’ll post this photo of some happy colors going on!

Anyway, I’ve been stress eating. And this coming Thursday evening, I will be going back to Weight Watchers as a member.  I’m a lifetime member so I don’t think I’ll have any fees to pay because I’m within my first WW goal weight. Even if I do have to pay, I don’t care. I need the extra help right now and sometimes we have to admit to ourselves that we could use a bit of help!

I’m also losing more hair these days and am depending more and more on my toppers for now.  I’m becoming more creative in styling them.  Here’s a look at yesterday’s hair!

img_8952

Uniwigs Yaki Textured Topper.  The coarse texture blends in perfectly with my bio hair.  Hey. Nothin’ wrong with a little hair assistance!

That’s it for today!  Whether we need a little help with our weight or use a bit of helper hair. It’s all good.  Help is a good thing—and we have to be honest with ourselves and know when to ask for it.  Am I right??

I’m going to help convince Bonaparte that I need a bit of Botox!! (Just kiddin’!)

The Fab Four—because “Help” is a great thing! And thanks to Reelin’ in the Years for this great clilp!

Far from perfect, but enjoying life as a non-perfect and flawed individual at 60 years young. I'm still wondering what I'll be when I grow up! The characters in my life's screenplay include my better half. He is a refined Frenchman who grew up in Paris and summered in St. Tropez. I grew up in Long Island and summered in Long Island. I am not refined. My three grown children are also a big part of my life. For their sake, they happily live where their careers have taken them! But I can still mother them from a distance! I write about the mundane. I write about deeply shallow issues. But whatever I write or muse about--it'll always be a bit on the humorous and positive side! It's all good!

  1. I have never been much of a jean person but the way you’ve styled yours might make me a convert, I will for sure check this brand out. Thank you for making jeans look chic and comfortable.

    • Catherine says:

Thanks Karen!Definitely check the brand out. The jeans actually fit the same way at the end of the day as they do in the morning–which means, they have stretch but don’t stretch out!!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  2. Leslie Preston says:

I really enjoyed this post. I think what you’re doing with all your various hair toppers looks terrific! When/if I ever lose the 20 pounds of pure fat that’s surrounding my (high) waist, I’ll be buying jeans again. Until that time, I’m wearing my boot-cut, elastic-waist exercise pants (whatever they’re called) and a hoodie to be comfortable in my own home. It’s snow time in UT….I don’t have to go anywhere.

    • Catherine says:

HI Leslie! As I write this, I am wearing a Delta Gamma Hoodie that was left here by my daughter and plaid Old Navy PJ bottoms. My comfy clothing! Ohhhhhhh..snow. So far–knock on wood, we have not had any snow accumulation all winter. I’m scared because I know it’s coming!!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  3. Mary says:

So, no mention of your ‘so called president ‘! (A better title?)
    .

    • Catherine says:

No Mary. I can’t because it upsets me too much that the neo-HItler became 45. It’s extremely upsetting to me and has turned me into a completely different person. I’ve never felt hatred the way I do now. And I don’t want to dwell on my negative feelings! So I shall put #notmypresident on hold until the bumper sticker for my car is received in the mail! XOXOXOXOXO!!!

  4. Bancy says:

Loved the post and all the fashion looks! I used to work ladies’ retail( remember the old Paul Harris stores, or didn’t they have them out east?!) Anyway, your outfit displays and accessorization is easy better than the stores!
Stressed–I hear that! Waiting for a tweet from HWSNBN about how the crowd at the Super Bowl isn’t as big as at the Inauguration!

    • Catherine says:

I remember Paul Harris. That company was responsible for the infamous J. Peterman catalog–of which I ordered clothing from! Thank you!!!! Oh please, I won’t even watch the SuperBowl this year–even though I love Lady GaGa. There is a great movie on the French channel starring Vincent Lindon. I’ll opt for that instead!! LOL!!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  5. Yvonne says:

Just back from watching the Super Bowl at a sports bar. Husband upset and not speaking st Atlanta didn’t win. Lady Gaga was very good and sent the videos live to my daughter. You look fantastic in your super dooper skinny jeans. Rockin the blue denim. I like skinny jeans but have no ankles so cannot wear anything cropped. You have lovely ankles and feet. Cheers

    • Catherine says:

Hi Yvonne. This goddamn laptop is going to be the death of my nerves yet! I replied to your comment but it got lost somewhere in WP cyberspace. I’m finding the best way to comment is in the back office of WordPress! That being said, we didn’t watch SuperBowl but I wish we had seen the half time show because everyone raved about Lady Gaga!! Oh..I thank you for your lovely compliment!!!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  6. I so agree with you about skinny jeans and how that style of jeans suits all figures and all ages. I’ve always said on my blog that less is more, as in, don’t, if you’ve got a fuller figure, wear those wide trousers (or pants as you say) that just make you look wide!!! Is it the same in the US? But outside the big cities and towns there’s a kind of a older woman’s uniform of drab wide black trousers worn when they go out and about (I see from the top of a bus as we go through two small towns before we get to Brighton). And these are usually combined with a loose top, maybe a fleece and some kind of padded beige, grey or black jacket. OMG, no! Please, as you age and maybe put on a few pounds a tighter closer fit would be so much more flattering.

I just love the combos you’ve put together. And good that you’re going back to Weight Watchers as I’m sure the group support will help s lot. Great post!!!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Penny! Ugh. Those wide leg trousers. We have a worse “older woman” fashion issue here in the states. You can see it at malls and sports events and just about everywhere. Older women wearing wide cropped pants that are made of black knit fabric. They will also don an oversized Tee shirt–usually with a Disney character and wear a windbreaker over it. It makes ME want to break wind in front of them! And foot attire is usually crew socks and sneakers. I don’t know who to blame this on. Is it that as some women age they give up on looks? Or is it that the fashion industry refuses to notice older women?? The fashion industry has no idea of the enormous amount of women who are older and who would LOVE to spend money on nice clothing. It’s awful!! Glad you are liking the combos. Yeah–I need to get back. I’m thrilled that I found my lifetime membership card so I’ll be a lot happier and have a lighter wallet when I go!!! I’ll report back on the meeting! XOXOXOXO!!!

  7. Bonnie Belza says:

I found your blog recently and LOVE the fashion advice for our age, it’s truly inspirational! I’ve been trying to get down to your size but have been overeating from the stress of 45. I really have to limit my exposure to the news (your blog is one of my alternatives!) and I’ve found that doing something (writing my congressmen, joining discussion groups, studying the other side’s viewpoint) relieves a lot of the stress. I’ve been walking a lot more too, it keeps me away from the screens!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Bonnie. I’m hoping this reply to your comment does not jump somewhere else. This laptop is driving me nuts! Honey–join the club. I’ve been stress eating garbage and all things unhealthy because of 45. He has managed to turn me from such a lovely ladylike woman into a truck-driving, roller derby amazon. I kid you not! My anger level is just sinful! And with the return to Weight Watchers I should be a calmer, kinder me!!!
But listen–I’m really happy you found this little blog and the community. It’s a good group! We agree to disagree, we share, it’s all good! I wrote a letter to Pat Tumor–I mean, Pat Toomey about voting no for Devos. I faxed all day and no answer. I mailed the letter and it’ll be too late but at least I can sleep at night knowing I did my share! I need to walk!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  8. Laurie says:

Loved your post! I will be in Paris in June too. Do you have any suggestions for curly haired toppers? I definitely need one and feel very frustrated. We have so much in common!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Laurie. Where in Paris will you be? I’ll be at CDG waiting for our flight to Nice. Unfortunately we won’t be spending any ground time in Paris in June b/c we’ll be in Theoule. We’re planning for a long weekend in the Fall for Paris. Get over to the Uniwigs site. They have an incredible selection of toppers. In the meantime, I’ll be on the lookout and will reach out to you if I find what you are looking for!! XOXOXOXOXO!!!

      • Laurie says:

Thank you for the hair suggestion . Will be in and around Paris June 13-27. Chartres, Rambouillet(family) . Was in Nice in December for the first time. It was lovely.

      • Catherine says:

Hi Laurie! OMG!! I’ve been to Rambouillet many times, Bonaparte’s aunt, Daniele Delorme and her husband Yves Robert had an estate there! Oh…Nice is fantastic!!! We will be in France at the same time but in different locations!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  9. JulietC says:

Loving the looks! I agree with the wearing of skinny jeans, I am not slim and I do not have long legs (sadly I have the long body instead and I am roughly 5ft 3) but they really do suit most women, just get the sizing right and all is good. I also have some boyfriend jeans that aren’t too baggy – they work surprisingly well. What I think most women who are less than gazelle like need is streamlining – we certainly don’t need to look like tent-legged pygmies pegged to the ground or as though we are wearing buttresses! And I also agree with the frugal fashion shopper re the type of woman wearing the wide black trousers with the baggy top and the padded top, just no – NOOOOOOOOOO! Over here I like the plainer jeans of Mint Velvet (I’ll pass on the zippy things) and some of the trousers and jeans from Jigsaw or Whistles work well too, They need some stretch and they need simplicity to suit me or I look ridiculous

    • Catherine says:

Hi Juliet. You are lucky! I LOVE the look of the boyfriend jeans but they just look horrible on me. I actually bought a pair at Gap a couple of years back and until I caught a glimpse of the back side of me in them. O.U.C.H. they went in the trash. You also said the magic word: sizing! It’s all about the sizing and fit. And different brands have different fits. That’s why I’ll load about 12 pair of jeans or any pants into my shopping cart and try them all. One brand’s 28 may fit like a 24 and another brand’s 28 may fit like a 30. I also have this “thing” about pants and jeans with the ill-fitting crotch.Ewww!!! I’m with you on the simplicity! XOXOXOXO!!!

  10. calensariel says:

You know, of all the posts you do the ones I like best are seeing you put things together and adding accessories. Keep up the great work!!!

  11. Gail Hanlon says:

Loving your blog —- so glad I found you!! The jeans guide is great. I’d already decided how great the Farrah jeans were on you before you said you liked them. I was late to the skinny party because I felt you probably had to be skinny to carry them off, but you’re right, they suit everyone. I used to love flares (in the day) and rushed out to buy them a couple of years ago when they were back, and didn’t like them at all.

    • Catherine says:

Hi Gail. I’m lemming that lace top in your latest blog post btw! And I’m glad we found each other!! It’s weird. I don’t even know why skinny jeans are called “skinny” because you really do not have to be skinny to wear them–they are just flattering! Oh..I wore bell bottoms in high school. In the 1970’s!! It’s a look that I would not dare revisit any time soon!!! XOXOXOXOXO!!!

  12. angelin2014 says:

Just last summer I started wearing jeans again after a ten-year hiatus in skirts and dresses. I discovered stretchjeans, and because I have a HUGE behind (aka barn door) and a rather tiny waist I rarely find trousers that fits me. But recently I have found some online that are a decent fit and it´s really liberating! Comfy, comfy and no need to buy tights (in our weather spray tan can only be used two months a year). So this was an interesting post! And you also remind me that I need to up my game when it comes to shoes and accessories! I hate buying shoes because of my hopeless feet but recently I found a shop that specializes in comfy fashionable shoes, so I have hope!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Angelin! I’m so glad that you found jeans again! Listen. I have the hips and no matter how wide they are, I’ll still wear the jeans. A large behind and a tiny waist make for a beautiful figure!!! LOL. I’m ready to fake tan right now!!!! Get back into those shoes girlfriend!!!! XOXOXOXOXO!!!

  13. Barbara says:

Yesss to AG Jeans! Adriano Goldschmied was the founder of the “Diesel” Brand whose jeans i loved back then.
Last year I bought a “Slouchy Skinny” in blue and a white one in distressed. Love them both to death. They are made for women with curves (I’m 5.5 and lbs.124, with butt and belly) I still own Seven’s Relaxed Skinny” which also fits great. I like Boyfriend jeans as well, but wear them only during warmer weather b/c of a bare ankle.
Skinnies are great with a pair of Chelsea boots and an oversized Cashmere V-Neck. I live in Munich/Bavaria where we do have a serious winter. Since I’m retired, this is my daily uniform.
I do love all the combos you show. You’re a real beauty, inside and out.

On age 67 I would never go for the awful old lady look you described.

AG Jeans are pricey and you are lucky to find them in the Sale.
No chance here, you have to buy the full price (up to € 300,–!!!) otherwise they are sold out.

    • Catherine says:

Hi Barbara, did you try going online to Nordstrom to see if they send items overseas? I just today, received a pair of AG’s in the mail that I ordered from an online company 6PM and the jeans were a great price. I can’t get enough of those AG Jeans. I never knew that Goldschmied founded Diesel. Ohhhhhh…you do have serious winters, but look how cozy you get to be!! Thank you so much for your compliments. I take them with gratitude!! XOXOXOXO!!!
