When I started this blog just over two years ago, I never gave much thought to social media.
My vision was to write about the life of one 59-year old woman and her misadventures and life as both an empty-nester and one of living with a Frenchman. Over time, the blog evolved into more—I started writing about fashion, cosmetics, food, traveling, and randomness but all with a sense of humor.
Me as Little Edie Beale from my post about Edie Beale as my fashion icon. It was humorous but respectful to my Edie! And it actually was one of my personal favorite blog posts!
Sounds simple. Right?
Then, as I started to become a bit (and I mean a bit) more educated about the world of blogging, and started to research on how to make my blog more “popular” (i.e. followers) it was always stressed at how important social media was. To have a successful blog, it meant taking steps to be a part of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
I get that. To a point.
I opened a Twitter account and started to “Tweet”—but realized three things. 1. I am not a celebrity nor am I a mega-blogger so my tweets basically went unnoticed. Which is fine because tweeting is too much of an effort for me. 2. Since Trump became president, I’ve tweeted some nasty stuff and saw that the nasty stuff I’ve written shows up on the sidebar of my blog. I don’t want to mix my politics with my blog because there is enough political shit roaming around cyberspace. And—I didn’t want to offend any of the more reserved readers of my blog with my tweets toward a certain political figure. 3. My Twitter Account isn’t even in my blog’s name and it’s too much of a bother to change it. So—I’ve stopped tweeting for now.
I’ll just keep my personal twitter account. It’s too much bother to have one in my blog’s name. I can’t believe I actually tweeted over 2,000 times!
I’ve been on Facebook for a few years now. And what I absolutely loved (and I say loved because I no longer feel that way) about FB was the ability to connect with friends I’ve had since my childhood days and old friends from my New York and New Jersey days.
But, FB has become a weird place. It has brought out the worst in me because of the way I feel about a certain person who was elected President. That’s all I will mention on that subject. But, slowly I noticed many “sponsored” posts popping up. I do not want to see posts about healthcare or people who need prayers (and no—I’m not against prayer. I pray all the time. I just do not want that stuff shoved in my face). I don’t want to see ads. All I want to see on my private FB page are posts from my friends and posts from those in the groups I belong to.
I‘m a fan of NARS cosmetics but I don’t want to see this on Facebook or any form of social media. Leave me alone!
Separating my private life from my blog, I do have a Facebook page for my blog. And at first, I was very “gung ho” about it. Now I’m very lazy—and it isn’t because I don’t want people to read my posts, it’s because I’ve become disillusioned with Facebook in general.
I need to get back to being friends with my blog’s FB page, but…
I don’t wanna deal with all of this! I want simplicity! This is too complicated!
And then there’s the piece de resistance of all social media (well, at least in my eyes). Instagram!
I started an Instagram account maybe a bit over a year ago in my blog’s name. The reason being that we have no internet service at the apartment we rent in Theoule but I thought it would be fun to snap pics and post them when I had the opportunity to be in an area with Wi-Fi. And I thought it would be great to have a glimpse into the lives of others through their photos.
And all was well until recently. I noticed that my favorite “feeds” from those I followed weren’t showing up and those who I follow, I follow for a reason! I love their posts and photos! I also noticed that more and more “sponsored” ads were showing up in my feed. I do not like that.
Why is this showing up in my IG feed? I am not a follower nor do I plan to be. My loyalty to scent is with Guerlain!
My suspicions were validated when I read a blog post from “Not Dressed As Lamb” The post is “Why Instagram Really Isn’t Much Fun Anymore“. Honestly, click and read her post to get a better understanding of the demise of Instagram. She’s got a nice blog and is very generous in her link ups. And her name is Catherine *ahem*. What a lovely name for a lovey woman!
My posts were being inundated with comments from sites that advertised to me I could get more “likes” and exposure if I paid them. Oh, hell no—no way would I pay for a “like”!
Uh unh. Catherine don’t PAY that game!
Nothing was in chronological order anymore!
Yeah Instagram. You are being rude by taking the people I follow regularly and hiding their feeds from me. And you are being rude with all those ads, and allowing follow-to-unfollow…
Worse yet, was the “follow-to-unfollow” trend that I was being baited with. In case you don’t know what “follow-to-unfollow” is, it is an incredibly dishonest and unethical means of getting your account numbers to rise—thusly, having your account become very intriguing to “brands”.
You “follow to unfollow” me and you will have one less follower!
A IG’er will suddenly “follow” you. And, being polite, you follow back. Many times, these are bloggers who are after big numbers. A day or so later, you will notice that same person who followed you has “unfollowed” you. This was happening quite often to me—so I did some sleuthing and discovered these Instagrammers/bloggers had something like 20,000 followers and were only following about 50 people. I became wise to that little activity and uploaded an app for that. Now if someone follows to unfollow me, I can find out who they are and “click”—their number just went down a follower. Does it make a dent in their numbers? Nope! But it makes me feel a whole bunch better!
You got that right. (Caveat–this is referring to Instagram only. I “lost” many “friends” from FB due to my politics–and I’m better off!)
My blog is my baby. I look forward to coming home from work to write. I never know what’ll pop into my head and I let my thoughts collect then start blogging. I love the people who read my blog because it’s an excellent group. We’ve become friends who’ve never met and we all respect each other.
And with or without Social Media, I’m pleased as punch to keep writing, to keep venting, to keep others laughing and to keep having fun.
With or without Social Media, I got a loverly group of Atypical60 friends!!
And speaking of fun, I did a bit of shopping for our upcoming trip. I can’t believe we leave for France in two weeks!

You will NOT believe this. I happened to stop at Primark after work on Thursday looking for another pair of those $13 jeans. Well, THIS dress was randomly hanging on a rack. It was the last one. And my size. $16 worth of heaven. I like it better than the one I bought at J. Crew! It also looks just like the one Oona bought at Zara.
Try-on’s at Marshalls. The white jeans and checked top from the middle pic came home with me and are now in the huge pile to be squeezed into the carry-on!
This hat was a great buy for $12.99. The top is SPF 50 fabric, which will also protect my fake hair from getting all tangled up like it can with straw. The brim is nice and wide to protect my face in the sun. I freakin’ love this hat. Notice the color of my “hair”? It’s the Juno wig from It’s A Wig and I got her for $9.99!
I wasn’t very good in journaling my outfits this week. Here’s Friday’s casual look. I love this sweater but, alas, it is now too warm to wear it.
This was my favorite look of the week. A pocketed skirt that I picked up last year at Uniqlo paired with a $4.00 Tee from Old Navy. Black Repettos and a French Market basket as tote gave me a bit of a Bardot vibe! (well, if Bardot wore fake black hair and was cross-eyed and wore glasses and was about 20 pounds heavier and wasn’t French!)
A maxi from last year–Old Navy gave me a day without having to shave my legs!

I love your post. IG strategy annoys me too but there’s not much to do about it. When I started blogging I also didn’t expect to get kind-of good at it. Now, 1.5 later, I purchased my very first domain for my blog. It’s been fun to blog and “meet” new people ☺️

You bought some great stuff there Catherine! A bit envious of that blouse…How are you doing about bra showing under those shoulder-showing tops? I´ve got one from Zara and I think it´s a very becoming style, after all shoulders can be very sexy:) but not so much when showing off bra-straps. Or am I just old-fashioned?
As for social media I´m just on FB and I have two blogs. One in English, my lighthearted one and one in Swedish for my writing. On FB I only comment for friends and obviously I don’t have very many (59), I keep deleting people all the time…and I absolutely refuse to add clients and other work related connections there. As for the English blog I´m erratic and just write whatever takes my fancy, so have few followers, but I don’t care. It´s just for my own amusement.
Hi Angelin. First of all I think “Age is Just a Number” is a great blog. I may not have the chance to comment as much as I should, but you should know that I am a fan! As far as the bra goes with the off-the shoulder tops, I pull the bra straps down and tuck them in. Strapless bras make my boobs look as though they have been cut in half. Or…I will take the bra off if I can get away with it! The funny thing is, the checked shirt I bought, my daughter Oona purchased the same shirt!!! Twinning!
But Social Media is such a double-edged sword. It helps us and hinders us at the same time!! XOXOXOXO!!!!

Social media is so weird! I have friends who apsolutely refuse to use it and others who clearly spend 24 hours a day posting ( oddly these same people hold full time jobs) I’ll tell you something I don’t like about FB is the urge to post TMI or ‘ news that’s not your’s to broadcast’ ASAP!!
Here is a cautionary tale: A woman I work with had a sister who, very sadly, took her own life. The deceased women’s son was on the bus checking his FB page when he sees a CONDOLENCE message from a friend….needless to say the young man thought it was a joke until he got home and there were police talking to his Dad. Apparently one of the neighbors got on the ‘horn’ right away to let the world know never suspecting that the son wasn’t yet aware of his mother’s passing.
I’ll bet stuff like that happens all the time. I am getting sick of the ads popping up too. I never did do Instagram or Twitter so can’t comment but I do carefully ‘curate’ who gets access to my FB page and have nixed friend request from ‘frenemies’ or people who I have no knowledge of or nosy ‘creepers’. People who ask to be friends,never post but know everything going on in your life, cause they’re creepin your FB page….like my former boss ( gossip queen of the mean girls)
As well I am constantly reviewing security and access to ‘who sees what’ on FB. I have also blocked individuals ( see nosy former boss above) because if a mutual friend ‘likes’ something I post it will get seen. By blocking anything with your name attached can’t be seen by the offensive party. Whew it’s a lot of work…they should be paying me!!
LOL. Momcat. I know–FB is a weird place. I am becoming increasingly cautious. On one hand, it’s great to reconnect with people and but on the other hand your information can get to the wrong people. Like you, I’m constantly checking out my privacy settings. It is a lot of work and I’m becoming fatigued!!! XOXOXOXO!!!

Hi Jenny,
Go into your privacy settings on FB there are instructions re: Who can see your stuff. You can decide only friends, public or just specific people see posts . If you really don’t want info to get to certain people you have to block them. They won’t see what you post and you won’t see anything they post. BUT if a mutual friend tags you in a photo that can be seen. I just carefully consider who I friend on FB but you can block anyone from seeing your account they don’t have to already be a FB friend.

I enjoy social media, it helps me keep up with friends and family. And I go in spells – sometimes I’ve checking all the time, sometimes only once or twice a day. I enjoy Instagram because I enjoy seeing pictures posted, but the sponsored ads do annoy me.
My blogs are my way of writing. If others read and like them fine, but I would probably post anyway …

Nice post Catherine. Also read the one from Not Dressed as Lamb, a blogger that I also follow, and I totally relate with the stuff bought here. I’ve only been blogging for a year. I enjoy getting to know other bloggers and followers. Plus as a French Canadian scientific journalist and fashion blogger it is a good way for me to practice my english writing. But Instagram as some down sides. I’m particularly annoyed with those who practice the Follow & Unfollow behavior. And there’s even worst. Some just before unfollowing take away all of their likes that they put on your pictures. So, just like you, I recently uploaded an app to gain some control. I do not like this and I prefer not to play this game. But it is not in my genes either to let others with unethical manners do whatever they want. Another thing I discovered recently is about Snapchat. Did you know that if you download the app they have control of all the pictures in your cell? Thanks, but no thanks. No Snapchat for me.
OMG. Dominique. I feel the same way you do about using that “unfollow” app. It isn’t like me to keep tabs but if someone is trying to pull a fast one on me–watch out. I won’t be played for a fool and I won’t help you with gaining numbers in an unethical way! I’m so glad we’re on the same page!
Snapchat. No. I won’t do it. It’s just too much. Besides, I posted on “snap”–it was to my daughter and her friends and I had just gotten out of the bathtub and didn’t realize that the camera was aimed at more than my face. I swear. It brought back memories of a “team Building” trip that I chaperoned when Oona was in Middle School. It was one of those Wildneress things and we stayed in cabins. I had the top bunk and when I was climbing up the bunk, my camisole top got caught in one of the ladder rungs and my boobs popped out. Those 12 year old girls had a big laugh!!! XXOXOXO!!!
I’m with you on all accounts. I’ve stopped posting on FB due to politics. And the funny thing about IG, i thought they were prostitution rings liking my post so I never liked them im return, haha! Have fun in theoule sur mer! I took my mother there a few years ago. We rented a lovely apartment and drove all over the place. She’s nearly 80 and she drove, I navigated. What an experience. We also took the ferry to saint Tropez. The return trip was so rocky and everyone was sick, except mom. She was too busy talking to everyone! Can’t wait to see your photos from the trip! By the way, how’s your father in law doing?

I couldn’t give a dog’s doodah about ‘likes’ which is why I’ve never joined fb I guess. I did investigate IG as I love photography but then it all seemed too much bother. I’m not a writer, my blog is random and posts infrequent, but it’s ok, I’m not doing it to be popular…(obvs!)
We all know those blog writers who are all ‘me, me, me’ and never leave comments on anyone’s blogs. I avoid them. I also give those blogs plastered in adverts a miss.
I guess we all have our own agenda.

I pulled the plug on Twitter – I just don’t get it. I still run my feeds through Facebook and Google+ though. The sponsored images of Instagram have intruded more and more – I use that site for monthly challenges that pique my interest. Other than that, I don’t post.
You have to cutoff social media at some point or you would drive yourself crazy trying to get likes or looks or thumbs up.
Hi Tami. Ugh. Google+. I can’t even figure that one out. I saw that I have about 8 followers on it and my reaction is what is my blog even doing there? IG’s gone too commercial. My personal FB page had dwindled due to my politics–and I’m happy. When my siblings called out my kids because they voted for Clinton. I went batshit crazy and don’t even speak to some of them anymore! I’m better off. Mess with me and it’s fine–mess with my kids and all hell will break loose!!! XOXOXOXOXO!!!!
Love the dress and the hat! I deleted my twitter and instagram accounts awhile ago, and I’m not on FB so much anymore. A lot of that has to do with a majority of my ‘friends’ having completely different world views and they can’t even have normal discussions. I haven’t been blogging for quite awhile either, but I still love reading yours!

As for social media – I am on Facebook, really have to be careful what I write now the daughter has friended me, which is a shame as she is a constant source of entertainment for me and pretty much all my friends and relatives, that said I have my facebook in lock-down, I am strict about only posting and being seen by friends, no they cannot post on my facebook (oooooh h3ll no – as far as I am concerned they can go scribble on their own walls), I consider my friends hand picked so I don’t want people taking offence – even if it is only in comments (I had to tell off 2 friends who were pro-Trump, and I told them to post their views on their pages, especially as they know me). I happily will block or hide things I don’t want in my feed – adverts, viewpoints from people I consider offensive – and I make no apology – prayers (why is it that certain people always one-up other peoples prayer requests?), poems about missed pets/family in heaven, people “praying” for the latest atrocity – splaying this stuff across facebook pages does not make people “nice”. I like my Facebook to be as shallow as possible – plants, more plants, shallow and fluffy with nice photos and I like to keep up with family on the other side of the world. I also refuse point blank to put up stuff relating to work – if my workplace think I should promote work stuff, they can get knotted, very, very rarely would I think about it and I won’t have them telling me what I can have or not.
I quite like instagram but hardly ever do much on it – I have a couple of colleagues that are great on photography and stuff so basically I am on there to admire and encourage. I don’t follow people I don’t know – my cynical inner self thinks – hmmmm who are these people??? My favourite is Pinterest – oh I love the stylish boards and the boards of good ideas – essentially I am too lazy to do much myself, I happily report things I think are spam – in fact I rather enjoy reporting spam or things I find “offensive” (basically anything with a young woman in a swimsuit where her butt checks are drooping out the skimpy pant-bottoms, or thong, reporting that stuff as spam cheers this old bat immensely).
I used to have a blog – but it was about knitting and stuff and I let it slide, sometimes I think I would like to resurrect it but hmmm not sure
As for twitter – we are meant to post stuff at work – I refuse to do this as I think most of it is utter drivel and I never read tweets, and I refuse to encourage the crazy people at work that try and encourage this

Hi there Catherine – just a word to say how much I love your blog and that I’m so pleased I found you. Have to tell you that this article “how-to-wear-a-maxi-for-women-over-50” from March 16 was a revelation to me and really shook me out of my *safe and appropriate* dress code (of a woman a decade older than you Shhh) I just thought – I’d like to try that, so I did! And ended up with 3 maxi dresses and a vintage denim jacket and absolutely love wearing them.
But, the thing I wanted to say to you is, I’m not great with social media , and I was taken aback when a couple of years ago I signed up to FB, and was rewarded with a list of people it suggested I may like to contact, but most of those on that list, other than the odd stranger, were people I hadn’t been in touch with for years, or didn’t want to be in touch with ever again, so I promptly unsubscribed.
So what I do now is read lots of blogs and twitter, though I do neither.
I read your twitter and that directs me to your Instagram which is great, but if you stop twitter(ing) how to I get to your Instagram? I did sign up to Bloglovin’ but that wanted me to select other blogs too and I only wanted yours, so I unsubscribed from that.
I’m hoping you’ll reconsider and keep twittering – it’ll make this friend from England very happy.

I’m totally with you on the follow/ u follow rudeness. So infuriating! I’ve gone off FB in recent years and actually prefer Twitter now (which I loathed before) but although this is in my blog name (as is IG) I’m lousy at the networking side of things. So if I get followers it’s great, but I just don’t have the time to solidly interact on every platform.
I saw yesterday that Russia have vending machines where you can buy IG likes!!

I love your blog — your honesty, real-woman tips, and humor are delightful and so relatable. No pretense! I only started blogging about 6 months ago, but I SO agree with your thoughts and experience with social media. I just can’t bring myself to do it – I just share my blog posts on my FB page and let it go at that. I started my blog when I left my career (gulp!) in order to have a creative outlet and to express myself in this new phase in life, and as importantly, to have a dialogue with like-minded women. I’m enjoying it so much, and learning so much.

My husband and I are going to Scandinavia in Sept and because we don’t want anyone to think we’re Trump supporters, we bought buttons to wear that say #resist. We’re also thinking of getting another one that says I ❤️ Obama. 😀 Better to be safe than sorry. Haha

Meh, I totally agree with you about FB and IG. Facebook is an annoying mess and IG’s follow to unfollow makes me want to puke all over those false people doing it. On any social media, I want to connect, even if i do it the introvert way, that is you won’t hear from me daily. But because of these punks it also gets hard to make connections, people are suspicious of accounts that have a higher follower then who they are following number (well maybe I didn’t want to follow back someone selling diet supplements or wraps, sue me).
As far as Twitter goes, you could also just delete the plug in that shows it on your site, ya know and get back to tweeting.

Hi Alexandra! Oh FB is becoming worse and worse. And every single IG ad get a “Hide Ad” followed by “I find it irrelevant”.I think if everyone did that the ads could cease altogether. I suppose it is the double-edged sword of blogging! And Oh. My. God. you are so right about those punks making it hard to get connections. I’m so suspicious of those IG numbers and I shouldn’t be.
