That Sense of Accomplishment—Guess What I Did This Weekend!!

This past weekend was a productive one.  It was that weekend where I accomplished something.

Yes. I done good by accomplishing!!

The “something” was transitioning my clothing from warm late spring and summer clothing into the cooler weather fall and winter clothing.

It’s bye-bye summer wardrobe and hello to the clothing that keeps me warm in the cold weather!

You know, the past couple of months had our weekends at the beach, having the kids visit, going to DC, and to New York and, last weekend, to visit Oona in Cincinnati to help her look for her wedding dress.  All of which were great weekends.

Pleasant Ridge, Cincinnati–a most pleasant place to spend a weekend–or longer!

And between working and busy weekends there hasn’t been much time for me to get organized.  Trust me, I’m not the most organized person on earth.  And about the only place that I am organized is at work.  My cubicle is well-organized and thought out—all to make my work day flow in an even pace.

But home is a different story.  There’s a big difference between being clean and being organized.  Our home is tidy and clean—but I’m very disorganized.

No clutter and slightly minimalist–and clean!  That’s my house!

The fridge needs to be cleaned.  The pantry needs to be re-organized.  My closets and drawers—I dunno—they just start out nice and within a matter of months, shirts that I ironed have been stuffed into the dresser and are a mass of wrinkles.

My new mantra.  I need this shirt!

And as I ironed the wrinkles out of the tee shirts for a second time, it dawned on me that I needed to take my winter clothes out of the storage bins and put the summer ones away.

It’s bad enough ironing tee shirts a first time–but the same shirts a second time??

And so, I headed out to the garage and took the bins that hold the clothing for cooler and cold weather and placed the bins in the foyer.  I was exhausted after hauling them and I figured that since the first step to transitioning the seasonal clothing was done, I could work on the remaining steps during the week.

My big haul.  From the garage to the foyer!

Yesterday was a busy day for me.  I colored my roots for the first time in three months!

I’m not coloring my hair black anymore. I’ve lightened up to brown!

After the hair was done (which is crazy because I wear wigs), I put makeup on and filmed four YouTube videos.  Three wig reviews and one recommendation for eyeshadow palettes!

I reviewed a short wig…

And a great holiday wig that can be worn many ways…

And another long bob (I’ll be writing a blog post on them)

And I finished up with a palette recommendation that Bonaparte loved because Chippy hijacked the video and I got attacked by a plant!

My intention when I was done was to write a blog post.

But then I went upstairs.  Bonaparte was kind enough to lug the bins of clothing up to our bedroom.  I honestly doubt it was his kindness but it may have been a hint to bust a move to actually take the summer clothing out and replace with the winter clothing.

After mulling it over and playing the new Candy Crush friends game for almost an hour, and realizing that Summer 2018 was gone forever, I started to take the summer clothes out of the closet!

Oh.  The fun I’m having with this game…..

But something hit me like a hurricane.  I went into working mode and started pulling clothes off hangers and throwing them on the floor like a mad woman! Piles of sleeveless dresses and shorts and lighter-than air shirts—all in a mountain you could ski down.

Then I went through the pile and did something I hadn’t done in years.  I purged.  Yes!  I took clothing that I hadn’t worn all summer—and the summer before—and the summer before that, and put it in a plastic bag to take to Goodwill.

When all was folded, I ran back into the closet and took the hangers off the floor, grouping them by color and, in a classic Mommie Dearest, Joan Crawford moment, threw the wire hangers away!

This was me yesterday!  I’m just not a fan of wire hangers. I like plastic much better–perhaps its the longing for plastic surgery in the form of a chin lift…

The bins emptied of the winter clothes, all laid nicely on our bed, I began to gingerly and carefully place the folded summer items in them for storage.

Until next year–even the clothes I never wore…

Go to sleep until next June.

Plaids came out.  Skirts and pants.  Look, I’ll be honest—I wasn’t exactly watching what I put into my mouth over the summer and I gained a bit of weight and I was anxious about the fact that my pants may not fit.  But—they did, albeit snug but they fit.  It was a warning sign for me that I desperately need to get back on track with eating in a healthier manner!

Thank God my favorite Holiday Pants fit!

And these velvet jeans still fit too.  I just may wear them to work this week!

The new pile was of dry-cleaning that was needed for a few items and other than that, I organized the clothing in the closet.

It made me want to do more.  Seriously, after the closet looked all nicely organized, I hit the drawers.  All tee shirts were colorized and re-folded.

Pants and skirts on the left and shirts on the right.  Ya think I have enough white shirts?

Oh. And I keep my work shoes at-the-ready with this over-the-door shoe pocket organizer!

Then I went into the sweater drawers and did the same.

Tees all folded–again, and colorized. Ya think I have enough white Tee shirts?

Tippi Sweaters in one drawer….

And my other sweaters in another drawer.  I should own stock in J. Crew!  That little French Hen sweater is a favorite!

And when all was done, I felt such a great sense of accomplishment!  But I know with my uncanny knack for disorganization, the drawers will be a mess within a month.  The closet—maybe not so much but the drawers definitely will!

And how crazy was it that I spritzed on the last of my “winter” scent L’Instant and opened my backup?

But it certainly did feel great as I got dressed this morning.  I wore my first cool-weather clothing of the season and realized that I did miss wearing my winter clothes.  As much as I love going barefoot and sleeveless and those great summer dresses and sandals, I love the blazers and wool skirts and the toasty feeling as the cool air touches my face!

Today’s outfit–a blazer from years past,  a wool pencil skirt, a berry sweater, fake tanned legs and nude heels.  Very Autumnal!

Speaking of other events of the weekend.  Bonaparte and I saw “A Star Is Born”.  I kept it a secret that I saw it with Oona after we picked the wedding dress!   I knew if I told him I saw the movie he wouldn’t have seen it but it was even better the second time around.

You will need a box of tissues when you go to see this.  I want these two to get married IRL–the chemistry between them was like a strong electrical currant!

If you have not seen this movie yet, please do yourself a favor and go!!!  Bradley Cooper has been robbed of an Oscar long enough. He’s got to win this time around and Lady Gaga was also Oscar worthy.

I like dirty Bradley Cooper better than clean Bradley Cooper!  Which Bradly do you prefer?

I prefer dirty Bradley.  How about you?

Back to the subject matter.  Do you feel a sense of accomplishment when you’re more organized?  Have you transitioned your wardrobe yet?

Inquiring minds wanna know!!

I bought the soundtrack from A Star Is Born–here’s one of my favorite songs.  Shallows

About Catherine

Far from perfect, but enjoying life as a non-perfect and flawed individual at 60 years young. I'm still wondering what I'll be when I grow up! The characters in my life's screenplay include my better half. He is a refined Frenchman who grew up in Paris and summered in St. Tropez. I grew up in Long Island and summered in Long Island. I am not refined. My three grown children are also a big part of my life. For their sake, they happily live where their careers have taken them! But I can still mother them from a distance! I write about the mundane. I write about deeply shallow issues. But whatever I write or muse about--it'll always be a bit on the humorous and positive side! It's all good!

  1. I haven’t transitioned my wardrobe yet because I am lucky and have 4 closets….but I do have problems getting rid of clothes…..(blame it on that Catholic school uniform in my formative years). Last January I blogged on Decluttering after having read the Marie Kondo book – The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up – whose basic principle is – if it doesn’t bring you joy, out it goes. Even though the book is over-rated and a bit OCD – it did make me more conscious of not accumulating so much stuff – as I do not want to spend 2 months decluttering my house ever again – so I try to stop and think before I buy….and not hang onto things just in case.

    • Catherine says:

LOL! I heard about the Mondo book–but there are plenty of things that don’t bring me joy such as meat pounders and many essentials–I agree she’s a bit OCD but there’s always something we can take. I try not to buy as much. This winter for clothing I’m really paring down–I went through my clothes and there’s nothing I need so we’ll see how long that train of thought lasts!!! XOXOXOXOXO

  2. Nancy says:

Did you cry too at the movie?
But if you want to see minimalistic, check my house!😂😂😂😂

    • Catherine says:

Hi Nancy. I did cry–both times but I ended up crying more after we left the movie theatre. I cannot stop listening to the cd–it’s fabulous!!! XOXOXOXO

  3. Miss Bougie says:

I don’t need to transition my clothes as I have enough wardrobe space. Lucky me! I do declutter sometimes, actually I could throw some stuff out. You’ve given me an idea there. I’ve been very lazy as of late. Our weather has been unusually warm, hot even for this time of year. Yesterday we had 26 degrees C. That’s August temperatures! Normal October temperatures would be anything between 10 and 15 to 18 degrees C. We’ve had barely a drop of rain since at least the month of June. I really notice the weather pattern changing.
Thinking of your upcoming visit to Paris, I’d like to mention the skin care brand Filorga. I don’t know whether you know about them. They are for the mature skin and have creams, serums, facial cleansers and foundations. They are sold at Parapharma and well worth a try.

    • Catherine says:

Hi B! Yeah, we were watching Le Journal last night and Paris looked like the middle of summer! I’m really excited to get back and I’ll definitely be on the search for Filorga! Our earth’s climate is not changing for the better and it’s sad!!! XOXOXOXO

  4. Fiona says:

I finished the job I started last week after seeing your IG, so thanks! I’m just the same Cathe, things are tidy and organised now but in a month or so, it’ll be like I never did it, but it feels good to donate several bags of clothing and clutter to charity. I wish I could be one of those Marie Kondo types whose drawers and cupboards are never anything less than immaculate….never gonna happen. I watched Bradley Cooper’s interview on French tv, he’s good!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Fiona. I can’t be a Marie Kondo type. It’s too much for me but I wish I could STAY organized–that’s the issue. Oh..my cupboards–you don’t want to know!!! Bradley speaks French very well–he’s so talented and he can sing!!!!!!!!! XOXOXOXO

  5. Well first of all I have to say how impressed I am that you iron your tee shirts! Wow! I’m so lazy, I always say if I had a big, beautiful laundry room and could keep an ironing board set up all the time I’d iron more. It’s not happening.
Anyhow, I do feel such a sense of accomplishment when I get my clothes organized and under control. In FL we don’t have wardrobes to switch out but I love a good purge. Honestly I was on top of the world yesterday because I returned two library books and a bunch of clothes to Old Navy. It doesn’t take much to impress me!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Kellyann! LOL. I do my ironing downstairs in the family room watching TV!! it’s so pathetic but I have the need to iron everything I wear. My mother is to blame!!! XOXOXO

  6. Momcat says:

Yes I gotta get to this…I cleaned my closet out in the spring and had THREE garbage bags of stuff for the Goodwill but hey presto I opened my closet door yesterday and it looks like things have multiplied (so THAT’S what clothing does when the closet door is closed!!) Closets are like purses, the bigger it is the more stuff you put in it. I do keep some things that I haven’t worn in years..and I have NO IDEA WHY! I like the idea of separating everything out into Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter (although I have a lot of stuff I do wear year round.) A ‘capsule wardrobe’? Can’t get my head around that because in the end it lacks imagination and a true sense of style. Anyone can buy 2,000.00 of Eileen Fisher and make it work, she has a ‘system’ Really having an eye, that’s style! You have it girl, love the autumnal outfit, not a brown, rust or burgundy on you!

Oh yeah, B.C could leave his boots under my bed any day!!! My husband and dog might have something to say about it though…..

    • Catherine says:

Hey Momcat! It’s so true about the clothes we haven’t worn in years. When I took the summer clothing out of the closet, I was shocked at how much I never wore but wore the same items on repeat. And when I assessed my winter clothing, I didn’t have as much as the summer clothes but I can get more mixes out of the winter clothes Ugh. I’m no Eileen Fisher fan–the clothing is too boxy and loosey goosey for my taste–they aren’t even stylish. I’m glad we are on the same page with that!! And yes Mr. Cooper is quite the looker!!! XOXOXOXO

  8. Margaret says:

Yep I’m in the process of changing out my closet also. I threw out the wire hangers a long time ago and got the ones made by Joy Mangano. They really do make a big difference in increasing the amount of closet space and making it look more organized even when it truly isn’t (I’m not one to sort clothes by color, etc because it just gets messy again very quickly). Love those holiday pants!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Margaret! I need to order those Mangano hangers. I’m taking bets on how long it’s going to be before my closet is a complete mess again!!! Thank you–those pants are the bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XOXOXOXO

  9. Juliet says:

We are still in the middling temperatures that pass for summer in Glasgow – this summer it has actually been hot but that is so unusual, so no transition here yet. However the daughter has gone down to Bristol to do a masters – that felt like a major clear out – the amount of stuff one small dainty female has!!!! Next thing she emails to say she hasnt got enough clothing, truly our house feels empty so I have no idea what all that fabric was. Bless her

I do feel it is transition time for personal fragrances – definitely moving towards colder weather perfume

    • Catherine says:

Hi Juliet. Yeah–what’s going on in Europe and the UK with the weather??? It’s still summer over there and I was actually chilly when I left the office earlier this evening! Your daughter and Oona are of the same mold I see!!!!!!
But I’m so glad that you are a seasonal scenter too!!!!!!!!!! XOXOXOXO

  10. Renee in Northern California says:

At the moment I’m still wearing shorts…temperatures are in the mid 80s! In the past few years my closet rotation has been done later and later as it is warmer (hotter) longer into the Fall. Lately, I’ve been doing a good purge of all things in and outside of (side yards, shed) my house. Last week I started the crappy project of sorting/purging old files and it is a boring, tedious chore. Can’t wait to feel the relief when it’s accomplished, tho!! Then it will be time to tackle the garage, ugh…lol!
Looking forward to seeing the movie!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Renee. It’s funny because when we moved into our home three years ago, we purged so much and now I feel that we could use a second household purge. Thing is, I’m so tired after working all day that I can’t be bothered!!!! XOXOXOXO You will LOVE the movie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
