Shit Old Ladies Do

I’m becoming increasingly pissed off at the way women over 50, or in my case, women 60 and over, i.e. OLD LADIES are treated.

The fashion industry sucks when it comes to older women. I’m not talking haute couture—let’s face it, the great majority of us cannot afford the complex, largely hand constructed clothing items that is only within arm’s reach of wealthy society chicks and trashy celebrities.

Tilda for chanel

While I AM thrilled that Karl Lagerfeld has used Tilda Swinton in ads, she is just a minute amount of older women in fashion ads–and Tilda is a great example of beauty over 50!

Mass-market fashion is geared toward youth.  How often do you see older women modeling today’s clothing?  The fashion industry seems to think any woman over 40 is ready for embellished sweatshirts and elastic-waist, ill-fitting pants.  Where’s the respect?

Old lady friends-have you tried to find a really cute-on trend skirt or dress recently? Yeah.  I thought so. You need a complete wax job on your origin of the world in order to even sit down in one of those shorter-than-hooker bottoms!

Miniskirt

Most of us would need a complete wax job just to be able to sit in a skirt this short.  The mass-market fashion industry has to get the “woman-as-hooker” visual from their pea-sized brains! Start producing more refined clothing–and not just geared for young women!

Cosmetics companies are another bone of contention. I’m a makeup junkie. I’m also entering into my 61st birth year.   I spend far more (of Bonaparte’s) money on cosmetics and beauty products than younger women do because I need them to enhance the features that were once– well, kind of pretty.  No matter how many creams and lotions I apply to my dry-as-the-Sahara face, nothing short of a face lift and fillers are going to bring back the youthful dewy complexion that once was mine.  So don’t even give me your false advertising.  I’m too sage and wise to fall for it.  Stop using 20 year old models to advertise anti-aging. And STOP with the “anti-aging” label for crissakes! Your creams will help smooth lines for a bit and hydrate, but they ain’t gonna stop the aging process!

Dermaveratrol-com-Anti-Aging-Cream-Monthly-Subscription-Club-scambook-group-4f4c0a7b6f0b0

THIS IS NOT AGEING SKIN!!  This ad for skin cream?  It does NOT give the effects of injections or surgery nor will it replace lasers. Do these people think we are idiots?  What does this model’s skin REALLY look like without the photo retouch or the makeup???

Old Ladies do no makeup

THIS is an ageing face.  Blotchy. Some wrinkles. Jowels.  No fillers. No makeup.  THIS is an ageing face that uses creams and lotions. And the majority of women who use those creams and lotions look more like me when they wake up..not the photoshoped model with makeup!

Society in general just treats us like old cows to be sent to pasture.  Corporations do NOT want to hire us because of our age—and anyone who doesn’t believe that is a moron!  It is true.  We are overlooked and ignored in the workforce.

cows out to pasture

Society just wants to put older women out to pasture–just like these cows!  Hmmm..they could use a bit of mascara!

We old ladies don’t like the way we’ve been treated.

But—here’s some shit that old ladies do—so read along and if you are younger, give your mom a kiss and a hug and appreciate the genes she passed down to you.   If you are an older male blogger, tell your woman how beautiful she is and treat her like the princess she should be treated as.   If you are in the cosmetics or fashion industry, take a good look at your older buyers and start to cater to them.   If you are in corporate HR or a hiring manager—I cannot even print what I think about you.

Anyway, here’s some good shit that old ladies do:

Old Ladies buy bras and underwear from Victoria’s Secret. Sure we may not look like the VS Angels, but the underwire bras, along with the chicken cutlets we insert give our saggy girls some well-needed lift at a far less expensive price point than a tit job.  Old ladies also wear thongs. Panty line has no age limit. And yet, some of us old ladies love to go commando at times!

Victorias secret and chicken cutlets

See the pretty VS logo in the middle of this bra? It’s a lovely over-the-shoulder-boulder holder, isn’t it?  Tons of padding to help the girls stand up–and for extra oomph we get to insert the little chicken cutlets. Far less expensive than a boob job!

Old ladies do the bouncy-bouncy. Some old ladies do it with old men.  Other old ladies do it with younger men.  There are the old ladies who do it with other old ladies and some who even do it with younger women. And some older women do the bouncy-bouncy by themselves—sometimes when you gotta do it right, you gotta do it yourself

Yes. Older ladies do “it”. And have fun too!

Old ladies wear skinny jeans. From Old Navy Rock Star jeans to the higher end Paige jeans.  That’s right. We be rockin’ the well-rounded old lady booty in those tight denims. I’m shakin’ my groove thang. How about you?

old ladies do 024

I am an old lady. I rock the skinny jeans. Here I am rocking my Gap skinny jeans with pewter Ivanka Trump pointy-toed pumps, a brown GAP belt and a crisp white button down shirt from Ann Taylor. I think the look is nice and classic. It is a look that can be worn on women of ALL ages!

skinny jeans ass

My old lady booty can shake and groove just as much, if not better than, my younger peers!

Old ladies love their bar drinks just as much as young ladies do.  Young ladies refer to it as “drinking”. Older, more mature women refer to the beverages as “cocktails”. It’s more refined. You can learn a thing or two about refinement from an older woman!

refined cocktails

Put down the Bud Light and Heinie’s young ones! Start to drink like a REAL woman!

Old ladies do style so well!

Sartorialist-older-model

In this great photo from  The Satorialist this old lady is rockin’ some serious street fashion! I wanna hang with her!

Ines-de-la-Fressange-x-Uniqlo_exact780x1040_p Roger Vivier shoes

Inès de La Fressange is the epitome of great French style..actually universal style.  Simple chic….

This old lady can multi-task the Hermes scarf! One day a headband and the next day a most excellent and stylish cover for hiding turkey neck–and more budget friendly than a neck lift!

Old ladies do love music—all genres—especially classic rock. Give us a few cocktails and we’ll be hittin’ that air guitar better than any 20 year old boy!

Hendrix

How many old ladies are STILL crushin’ on Jimi? Huh?   Our rock music rules!!!

Old ladies do have fun with cosmetics!

That’s right.  Just a small sampling of the many cosmetics in the makeup room of Atypical60!

See how lovely my old lady eyes turned out this morning?

Marc Jacobs highlighter and contour

Marc Jacobs contour and highlighting powder duo. This is greatness. My color is 40!

Old Ladies do contour

Contouring is great because it slims down my face–and after all the weight I gained, I’m so happy that something on me looks thinner!

Old ladies do love to style their hair-whether it’s their real hair or fake hair! It’s all fun!

All made up and styling my REAL hair today!  All I do is finger comb and then tease it a bit on top.

Me in wig 2

..and some days, I just want to wear fake hair!

Old Ladies can curse better than a member of an inner city gang.  Just ask anyone who knows me!

Some old ladies do smoke. I’m jealous.  Seriously. If I were not such a hypochondriac and afraid of getting sick, and if cigarettes didn’t cause wrinkles, and if cigarettes were not so expensive, I would be smoking like a steam pipe! Smoking would curb my ravenous appetite.   If I have an 80th birthday, I want a pack of Marlboro Lights and a bottle of Jack Daniels to celebrate!

Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchell smokes..and has since she was about 13! She is one incredible older woman!

Old ladies do get manicures and pedicures.  They like to take care of their hands and feet!

Nice feet

These feet look a lot younger than their age. That’s because I don’t wear socks in the winter. Bare is the way to go..all year!

Old ladies do run for President–and hopefully one WILL be President!

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton takes part in a Center for American Progress roundtable discussion on "Expanding Opportunities in America's Urban Areas" in Washington.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton takes part in a Center for American Progress roundtable discussion on “Expanding Opportunities in America’s Urban Areas” in Washington.

If Bernie doesn’t get the nomination, my vote will definitely go with Hillary!

Old ladies (and old men) do eat dinner later, much later than 4:00 in the afternoon. Please get that straight.  We appreciate fine dining and fine wine.  The majority of us do NOT go to Country Buffet for the early bird special!

Bibou. Wine that we took with us

No early bird special for THIS old lady and Bonaparte!  We start a late dinner off with a fine wine!

Old ladies do like to watch cool TV shows.

mozart-in-the-jungle

…and the fact it isn’t on Network TV makes it even more cool!

Old ladies do love to wear those heels and wear them well.  We do love our ballet flats too—but make sure they are good ones—like Repettos!

Heel of the day

Fun shoes like this aren’t just for young feet…..

Repettos

..and the Repetto Ballet flats are great for travel and walking around city streets all day!

Old ladies do love a good retro look.  Miniskirts, boots and the long coat. Honey’s we started that look way back in the late 1960’s through the early 1970’s.  It is not a new look.

Mini tights boots belt long coat.

One of my favorite looks since I was a junior in high school. Over-the-knee boots, black tights, gray mini (from Banana Republic) Black turtleneck (Old Navy), Brown Belt (Gap), Brown long coat (which I stole from Bonaparte–he got it in France many years ago. It’s mine now)

God may have created women, but Bardot created that iconic big, teased, messy, I-just-rolled-out-of-bed hair and look.  I’m channeling it in a black-and-white, new wave French film kinda way!

Basically, old ladies do the same shit that everyone else does–so don’t exclude us!

In honor of the sexy older woman, here’s the wonderful Dalida with ” Il Venait D’avoir 18 Ans. A song about a woman in love with an 18 year old boy! Oh lala!

About Catherine

Far from perfect, but enjoying life as a non-perfect and flawed individual at 60 years young. I'm still wondering what I'll be when I grow up! The characters in my life's screenplay include my better half. He is a refined Frenchman who grew up in Paris and summered in St. Tropez. I grew up in Long Island and summered in Long Island. I am not refined. My three grown children are also a big part of my life. For their sake, they happily live where their careers have taken them! But I can still mother them from a distance! I write about the mundane. I write about deeply shallow issues. But whatever I write or muse about--it'll always be a bit on the humorous and positive side! It's all good!

  1. I love your selfies, and you are so stylish, but next time, can we please see some photos of you as a young lady? We are all young inside of course . . .

  2. Jane Billman says:

Love it! I am a huge fan of Diane Von Furstenberg she embraces her age …and is chic and hip … i am intrigued by the way she wears her fashions. You are spot on – older women want to be fashionable and deserve to have choices that embrace current trends. Woo hooo keep it up girl! XO Jane

    • Catherine says:

Hi Jane! I’ve loved Von Furstenberg ever since the original wrap dress–which I had and used to wear to work many many years ago. I should have saved those dresses! She IS an incredible woman who is ageless. I swear, J. Crew is my shop of choice because the clothing is classic. I cannot go into a department store for clothing anymore. Even Nordstrom, which is a great store, has either “too-young” crap or “matronly”. It’s unbelievable! If I had won that gazillion dollar lottery, I would have created a clothing line geared for women our age! XOXOXO!!

  3. You got style lady. Love the post.

  4. calensariel says:

I read the title and fell apart laughing. I may have to come back and read this tomorrow. Naw! I gotta go read it now! LOL

    • calensariel says:

I ADORE Diane Keaton. You remind me of her. You just have that same indomitable spirit as her and the same sassiness as Cher. LOVED it! Drollery came upstairs and I was laughing. He said to Brandon, “She’s reading HER blog again!” They’re good for me at bed time. I go to bed with a smile on my face. 😀

      • Catherine says:

Thank YOU! I adore Keaton. Bonaparte was seated next to her at a dinner honoring his grandfather many years ago and said she was a great person! Who doesn’t love Cher? I’m so glad that I put you to sleep with a smile. That is a GREAT compliment and I fully accept it! XOXOXOXO!!!

      • calensariel says:

Catherine, you have been one of those blessings who has come into my life this past year along with Plato. In watching you, I am learning how to not take myself so seriously. I don’t know if you realize you even have that gift…

      • Catherine says:

Cheryl. Stop it! You’re making me cry–I’m so touched by what you say about me. Shucks!!! I thank you from my heart. I’m so glad to have met you! XOXOXO!!!

      • pats says:

At 62 I sometimes go to bed with a book, sometimes with a 55 year old man, and sometimes with just me. I love the freedom to be older, a little wiser and have the choices I have now.

  5. Hi Catherine Another funny and astute post! And you look great! Yes, I’ve written about this myself. The fashion media really ignore us – but we want fashion and makeup just like any other woman. Yoo-hoo we’re over here (waving frantically in expectation – sigh) xxx

    • Catherine says:

Penny. Right??? The fashion media ignores us but at times, keeps us at bay with a one-in-two-million ad of an “older woman”. It is so patronizing! That’s one of the reasons I stopped reading Vogue. I’m tired of all the YOUNG celebrities that Wintour places on the covers. She should know better–she’s old as dirt compared to the D-listers she splashes throughout the pages! And I say that in an appropriate manner. I stopped reading most fashion magazines because of this. And don’t get me started on that “More” magazine that is SUPPOSED to be geared toward older woman–it really is another patronizing publication. The articles in THAT magazine have THIS hypocondriac thinking very bad things! I’m going to check out the makeup ine of your friend BTW!!! XOXOXOXO!!

  6. junedesilva says:

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post!! I’m sixty-two & agree with everything you say. I feel I have earnt every line & wrinkle & I am not ashamed of them. However, I always want to look my best for ME! I adore clothes, makeup etc but don’t like being patronised. Thank you for your stimulating and hilarious thoughts. Keep rocking! June X

    • Catherine says:

Hi June. I’m so glad you like this posting. See–you look a lot younger. Do these cosmetic companies think we are all badly permed, plain, matronly ladies who walk around in orthopedic shoes all day? Give me a break. I will keep rocking my dear!! XOXOXOXO!!

  7. I want to be as cool and pretty as you when I am older, you give me hope for the future of old ladies everywhere!

    • Catherine says:

Thank you! The future of old ladies is important. Remember we old ladies were young ladies once! And we still think the same! And we still like to dress the same with perhaps a bit more length in the skirts! I just wish cosmetics companies and clothing manufacturers would listen to what we have to say! XOXOXO!

  8. JC says:

What cutlets do you recommend :)? Great post! The benefit of age-I will wear and do what I want!

    • Catherine says:

JC. I got them so long ago that I cannot remember the brand name and the little case that they are housed in has no information. I’m so sorry but if you can find some and stick them into your bra, I can tell you they add a nice lift! XOOXOXOXO!

  9. Caroline Wadsworth says:

Absolutely love this article, for me in my 60’s I still want to look & feel good, still have a young family ( took on 3 grandchildren) , boundless energy, still work, travel & do nearly everything I did as a youngster, why not ? Maybe the mini skirt & hot pants have gone but I love fashion, like good quality make up, good hair styles & yes highlight my hair and I want to wear clothes that make me feel good about myself . I refuse to ‘ fad away’, be forced to wear dowdy clothes that hang like a sack with over sized knickers or ugly shoes nor be fobbed off at cosmetic counters by young girls with no respect . Yes I am a product of the swinging 60’s and want to keep on rockin’ , why ever not? I would walk that cat walk full of pride I have reached 60 plus & happy to embrace a new era seeing women have stylish clothes designers should feel they want to ‘ show off ‘ on the older woman and make up companies & hair stylists showing how beautiful you can still be regardless of age . Age is a number but you do not have to wear it in !

    • Catherine says:

Caroline. I love you! I love and agree with every single word you wrote…especially about the S/A’s at the makeup counter! OMG! You have NO idea how many of those younger S/A’s are supreme bitches–but you know what? I’ve gotten “gifts” from store managers because I WENT TO THE STORE MANAGERS and voiced my concern about the agist S/A’s! Oh yes I did! I feel the right to fight for justice–especially when it concerns beauty products. The next time that happens to you, march to the store manager or email or post on the company’s FB page! Loud and proud! And I will always be a dedicated follower of fashion (even though they “won’t seek me here nor there”!) XOXOXOXO!!!

  10. Love all your comments you give hope to all over 60’s life is for living whilst looking good. You tell the truth like no one else. Love it. Xx

    • Catherine says:

Thank you Elaine! Now if we could only get those cosmetics and fashion morons to see the real truth–then maybe things will change! I’m so glad you enjoyed! XOXOXOXO!!!

  11. carylbeach says:

Just discovered your blog- power to all old ladies everywhere! 🙂

  12. You Rock It GF!!! I just commented on another blog about age…I said I’m going to be turning 53 next month,,I’ve ripped up,and burned the book on ‘how to be 53’ and writing my own!!!! 😄😄😄

  13. DJ RIDER says:

This is the way I feel 😠😠😠😠

  14. robjodiefilogomo says:

Great post!!! This is exactly how we all should be thinking!! Do you happen to have the link for that image from the Satorialist? I’d love to use it to show at a talk I’m giving—to highlight how shoes can make a difference!! Thanks jodie
    http://www.jtouchofstyle.com

    • Catherine says:

Hi Jodie. I”m so glad that you enjoy the post. Click on the blue “Satorialist” underneath the photo. It’ll bring you to the site. It’s a GREAT site full of fantastic photos! I’m checking out your link too! Thanks! XOXOXOXO!

  15. Judy says:

Oh Catherine, I am so thrilled to have discovered you! I laughed out loud so many times while reading this, and so look forward to receiving new posts. Now I have the fun of going back through the archives – will do this with a glass in my hand and enjoy every word. Thank you for being there and speaking for the silent majority – I’m from the UK and having shopped at Mary Quant. the Kings Road and Carnaby Street in the 60’s, succumbing to old lady fashion is not for me. Three cheer for old ladies!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Judy! It’s so nice to meet you! Hmmmm..it is about aperitif time in the UK right now so please–grab a nice bottle of wine and have fun going through my thoughts. I hope you love Ray Davies as much as I do (He’s mentioned in a couple of my posts. I’m in love with him). I wanted to BE Mary Quant when I was a young girl! All my friends and I coveted “The London Look” and to this day, I still love that look! And we old ladies ARE the silent majority–it kills me. Sting talks about his tantric yoga sex and old Trudy, his wife, never even brings up the subject of ageism! I speak for the voice of the normal person! Hope you enjoy and have some good laughs! XOXOXOXO!

  16. Judy says:

OMG, whenever “You Really got me”, “Sunny Afternoon” or “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” is played on the local oldies radio station, I am straight back there, in my mini skirt, back combed hair and Dusty Springfield eye makeup, singing every word. Those really were the days. It’s a little early for the wine but in a couple of hours it won’t be! Thanks, Catherine.

    • Catherine says:

Judy. I live for The Kinks. In fact, all three of my kids (now grown) are huge fans due to growing up with me singing every single Kinks song in existence. My middle son thought his name was “Wonderboy”!! I kid you not! And Dusty–my ex-husband gave me a “best of” a couple of years ago for Christmas. We may be exes, but he still knows my musical taste! I love it! XOXOXOXO!

  17. Judy says:

    Fabulous!

  18. Arleen says:

Catherine; When I read your blog it was like you were saying everything I have wanted to say to so many retailers and fashion designers. I am 64 years young and I too love make-up and fashion. I too spend allot of my money on these items. I hate having a 19 year old at the make-up counter tell me how glitter eye shadow will make me look younger. Bullshit! I will make me look like a freaking clown! My favorite, is the younging in the clothing store who is telling me that I need to wear one of those very short see-your-everything skirts. No, Honey, I do not make my living walking the streets. Love your blog You go girl 60 is not dead yet!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Arleen. You are so spot on about the S/A’s at the cosmetic counters and the clothing departments! It never ceases to amaze me at how a 19 or 20 year old seemingly “knows” what we want! Trust me on this. I’ve had many an argument with cosmetic S/A’s. It’s disgraceful–and don’t even get me started on the clothing! I’m glad to make you see you are not alone. We are a large, large group of great and beautiful women! XOXOXO!!

  19. So true just loved it lol

  20. spearfruit says:

LOL, always fun to read your posts. Mama, you got it going on! 🙂

  21. cheryl lewis says:

That was great i wear skinny jeans etc im 58

  22. Marie-Louise says:

Absolutely love your blog, you go girl. I really know where you are coming from I’ve just turned 69. I’m a nana but don’t like to look like one. Live in New Zealand. Go the older woman.

    • Catherine says:

Go the older woman from here to New Zealand! We need a world war against ageism and against women over 50 being treated poorly. I’m getting my girls from all over included..join my mission! OXOXOXO!!!

  23. Carol says:

YOU are an inspiration, my dear Catherine. I just love that you’re so comfy in your own skin and don’t give a shit what anyone else thinks. If more people had your attitude, this world would be a much better place. I am blessed to call you “friend” and aspire to be your cool, fashionista younger sister! <3

    • Catherine says:

Thank you Carol! You “get” me and I’m so happy that you do! It’s true though. I really don’t give a shit (which is probably why nobody will hire me). I think more people need to think the same way, but that’ me opinionated self talking–Heheheheheee!! I’m now bringing you into my family has my cool and very much a fashionista (me with NOLA accent) “younga sista”! XOXOXOXO!!

  24. Glenda Smith says:

Same issues in New Zealand! Took my 92 yr old mum shopping and she asked me if she was too old to wear white jeans. I asked if she liked them. “Yes, I think I do” she replied. “Well Mum, they don’t come with an age recommendation so go for it” I told her. Why on earth do we even buy into this marketing crap of “dressing for your age”? DRESS FOR YOURSELF! Love yourself and the rest will spill over to those you come in contact with. Glenda.

    • Catherine says:

Glenda! I do hope that your mom ended up buying and rocking those white jeans! That “your age” garbage isn’t limited to clothing either. I’ve heard SO many women around my age who tell me they would LOVE to grow their hair but they are “too old” for long hair! Who tells them this shit??????????????????? You like long hair–wear it long! If it has to grow out–get a wig! There are no rules! And I think it’s a riot that the fashion industry sets rules like this when more than half of that industry are so pretentious and phoney. We need more truth! I think your mom is a cool lady and I think you are an even cooler daughter! XOXOXO!

  25. Judy says:

    Another fantastic post!

  26. LosiLosLoco says:

Well, I definitely have learned some things from you Catherine! Sure have. Old ladies do rock! Hello? Where do you think I got some of my wisdom from at such a young age? My elders and more specifically the ladies because men seem to be reserved in their older years. Whatever.
You bring up a good point. The world kinda turns a cold shoulder to the elders in terms of what they can show off about themselves. Nothing is really catered to them. A shame really but, hopefully that will change! You rock Ms. Gorgeous!

    • Catherine says:

Oh my little Pineapple. You are wise beyond your years and your elders–especially the elder ladies in your family–did an epic job in raising you! Change will come and it will start with the younger generation taking note of the older generation! We all need to treat each other respectfully–but the oldies are certainly goodies! XOXOXO!!!

  27. Catherine,
I’m 70 and still rocking it. So glad to find a kindred spirit; learning so much from you. You are beautiful!
    Ruth

    • Catherine says:

Hi Ruth–and it is a pleasure to meet you! Keep rockin’ it at 90. Everyone NEEDS to know that we are here and we are rockin’ more than anyone else!!! Thank you! XOOXOXOXO!

  28. Wow…your style rocks! I love all your looks. 🙂

  29. Great post. I enjoyed it a lot!

  30. animar64 says:

    You’re my hero!

    • Catherine says:

Thank you! Now if I could just get the word out to the world, it would be a better place with more vocal and beautiful “old ladies”!!!!!! XOXOXO!

Which lead me here to read your post – I so love all your looks and style examples – you rock it, sister!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Jeannie. Oh. I was so glad to see that article on Warning Curves Ahead. One of my friends posted it on FB and I read it and was blown away! I’m so glad that you clicked on the link to my blog post and enjoyed. Thank you for your positive compliments and we older ladies will continue to rock it and set the tone for the next older generation! XOXOXOXO!!!

  36. Caela Bialek says:

Thank you for this!! I’m 21, but I won’t be baby-faced forever. We need more awesome old ladies like you telling it like it is and making it clear that, turkey neck or no turkey neck, we all want to feel spectacular and do whatever the hell we want. Rock on 🙂

    • Catherine says:

Caela–you are an extremely pragmatic and intelligent young woman! Hopefully by the time you reach the age that I am now, things will change. People will wake up and realize that with equality for all, it really is “equality for all except older people”. I’m rockin’ baby! I’m a rockin’! Thank you for your very kind words! XOXOXOXO!!!

Omg, I want to smoke too. And have a cocktail with you. Great post.

  38. Lynda Ashley says:

Hi Catherine, I was reading That’s Not My Age’s post and saw your comment with a link to this post and what a fabulous discovery you are! I’m 75, much older than you and my style is very similar to yours and, whew, someone who ‘gets’ me!! So, so tired of being invisible. Thank’s for noticing me/us old ladies!

    • Catherine says:

Hi Lynda! Oh. I’m so glad that you clicked on the link! I LOVE Alyson’s blog. She’s very cool–but I wish she embraced dyed hair more! Hey. You are 75 years YOUNG girlfriend! And I love and adore when I learn that others have the same style as I do–it makes me feel that my rants are not for naught!!! You are welcome–we OLD ladies need to stick together and support each other! I hope you enjoy other posts I’ve written on this subject! XOXOXOXO!!!

  39. Linda Waldon says:

I enjoyed reading your post SO MUCH! You’re someone I would love to hang out with for a day and laugh my head off. I became a stylist in my 50s — sort of stumbled upon this new career which suits my artist, nurturer, fashionista, teacher personality. I’ve been in countless closets with women who 1) hate their body changes and don’t know what the f@ck to wear, 2) feel frustrated by the fashion industry that caters to the young, and 3) are the most AMAZING, TALENTED, KICK ASS women on the planet. I guide them to see themselves in a new light and choose clothes that make them feel powerful and visible. Beauty is something that emanates from within, so when women feel beautiful inside and show their love and generosity toward others, they are beautiful on the outside. My job is to help them discover their beauty inside and out. This is also why I LOVE thrift and consignment store shopping, because that’s where you can find the treasures and one-of-a-kind pieces. I recommend that we build our wardrobe around foundation pieces and then add pizzazz with accessories and things like the sequin blazer in That’s Not My Age article. I will be an avid reader of your posts now that I’ve found your hilariously insightful viewpoint on aging! Here’s my style your way to success website, http://www.LindaWaldon.com.

Hi There Linda! Oh girlfriend. I would have a great time with you!! Please–the fashion industry, as well as the beauty/cosmetics industries are so full of shit. They think we older women are a bunch of morons they way they advertise about “anti-aging” products and show twenty or thirty-year women as models. I’m so sick of it. And fashion? I’ve been reading about “Trendsetters”–they are all young models who are thinner than a tampon in it’s little tube. It upsets me to no end because it is such subtle cause for body shaming any woman of any age who isn’t 6 feet tall and has an eating disorder. And forget the older woman. The fashion industry all but ignores us–thinking that women over 50 don’t bother to shop for clothing unless they are celebrities or heiresses. It is vile and disgusting. It makes me want to picket naked in front of all the fashion houses.
I think it’s great that you are giving women the gift of self-esteem and making them realize just how beautiful they really are. I’m heading over to your website now!! I want to visit!! XOXOXOXO!!!

In reading the latest post on “That’s Not My Age”: http://thatsnotmyage.com/beauty-at-every-age/where-are-all-the-senior-beauty-consultants/

I KNOW–I am still trying to figure out the nuances on rebloging—, I decided to reblog one of my favorite posts because I’m becoming increasingly frustrated that companies continue to NOT pay attention to we older women. Have a second helping!!

Hi Julia! Thank you! I’m glad that you loved the post. It’s very important that we older ladies get the recognition we so deserve. Oh..the Red Hat–I think it’s a club. Yeah. I think that’s a great group of ladies..but I think their ideas may be slightly different than mine. I don’t think they are militants! Thanks again and I hope you read and are entertained by some other posts in which I rant and rage!! XOOXOXOXOXO!!!

Hi I just ran across this blog today. How great is to know I am not alone in my thinking about age and clothes shaming by designers and also other older women. I realized at 21 that I wouldn’t be a problem if I lived to become an older woman which I am now because I would still love to dress and look good. I’m sexy and slim and I wear bikinis and skinny jeans, leggings and above knee skirts cause my legs are good. I prepared for aging as I aged,I’m proud of me,myself and I. I don’t color my hair because my hair hates it. I dance, run around with my 2 young grandkids, wear jewelry, don’t wear makeup except lipstick and brow grooming, walk everyday,pray,laugh,mani/pedi bi weekly. No one has the right to tell or judge anyone else how to look, what to wear, drink, eat when you are of adult age. The world is so confused. But keep your confused thinking to yourself. Don’t listen to ageist thinking or put down.

    • Catherine says:

Hi Njera! Oh..you are definitely NOT alone! Like you, I wear short skirts and heels and bikinis and skinny jeans. I’m not stopping to be me! And the fashion/beauty industries should be aware of this. My letters and emails to: e.l.f, IT, Ion, and many other companies practically begging them to not ignore us have all gone unanswered. It it truly disgusting. …….We have to keep a positive outlook thought! Ageism is the ism that is always swept under the carpet!!! XOXOXOXO!!!

  49. Just discovered this blog thanks to your reply on “That’s Not My Age” and have had so much pleasure reading it. I am 63, and TOTALLY on board with everything you said! (Could use some more “bouncy-bouncy” in my life!). Thank you!

HI Linda! I’m soooooo glad that you read my post. I’ve basically had it. And as I write this, I’m wearing yoga pants. Something that was mentioned in an article that older women shouldn’t wear! I’m so sick and tired of our youth-based fashion and cosmetics industries pontificating that older women can’t do this and that. It’s really disgusting. And I’m sure that many older women would look absolutely ravishing and happier if they didn’t listen to that garbage!! Again, Thank you for your comment and for reading AND enjoying the post!! XOXOXOXO!!!

Thank you for this hysterical look at our reality! I turned 61 yesterday. For my 60th, I had my knee length, thinning, graying brown hair cut off, bleached & turned blue, purple & turquoise. It looks fabulous & I finally have hair that looks like ME! I too, rock the skinny leg jean on a daily basis & can’t be bothered to wear a heel higher than 2″.
