That’s right because if I went back in time to old Virginny West Virginny I could use coal on my eyelashes and probably get the same effect on my lashes.
This could be the new mascara!
It’s time to lash out again. Another gripe about mascara.
I’m needing mascara to come through for me these days because I stopped wearing eyeliner on my lids for the time being. I’m only tight lining the inside lid and between the lashes-it kind of opens the eyes a bit. But it’s a worthless look if the lashes disappear or don’t look thick or longer.
See? My lashes aren’t what they used to be. Therefore, I depend on mascara to enhance the lashes I once had. (This photo was taken after having my makeup on over 12 hours today so it’s a bit messed up)
Forget wearing fake lashes to work because I’m at the computer all day and by the end of the day my eyes have had it. Glue irritates my sensitive eyes and although I am a fan of the Ardell Magnetic Accents lashes, I wear them on the weekends!
And I’ll tell you, it isn’t so much the actual product (in some cases) in the mascara tube but it’s about the wands.
Let me show you. OK?
I’m a fan of the mascaras by Essence cosmetics. They are dirt cheap—under five bucks and the product itself is fine. It’s the wand on the “Get Big Lashes” mascara that drives me nuts.
Although the mascara is great, the wand it way too cumbersome! It’s clumsy to use. Way too thick and bristly!
Now—I would say anywhere from two to four decades ago, this wand would have been fine—but when you lose lashes due to menopause and aging, huge bristles on a brush are not your best friend. Gone is the length that I once had and this huge monstrosity of a bristly wand is so cumbersome—especially when making an attempt to get mascara on those little lashes by where my tear duct is. And also, at the other end of my eye.
My solution is using an old wand from an “I-have-no-idea-what-mascara-this-wand-came-from” old tube of mascara that had a great wand. It’s most likely elf or another drug-store brand.
I can’t remember what mascara this wand came from but it is great! I also clean it on a regular basis. The plastic bristles are wonderful for separating the lashes too!
The Forbidden Volume mascara still comes in at number one for me because I like the thickness of the product and the brush isn’t all that bad.

The Lash Paradise that everyone raves about? I’m not a fan. The first tube of Lash Paradise that I had dried out within two weeks. It must’ve been a factory dud because the second tube (I purchased two at the same time) didn’t dry out. However, the freaking wand is awful. It’s another one of those overly fluffy cumbersome wands. And…the mascara itself is like tar. I’m telling you it is almost impossible to get this gunk off the lashes. I use Albolene which is lard for the face. It takes everything off. Everything except this mascara.
Check out the amount of mascara ON the tube. It’s disgusting. This isn’t a cosmetic. It is TAR! Tar for you lashes and it doesn’t come off. The wand..
Is an oversized mess. It doesn’t look that bad in this pic but it is just too big to work with shorter and sparse lashes!
I’m just not a fan of this.
Next up is elf 3-in-One mascara. I use it on my bottom lashes for the wand. Actually, the mascara is good for bottom lashes because not a lot of product comes out. What’s good for the bottom isn’t good for the top.
elf’s 3-in-One mascara. The wand, which reminds me of the wand in Benefit’s “They’re Real” (but should be renamed They’re Really Expensive) mascara. Not only is this wand great for lower lashes but it’s also good to get at those tiny lashes near your tear ducts!
Don’t even get me started on Maybelline’s “The Falsies”. It used to be my favorite mascara. The product was great before Maybelline decided to change the formula. They reformulated this—I know they did because I used it faithfully and now the mascars is just awful. The wand is actually floppy now. And I’m not the only one who thinks this way. It used to be Oona’s favorite mascara too. I know false—ok? False nails. False tan. False hair. I want the old formula of The Falsies back with a sturdier wand!
The Falsies is not what it used to be. OMG–I’m so hungry that I thought the Hydrofuge on the packet read “HydroFUDGE”!
The shape of the wand WAS user-friendly before Maybelline went cheap-o and recreated it in a floppy and flimsy way. I guess with all the money Maybelline had to pay Gigi Hadid, they had to cut back on everything else.
NYC, New York Color has a great mascara for bottom lashes. Sky Rise mascara. The wand is excellent is the mascara. It lengthens my lower lashes like nobody’s business and I love this for special occasions!

Physicians Formula has a fiber mascara that isn’t bad—it’s just that the wand is so damn small and gets so chock full of the fibers that it’s almost impossible to get the fibers on the lashes. The small wand really needs to be wiped down to get the full effect. But lately, I’m just too lazy to be bothered.
Look how tiny the wand is. It’s ridiculous actually. A small arm on the wand makes it difficult to apply the product!
This just in—reader Anne suggests Maybelline’s Lash Blast. I’m gonna try it because I’ll be it’s the old The Falsies formula!!! Wait. I think it’s CoverGirl Lash Blast!
I shall try this–and the wand looks good too!
Note, if you will, that I buy only drug-store mascara. I honestly do not think expensive mascaras are worth the money because mascara is one of those products that just doesn’t last too long if you wear it every day!! I’ve used pricey mascara in the past and the price-per-use just wasn’t worth it.
The other point I want to stress is that mascaras such as Lash Paradise that are more like tar aren’t good for our mature eyes. To get the product off you need to rub and that can pull on your lashes. We need a lighter formula, but one that’ll make the lashes look great and come off easy!
What are your thoughts? I’m curious.

I have tried so many different brands of mascara and I always return to Maybelline’s Great Lash mascara. The thing is now they have a few different wands but I still like the original. I do agree that the more expensive mascara brands are not worth the additional money per use.
Hi Toni. Yeah. Great Lash is the number one selling mascara of all time. And sadly doesn’t work for me at all. I like a lot of product on the wand and the mascara does nothing for my lashes. It’s so funny how mascara can work for one person and not another!!! XOXOXOXOXO!!!!
Like you I am constantly looking for the perfect mascara. I have tried almost everything, but have finally found one that actually works. Le Volume De Chanel in Noir. It is expensive here in Australia at $55.00 but it works. I have lashes and they look great. It does not clump and I only use one coat. It gives the same coverage as some of the fibre lashes and the brush is good. It does last for ages as well, at least 4 – 6 months and I use it every day. I still try some of the cheaper ones, but nothing seems to work.
Hi Lyn–isn’t it crazy that we are constantly searching. Wow! Why are so many products so pricey in Australia??? It’s amazing. I think that mascara retails for $32 here in the States. Not as pricey but it’s true its very hard to find that great mascara!!!! XOXOXOXOXO
Hi Catherine, Sadly there are lots of hidden taxes in Australia, our products are more than double the States and the European prices. The quality is questionable, we have different formulas, many of our name brand products are made in Asia. There are also lots of non genuine products in the market. The laws are very different too, very few ingredients are banned in Australia, so the market has many products which are no longer sold elsewhere. Needless to say I rarely buy products sold in Australia…….. Mascara, my thinning lashes love Lash Paradise, I apply with the thick brush, then I use a very skinny plastic mascara brush to evenly apply, it works well. I make huge messes trying to apply mascara with the thick brushes, for me, I always have a spoolie brush and a skinny mascara brush to even out the product. Dud mascaras sometimes turn into winners this way. Love your postings. XXX
It Cosmetics aptly named Tightline is a really good product that gets up right to the lash line. It has this really tiny wand with tiny bristles. I got a sample size from Sephora and I would definitely buy though I’m sure I’d have to sell my firstborn and his firstborn to pay for it. It is $$$ stuff but as a soft contacts lens wearer I cannot use those huge bristly wands or sometimes the products smell really noxious. I am the opposite of you. I wear eyeliner and no mascara but for special occasions I like the mascara. Go to your Sephora and see if they can give you a sample.
Thanks Momcat. I’ll definitely remember to ask for a sample next time I’m in Sephora. Cheap old Ulta doesn’t give shit away. But Sephora is very generous in their samples. iT cosmetics is one of those Love/Hates with me. I LOVE the lip products but their foundations and “face” based makeups are horrific on me. Completely drying my skin like the Sahara!! LOL!! Thanks for the tip!!!

I have used a lash primer called blinc with the mabelline mascara for a few years now and I think the 2 together work great!! How do you make a wig not shiny ? And any tips for dealing with an itchy wig when a bike helmet is worn? Merci Beacoup.
Hi Lauri. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I’ll have to look for this “blinc” stuff when I’m out and about. I spray cheapo Suave dry shampoo and let it dry. Then I shake it out. You know, none of my wigs itch me–It could be because I have a thick skull. Seriously–I do, I”ve had three head injuries and one doctor told me I was very lucky!! XOXOXOXO!!!!
You can purchase it online. I have not found the blinc in any stores other then a sole owned make-up store.
I think mascara is the most subjective makeup item there is. That’s probably why there are so many types available! I’m a mascara fiend and I’ve tried almost everything. I’ve also found that what most people love, such as L’Oréal Voluminous, Cover Girl Lash Blast and Too Faced Better Than Sex do not work for me. Right now I’m rotating Cover Girl Thick Lash, Benefit Roller Lash and Benefit Bad Gal Blast which are all working mostly well. I was sort of happy with Maybelline Total Temptation at first, but then it started to seem heavy and difficult to work with. Lash Paradise disappointed me after a few weeks for the same reasons. I used to like Maybelline Rocket and may try that again. I think I’m always going to be searching…lol
Lori..Right???? It’s a never ending search. Years ago, I had the BEST mascara by Borghese. The wand was metal and it was incredible. At the time, the brand was pricey–this is going back when I was in my twenties but that mascara was a miracle!!! XOXOXOXO!!!!
My Mom stills talks about an old Helena Rubenstein mascara (from the 60s) that she swears was the best. No bristles, just a metal wand.
Catherine, I am a bit divided on my love of the bright pink Lash Blast. It goes on easily with great length and volume. However, even though it is said to be waterproof, I notice that it is all gone after wearing half a day. Not great staying power. So, it is nice for an evening out or short activity during the day, but I don’t think an all day mascara. Color me sad. ☹️

I wear contact lenses, and a lot of mascaras irritate my eyes at some point during the day. Add to that my lashes are thinner and shorter than they used to be. Really not sure how to approach this and so most days I don’t!
Hi Vava! Ugh. I NEED mascara because my once-dark and thick lashes have become so sparse!! My issue of late is that some cheap liquid eyeliners such as rimmel and some no-name I picked up at Primark were irritating my eyes so I’m only tightlining these days. We gotta protect our eyes!!!! I probably need mascara too, but lately I’ve just forgone any sort of eye makeup. I have used an eyeliner pencil and blended it a bit with shadow, but most days I just don’t even bother. Waterproof mascara is the worst for my eyes – it flakes into my contacts and causes all sorts of havoc! I love the look of eye makeup, don’t get me wrong; I have some MAC shadows that I really like. I’ve been wondering about these eyelash serums out there that promote growth, have you tried any of those? If they work, I could certainly see trying those out because my natural lashes are not what they once where when I was in my 20s…..
I wore Covergirl Marathon mascara for years, stayed on your lashes until you took it off. Discontinued years ago, still trying to find a waterproof replacement. Suggestions ladies…..
