Hi All! I know. I know. Lately I’ve been so focused on this pandemic but personally, I think we need to come face-to-face with all aspects. Our lives have changed and will remain changed for quite some time.
Who knew that wearing masks would be the new normal? Who knew that we would be distancing ourselves socially? Who knew that our homes would literally and figuratively become our castles? Huh? How about that?
I tell ya, I’ve amassed an entire wardrobe of masks!
My son, Roman, brought these to me. One of his friends made them!

But one thing that has, I’m sure, affected us is shopping.
I’m not talking about shopping for the essentials. Or food that is readily available. We’ve all been very cautious to do our grocery shopping less and purchasing more at one time. We take careful steps. We comply with store regulations.
No. Nonononononononono! I’m talking about those once-pleasurable shopping trips. To the mall perhaps to pick up some makeup, or get a spray tan, or to add an item or three to your wardrobe.
Remember when shopping was actually FUN? Or a trip to the mall was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon or a way to beat the heat with that pumped up air conditioning?
Special occasion? Head to your local department or specialty boutique?
Someone had a baby? Head to the mall to get all giggly and excited about those adorable baby clothes!
Whatever the reason, our public shopping-for-fun has changed.
Our local King-of-Prussia semi-opened last week. I stopped by Nordstrom to see if I could purchase Guerlain’s Meteorites in a darker shade due to the summer darkening of my fair skin. Needless to say, the inventory was remarkably low and I left without the product I went in for (more about the Meteorites later on in this post).
This is what I wanted. This is not what Nordstrom had in their Guerlain inventory.
But I found two things astounding. First, Nordstrom had almost five months of closure. Why didn’t the store’s powers-that-be load up on inventory before re-opening. Better yet, why didn’t the store wait until they could stock up on inventory? Honestly, I felt almost violated.
The other astounding thing was I felt so uncomfortable being both at Nordstrom and at the mall. The thought of touching items that strangers touched grossed me out. The thought of entering a dressing room where someone who could have had COVID made me uneasy. I looked around at the people who were shopping and suddenly—I didn’t want to be there.
The thought of being in a dressing room in such confined quarters during this time is somewhat gross.
And so, I left but returned yesterday. I needed batteries for three watches that somehow lost their tick-tocks at the same time during this time and headed back to the mall.
Three watches–all ready to tell me what time it is now that the batteries have been replaced!
It was eerily empty. And there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when each individual store will open. Some are still closed. Some are opening soon. It’s just odd. And as soon as the batteries were put into place in the time pieces, we left the hall of shopping immediately!
Saturday morning. 11:30 AM. The mall is empty save for one lone wanderer!
Random openings abound. This is a great little shop with ceramic table ware imported from Poland. I’m glad to see that they have not gone under!
In the meantime, I’ve discovered that online shopping isn’t quite as bad as I thought it to be in the past!
It’s soothing, relaxing, stress-free, and feeds into my laziness!
There’s something soothing about heading to my computer (as shitty as my laptop is) or iPhone, perusing various sites and allowing my fingers to do the walking. In fact, during this pandemic I’ve gained 16 pounds but my fingers have slimmed down due to the amount of online shopping I’ve done!
And so, before I proceed, please allow me to give you a few pointers in connection with online shopping.
Know your favorite brand clothing’s fit. Example-for me, I am adept at J. Crew’s sizing. With J. Crew Factory, it’s another thing because the sizing can be inconsistent. With Lilly Pulitzer, it depends on the fabric and style of the dress, if a dress is all-cotton, then going up a size may be in order—especially if one has gained a few pounds over the past few months.
The Wynne maxi by Lilly Pulitzer. So nice–I have three in different prints. Luckily the Medium fits beautifuly due to the fabric and the stretch..
Here’s another Lilly Pulitzer dress I ordered online. Due to my pandemic 16-pound weight gain, she’s a bit on the tight side but she’ll fit better by the end of the summer. Seriously–know your size!
Check the return policy. Usually, there’s no issue with returns. However, in some instances there are. Recently Lilly Pulitzer had a summer sale on line. The items were final sale. In a case such as this, you really really need to be mindful of the fit of the clothing. I purchased a third Wynne maxi dress. I have two others—the first, I paid full-price because I wanted it for my daughter Oona’s bridal shower. The second, purchased during the Lilly Pulitzer After Party sale, in a different print. The dress was less than half the price of the original and the third as well. But do research to make sure the sale price is on point. You might be able to purchase elsewhere for the same sale price with a more user-friendly return policy for sale items! I will say that Amazon has a very good return policy!
Shop the sales. The online sales can be good. Better than in-store prices, but as stated above, do your research because you could find that treasured sale item for an even lesser price! Case in point–photo below–but also take into consideration the shipping and handling costs. Lilly Pulitzer offers free shipping. I don’t know about the company below!
Belk had the same Wynne maxi for $9.60 less than what I paid from the Pulitzer site. But, there may have been a shipping charge so do your homework!
For convenience sake. This pandemic took alot out of us. Both physically and emotionally. For convenience sake I find that shopping online has been stress-free. You don’t have to get dressed and get into the car and deal with bad drivers on the road. You’re not spending extra money on gas nor are you putting stress your car. No time is wasted waiting for a sales assistant and don’t have to deal with rude or ageist sales assistants. In addition, you don’t have to worry about some a-hole parking within millimeters of your car in a parking lot. No tracking down a cashier. No dealing with people who may have the virus.
As empty as the parking lot is, I make sure to park far away from others. And for some reason, when I return to my car, there always seems to be a car parked less than an inch away from mine!
Ain’t nuthin’ wrong with shopping on Amazon. This is the big one. Over the past few months, I’ve done quite a bit of shopping on the ‘Zon! From a ceramic egg-separator to masks-as-a-headband. From dresses that I absolutely adore to bathing suits. To makeup and tooth care for Bonaparte. Birthday gifts and even French lentils and yeast for baking. Amazon has it all.
Now, that’s not to say there have been shopping fails because there have been.
I still remain wary of purchasing “brand-name, luxury” cosmetics. Case in point—remember the Guerlain Meteorites I wrote about earlier in this post? Well, upon arriving home from Nordstrom, I decided to go online to peruse the net in search of these little cosmetic pearls. I found them on Amazon and for a price that was too good to be true.
It was too good to be true!
When I received the Meteorites there were a few red flags. Guerlain wraps the box that the meteorites come in with clear cellophane. There was no cellophane wrapping. This was a concern.
Buyer beware when purchasing luxury brand cosmetics from Amazon. There are a plethora of fakes and I don’t think there’s a close watch on them. Best leave the luxury makeup to in-store purchases or purchasing from the brand itself.
Secondly, the font of the printing on the Amazon-purchased Meteorites was different. It was smaller. I opened the box and the silver container looked pretty good. I compared it to the original Meteorites that I purchased in Paris. They both looked identical.
Then…I opened the container. Guerlain is very particular and the puff applicator that comes with the Meteorites is fluffy and white and soft and perfect for applying. The Amazon-purchased Meteorites came with a beigeish foam applicator. This was a dead giveaway that what I bought was a fake. The pearls didn’t have that pleasant scent either.
I returned them.
Also returned was a pair of “faux” Jack Rogers/Palm Beach Sandals by Pierre Dumas. I love the style of “Jacks” as well as Palm Beach. These sandals were so cheaply constructed and wide enough that two of my feet could have fit into one sandal. I returned them.
Second fail were these sandals. I should have taken the reviews to heart. They were returned!

Masks-as-Headbands. As masks, these sucked! Way too flimsy but as headbands, they are fantastic! I love the thick 60’s vibe. Here I’m pictured back from the beach!

Two items I wear every day are this Rosary-inspired chain with a delicate crucifix and a Star of David. They are both important to me as I despise antisemitic behavior.
This bracelet! I cannot begin to tell you how many times I’ve worn this since I ordered it. In fact, I ordered a second one. My sister had this and I was admiring it. She mentioned she purchased it on Amazon and I immediately made the purchase. This was just before the lockdown and I’ve worn this on the average of four times a week. IT was the best $12 ever spent!
Bonaparte’s birthday was last month and I ordered this poster of a movie starring his aunt, Daniele. We had it framed and it’s now hanging in his home office! Amazon is great for finding old movie posters!
Embryolisse is my favorite multi-tasking skin cream. I use it as a primer whether or not I’m wearing makeup. It’s a face cream, primer and makeup remover. And I ran out! My goal was to repurchase in France but as you know…..
We didn’t make it to France. I found it on Amazon. It damn near killed me to pay full-price but this is a holy grail item for me!
When you aren’t looking for luxury makeup, you can find some pretty decent options –I ordered these stick highlighters and blush and must say I’m extremely pleased! All glide on beautifully, are well-pigmented and stay in place!
A kitchen helper with a sense of humor! I ordered this egg-separator, Mr. Bogeyman. It’s gross but funny as all get out! And it works!!!!
And let’s not disregard Poshmark. As a lover of the Palm Beach Sandals I purchased a great unused pair of gray/gunmetal sandals for $30! I was thrilled! Seriously, Poshmark can be a goldmine for unworn items—it just takes a few moments of entering keywords of what you are looking for.
Never used! Brand new in the box! I love these so much!!! Poshmark find for sure!

Honestly, none of us have the answers as to what the future of shopping brings. What will Holiday shopping be like? With a number of stores filing for bankruptcy and closing, what’ll happen to retail?
For now, I prefer the online shopping. It’s just more convenient as long as the return policy is a fair one.
And quite honestly, I’m surprised at how much I’m loving online shopping!

I have made one trip to the mall to return some items. This was the beginning of June, I think. I also went into Nordstrom and was shocked at how empty it was. The only thing I could think was they were doing order fulfillment from stores? Many of the stores at the Fashion Mall at Keystone we’re closed and completely empty. Like you, I just wasn’t comfortable so we left as soon as possible. I don’t know what the future will bring, but it’s got to be better than this, right? Oh, wait, I said something similar about the President preceding President Obama…boy, do I miss W now! Online shopping is such a hit or miss for me. I’ve started stalking Johnny Was clothing. They had a huge sale so I pounced. A large was 1/3 the price of a medium. How much bigger could a large be? Much, much bigger…and final sale. I sew so I (sorta a palindrome) will figure something out. For the time being, I’m just going to stick with what I have. It’s not like I’m actually going anywhere!
Hi Marsha57- I live about 2.5 hrs. from Keystone and pre virus made reg. trips to shop there and also hit up T. Joes. Sad to hear it has so many closed stores…I hope many reopen at some point but I wonder how many will be able to make it.

At least the large wasnt smaller (yes I have seen that in a shop in the UK – noticeably smaller), its a good thing you can sew (me too but sometimes I think I shouldn’t “have” too). As for nowhere to dress up and go – have yourself a solo-soireee, a party for you or similar, why shouldnt we 🙂
Catherine, could you help me with a wig company? I have a petite head and would like to know what companies could accommodate my size. I am on a chemo and losing my hair for the third time and need a wig and one that is cool in the summer heat. You always look so pretty and natural in yours and figured I should ask you. I hear you Catherine on not feeling comfortable shopping and that is def. not me…or at least who I was before the virus. I found shopping to be therapeutic in so many ways….I love clothes/fashion/makeup etc so to stroll around and see what was in the stores lifted me up if I was feeling down or made me even happier if I was having a good day. The only places I have gone is the grocery store/Costco ( just a few times and in and out very quickly) and Target…and on that one trip to Target…I felt so uncomfortable…kept asking myself why I was there …was it essential? It was not ….so left quickly after about 10 min. I have ordered more from Amazon…mainly toys for grandchildren and household items. You are so darling and so pretty much everything you buy looks great…not true for me and I get tired of the buying/returning cycle.
Quick question for you and your readers…any suggestions for eye cream to help replace volume lost in lower eye orbits…concealer just isn’t enough…maybe eye cream isn’t either? I don’t expect miracles and do not want to waste money but if it could help a bit would love to know what to try.

Hi Nancy! Oh I used to walk the mall for excercise or just to get out of the house! Let me tell you those days are over. As far as eyecream goes, I don’t use a cream specifically for that area (though my lower-eye orbits are looking a bit scraggly these days) but…..I did test a brand that is sold on Amazon and I LOVE it. It’s a greman brand MediPharmma and their skincreams are EPIC!!!! XOXOXOXO
You have put on weight in lockdown – seriously where???? You are looking so darn fantastic, and here I am feeling like a giant slug as I have put on 10 pounds – I believe that is because gravel guy is here ALL THE TIME not down in London for most of it (seriously I am desperate and then beyond for someone/anyone to take him for a few days, honestly I will mail him ANYWHERE). If anyone wants a middle aged grump – let me know.
The mall thing, I am waiting to KNOW if it is safe, or to at least have the information to make an informed choice – I may be tough as old boots but you never know until you know – in essence if it was just lil old me I would weigh up the risks quite differently to weighing up the risks with others in my house even if they seem tough peoples – I say this as I lost my beloved 17 and 1/2 yr old son a few years ago from a massive heart attack in his sleep and who even knew loosing a big gorgeous boy was even possible – so I dont take risks because I know what loss is like, I dont think other people necessarily think like that so I factor that in – even when it comes to gravel-guy I dont take risks just in case… You think you are just doing your doing, and then it is too late. Maybe I am over cautious, but I couldnt live with myself if I inadvertantly wiped out loved ones or friends or neighbours.
Anyway I LOVE online shopping – but then I am in the UK so may have a totally different take on this … for instance you can deal direct with some amazing companies, the little guys, the humans – yup – them! For instance in the UK and for those missing tasty french morsels – Frenchclick, and of course Fragonard or Sanareva if you are into French skincare (or just want the laptop equivalent of drooling over all those products). If you know what you want in terms of skin brands – many of them are online and offer points or incentives for loyalty. I’m very partial to a bit of etsy – I can buy things made in France (woot) but be careful of the Chinese mega companies trying to flood this site but I have bought some absolute gems re handmade ceramics etc. Seriously online is lovely and if my DPD driver brings them I am even happier (his name is Slav by the way – I utterly love him but have made my feelings know on that way before now).

Oh dear God, Juliet, I never knew you lost a son–my deepest, deepest condolences. I can definitely understand your cautiousness. It’s a crapshoot for anything these days. Americans are banned from the EU and I’m taking it personally because I’m doing my best to stay safe–and I hate that thing in the White House because I blame him for his pitiful and criminal behavior during this time. I sincerely hope that filth is voted out of office. OTOH, I made the first step to get my Irish Naturalization so I can get a passport. My aunt sent me my grandmother’s birth certificate. Next year I’m eligible for French citizenship. And I cannot wait! Yeah. You are so lucky because you do have far better online shopping selections than we do here–that’s for damn sure! I am trying to not do anything that is not essential, and I do not do well with online shopping anyway because of sizing issues. Plus, I am trying to not spend $$ as the world seems so…uncertain. You are lucky that you know your sizes and exactly what you want.
Hi Maryellen! That’s about the only good thing right now is knowing what I want. Everything else is just one big WTF!! We refuse to go to restaurants. There’s really nothing to do outside of work except to hit the beach early when nobody is around and leave early when the masses without masks arrive! XOXOXOXO
Catherine, great post, as always! i hate shopping and always have. Oddly enough I find myself compulsively watching clothing subscription un-boxings on YouTube (I managed to find a handful of women over 50 who do them) —looking for inspiration and guidance, I guess. It actually has been a little helpful…I used to avoid online shopping because I simply dreaded the idea of having to possibly return things but honestly, so many companies and sites have made it so easy that I really can’t use that as an excuse anymore My sad excuse of a mall was already failing before the virus —it’s hard to imagine it returning successfully. What is so difficult about the present situation is all the unknowns…..in my lifetime, and I am 63, there is nothing I can compare it to for reference. It’s that uncertainty that I find more discomforting than the actual fear of the virus!
Watching those youtube videos is a great idea….can you share links for your favorites? How did you find them? Thank you.

As to how I found them, I believe at one time I searched YouTube for unboxings specifically for “women 50 and older”. I think one of the first that I discovered was Georgia Sunshine….they support and recommend each other so one leads to another, to another, etc…. Deb you hit the nail on the head with uncertainty. That’s a thorn in my side as well. There are so many “whats” and “what ifs” and “Why’s” right now. Its such an uncomfortable place to be. I’ve been watching Wayne Goss and Aly Art on YouTube. And ASMR videos to relieve my stress!! XOXOXOXO
When you have talked about your strong attachment to your kids and how having them at home when they were younger were some of the best times of your life, I feel exactly the same way. So, the mother in me wants to be able to protect and guide even my adult children and to find myself in such uncharted waters, with no concrete past experience to refer to that can offer reassurance about how “this too shall pass” (because it did before) well, it’s the main source of my anxiety, with no solution in sight! Thanks for the Youtube recommendations, I will check them out because there IS comfort in knowing that we are all in this together!

Those carefree days seem to be over for foreseeable future 🙁 I’m not much of an online shopper but due to the lockdown, I did buy art supplies and books on line from local stores. Now, I’m only shopping local and very little at that. I don’t need much now that we’re not really going anywhere or celebrating anything…YOU though, look gorgeous in your new dresses and jewelry and sandals…great work on the online shopping.

Thought provoking post Catherine, Amazon for the win, absolutely and your cautions about shopping are right on. Poshmark has yielded incredible gems including a Lilly Pulitzer summer weight scarf. I haven’t ordered much lately due to Covid, the scarf I didn’t open for a week!
We have been ordering groceries on line for pick up. Costco and the liquor store are the only places we go in person. Masks worn indoors, on public transit and in cabs are mandated pretty much everywhere here in Ontario. A lot of people wear them when outside in crowded areas so they are part of the wardrobe now. Nobody is travelling much unless it’s within the province but we live on the Québec border so we can go over there as many own cottages in Québec. We have a lot fewer patients in the hospital with Covid so that’s a positive. I am so sorry it’s still such a bad scene south of the border. We have family in NJ and California and they are all ok but still quite nervous.

Hey Momcat. I think our Canadian friends are in far better shape then here in the States. People here are absolute morons and I’m not kidding. I only frequent places where a mask is mandatory because I refuse to be in confined quarters with a bunch of idiots who refuse to wear a mask. They are now all proclaiming “Pro-choice” what a bunch of hypocrites. I, for one, don’t want to get COVID and have been extremely cautious. I have purchased some fantastic deals on summer clothes and two wigs, however now I have a closet full of clothes and great wigs and nowhere to wear them…,and a husband that is watching me like a hawk!!! I am a stealth online shopper and when I have insomnia, I am a danger to myself and our household budget. LOL – love your blog!

I’ve never enjoyed shopping, so doing what I need to do via the Internet has worked well for me. These days, my purchases have been for some sewing patterns, a marvelous piece of indigo cloth from Brittex in San Francisco, and a few household items from Amazon. One thing I haven’t bought is any new footgear since the pandemic hit – and this is a first for me!!!!!!!!!!! I’m shopping my closet these days. I’ve been busy sewing garments, and also a bunch of face masks for friends and family because my gut feeling is we are going to be wearing them all next year. So it’ll will be good to have a collection of masks so you can take a fresh one each time you need it. Husband does all the grocery shopping here for us and he goes out once every two weeks. He works in the medical field and understands how important it is to 1) wear a damn mask, 2) limit trips to the store.
Can I do a rant? Your blog is about the only one I can handle reading these days. I’ve become really disgusted with various influencers and bloggers who just don’t GET IT. They are flying around the country, not wearing any masks, and acting as if there isn’t a public health crisis going on. What part of STAY HOME do these people not get. Sure, I don’t fault you and the Frenchman from going to the beach at all – you are wearing masks and distancing yourselves from people outside your household. You’re not in Florida where things are completely out of control…. But these other idiots are not abiding by rules (and in some cases local mandates) and I’ve been calling them out. Influencers need to step up to the plate and follow national health guidelines. Just like that asshole in the White House, he’s disgusting and now he’s attacking Dr. Fauci. OK end of my rant, I’ll go back under the chair. Take good care and keep up your great work.
Hi Vava! It’s great that you are able to whip up masks for your loved ones! I’ve quite the collection and keep extras in my glove compartment in the car and in my purse. I’m sick and tired of seeing people in my area, in my development and all around who refuse to wear a mask. It’s arrogant, selfish and obnoxious. Don’t even get me started on the deeply shallow vapidness of influencers AND the companies that pay them. They are just as guilty. Now is NOT the time to start showcasing photoshopped bodies in exotic locations. It’s time to send a serious message and it is trying my patience! I do believe we will be masked for a long long time! I’m right with you. We’re staying in. I even order all of our food online. Subscribed to Butcher Box for meat, fish and chicken. I’ve had some workmen here. But we stay far apart and wear masks. I’ve been ordering makeup stuff. Not from Amazon. Like you I don’t trust the sellers. I got directly to the maker or Sephora, Ulta or Beautylish. I wish I could test the makeup but I think those days are gone for a long time. But ordering has been just fine.Do I need more clothes? No, I’m wearing the same stuff over and over again. Why spend the money now. I’m spending plenty on makeup. But tu then again, we’re not going out to eat or spending on anything much beyond food. Bottom line we’re being very careful. I’m voting with you.
Catherine, I have been purchasing most everything on-line for the past 5 years, as my fibromyalgia has gotten too bad to walk the mall. I use to shop til I dropped; now I have dropped and cannot shop! Lol! I have recently been purchasing things on Amazon I never did before: greeting cards, scarves, sweaters, etc. Scarves are really a bargain on Amazon, as they can be so pricey in the stores and catalogs. Packages are hitting our front porch almost everyday! I miss the fun of being in the stores, but I so appreciate the ease of buying things on-line. For clothes, I usually stick to a few stores where I like the styles and fit. I have not bought shoes in a store for ages, and I have a lot of shoes! And to be honest, too many clothes! Just click and buy! Be careful with on-line shopping!
