Smashin’ Fashion…and Hiding a Muffin Top!

What a day! Snow is on the way and I lost my original draft of my post!  Arrgh!  Earlier today I was out and about with Chippy, my protector! My Protector He  thinks he’s my bodyguard–and he’s so serious! Anyway, when I was at the bank, I received one of those odd compliments.  The teller who handled my transaction told me I was dressed very nicely for a “woman my age”. While I realize she meant well, and I thanked her profusely, it made me annoyed that a stereotypical vision of an “Older Lady”  wearing a bad haircut, a pastel windbreaker, loose polyester pants and frumpy shoes is still visualized in the minds of so many people.  On the other end of the spectrum we have high fashion magazines with photographs of clothing in both advertising and editorials being worn by twenty-something models. Also in those magazines are clothing that is way out of my affordable reach!!  That being said, I decided to put some outfits together of what I like to think is how an atypical older woman dresses!

My taste in clothing is pretty safe. My color scheme is black, navy, red, and plaid.  I save the bright colors for summer.   In addition, I never purchase at full-price. I use store coupons and online coupons and really keep an eye out for sales.  If I do fall in love with one particular article of clothing, I purchase it in many colors–for example, the J. Crew Tippi sweater, I have it in every color available and wear these pullover sweaters constantly.  They are light enough to wear under a blazer–trust me–I cannot stand feeling bulky at all!!! I love wearing blazers but have to be able to move around!

Skinny jeans are another staple.  My favorite are the Gap 1969 Legging Jeans. The fit is great and these jeans are not low-waisted. There is a stretch factor, but I wear them with a belt. I cannot say enough about these jeans.  I also like the jeans from Loft. The Loft jeans have a nice cut and fit very well for we curvy women!  So here goes with the clothes..I’m smashin’ fashion today!

This is my go-to uniform of sorts. Skinny jeans, boots (these are dupes of Stuart Weitzman 50/50’s by Unisa. I just cannot justify the $600+ price of the 50/50’s), Tippi sweater, J. Crew Schoolboy blazer in Navy ( I love the J. Crew Navy Schoolboy so much I have two–one for a backup) and a big scarf. OOTD Red Tippi Navy Blazer Gap Jeans 50DupesWhen I’m running errands and am jumping in and out of the car, I hate wearing a heavy coat–the blazer and scarf keep me warm and fashionable!

Now for some “office” attire (I’m unemployed now but I wore these outfits to the office  and will wear them when I become re-employed). Red Tippi Black plaid j crew skirt dulci pumps This pic, I’m wearing a red J. Crew Tippi with a black and white plaid skirt that is also from J. Crew.  On my feet are the only item I’ve ever paid full-price for–the J. Crew suede Dulci kitten heeled pumps in black. Red Tippi Black Gap Stretch Pencil Skirt Vince Camuto Red PumpsI’m still wearing that red Tippi, but this time I paired it with a black pencil skirt from Gap. This skirt has a nice bit of stretch which makes the fit perfect! Next  is the outfit I planned on wearing for Christmas but I was so sick that I never got to wear it. I was so sad!  Black Tippi sweater with the J. Crew Flounce skirt in red.  Do you like the “blogger pose” pic of me? I couldn’t help myself!  Black Tippi Red Flounced Skirt Ivanka Trump black pumpsBlack Tippi Red Flounced Skirt dopey Blogger pose

Still in the black Tippi, I have on a gray, ruched, knit skirt from Banana Republic–it is the most comfortable skirt I own–it’s worn with black tights and black Vince Camuto booties!Black Tippi Banana Skirt J Crew Pearls Vince Camuto booties My love for Black Watch Plaid is next–yet another excuse to wear that black Tippi! Worn with a J. Crew Factory Black Watch Plaid pencil skirt, a black J. Crew Schoolboy Blazer, black tights and pumps, the look is polished and professional.  I also have the J. Crew Factory Skimmer Pants in the Black Watch Plaid. The cut is generous in the thigh area, but still has a flattering fit!

Black watch plaid skirt with black blazerBlack watch plaid skirt close upBlack Watch Plaid pantsMoving on to a Navy Tippi that I wear with an Old Navy knit pencil skirt. This skirt was $5.00 on clearance and I’ve consistently worn it for three years now! It’s been washed tons of times and still retains a great shape!Red and blue stripped Old Navy Skirt with Navy TippiI have Vince Camuto pumps on my feet. Onto more casual attire!Navy Mini Pants Navy Tippi J Crew Scarf Vvia spiga flat Ivank Trump metallic pumpSame navy Tippi with  a J. Crew factory scarf and navy J. Crew Minnie pants.  I have two different shoes on, Via Spiga flats, and Metallic pumps from Ivanka Trump–I wanted a more casual vibe with the flat and a dressier one with the heel!

Muffin top in jeans I have a gut and muffin top!  I don’t workout. Don’t judge. However, I am a master at hiding it. See? Navy J Crew Tunic Anchor Scarf Gap Jeans Tory Burch Boot Hinge BootGap Legging jeans, J. Crew wool tunic sweater and J. Crew anchor scarf. The look is completed with boots. The darker boots are by Hinge and I love them. The lighter boots are Tory Burch. I love the color but I can’t stand the boots.  These TB boots took me a year to break them in and the “foot” of the boot looks too big.  I bought them for half-price, a disappointing purchase!

Buffalo Checked ON Shirt Jeans Nun BootsHipster Hat Nobody should see My “Oh-my-god-my-delusional-mother-thinks-she’s-a-hipster” look! I would wear this to embarrass my kids! Actually, this is my snowy-day look! I love these boots because the laces and detail remind me of old-school nun shoes!  This hat is wicked warm. My daughter left it behind (on purpose),  but I love it!

My favorite T-shirt! This is as political as I get folks! I purchased a men’s T-shirt at Uniqlo for $5.00 and had it embroidered. Freedom of speech is very important and I wear this shirt proudly! My favorite T Shirt We older women have the freedom to wear what we want and shouldn’t be pidgeon-holed into  “old lady”  stereotypes! Let’s stand united fashionable women!!!

Before I go–do you ever put a CD in your car and listen to one of your favorite songs over and over and over?  Please don’t let me think I’m the only one who does this!! I did it today with my favorite Beatle’s song of all time!!!!   “And Your Bird Can Sing“-Best. Beatle. Song. Ever.  Have a listen!:

Going to start preparing dinner now. Vincent has been asking me for Sausage and Peppers and Egg.  It’s a good meal for a snowy evening–comfort food!

Till tomorrow, XOXOXOXOXO!

Turkey Necks and Parking Lot Signs!

Happy Tuesday!  It’s a mild day today and very damp. My hair is exceptionally big today—and it’s the second day after my roller set. I’m feeling very “Deneuve/Barbarella/Adele” . Very mid 1960’s!Me Big hair black and white

Do I know how to work that ’60’s vibe or what??????

I’m also feeling very lazy! I should be working on perfecting my resume and continuing my job search, but I’m just so tired of completing all those online applications. Those online applications are a pain in my neck. Speaking of which, I got a quick glance of my own neck today. Ouch!

Wow. Super Turkey Neck

I opened my scarf so you could see my neck. I’m doing this for you because I love you!

I have a serious case of “Turkey Neck”. It’s so gross!  You know………bangs are the budget-minded woman’s Botox, and those new “lip plumping” glosses are great for making your mouth look a bit younger and plump.   Sunglasses can hide not only lines and crow’s feet, but can also disguise a case of tired eyes or “hangover” eyes. Lots of hand cream and gloves can hide aging hands—but that neck… Owwweeeee!!! If I stretch my neck out and stand or sit at attention, perfectly straight till my upper body is straining, my neck looks a tad more youthful. That’s too much work. Besides, this neck is a part of who I am now. So I dress my neck up! During the winter months I love my turtlenecks. But I especially love my scarves!

Plaid ScarvesTurkey neck covered.

These days, I’m on a big comfy plaid scarf kick. Plaid is one of my favorite colors. Seriously. Any plaid will do. I suppose wearing uniforms to school for so many years has something to do with my plaid fetish. These blanket scarves are just so toasty and flattering!

I also have my collection of colorful and lighter scarves for the warmer weather.   Hey. Don’t judge—besides hiding the old wrinkly neck, the lighter scarves are great for soaking up menopausal sweat that can turn a great hair day into a horror! They are also extremely chic and can warm you up a bit if the a/c is making the summer air too frigid! This is how we age lookin’ mighty fine!!

Darker ScarvesSummer ScarvesMy colorful scarves!!!

In my delusional world, I am able to check myself into the best hospital in the world and hire the best plastic surgeon in the world to perform a “neck lift” on me.   Why stop there? I would also have an eye-lift, a tummy tuck, I would have fat sucked from my cottage-cheese, jiggly thighs and it transferred to my boobs because the fat would be natural filler. No silicone for me! Wait! I’m not done yet—I’m on a delusional roll. Since I’m a natural kinda gal, I would have a face lift. ….maybe a touch of rhinoplasty to get rid of that little bump on my nose. And –what the heck—I want a movie star smile so I’ll have veneers on my teeth please!

In my real world the scarves and turtlenecks work just fine so I am a happy camper!

The world of supermarket parking lots is a different story. Have you ever noticed the new “entitlement” spaces?   I’m not talking “Handicapped” parking spots. This “Customer with Child Parking” sign is what I’m talking about! Customer with Child Parking

Are you kidding me??? Why not make these children walk a bit farther into the very store that sells processed and junk food that many of their parents will purchase! I remember the days when I lived in Manhattan and carried a stroller up on down the stairs to the subway, with a child hanging on each arm! Walking across Central Park from the Upper West Side to the East side was a form of pleasurable exercise and kept both my children and me in top physical form! Listen—I’m not meaning to sound self-righteous here, but I just don’t get it. Other than handicapped spaces, there’s no reason for other kinds of specialized spaces. Why aren’t special parking spots set aside for people over 65 years old—where’s the love for the senior citizens? Why not have special parking spaces for menopausal women, or younger women who have cramps due to their periods? How about special spaces reserved for customer with pets? Crazy—right??? * Steps off soapbox gingerly so as not to ruin the overpriced Tory Burch boots she wears even though she got them at Nordstrom’s 1/2 price boot sale two years ago*

Ohhhh….I was listening to this in the car today!! Here’s some Supertramp to make you feel a bit uplifted.  This is one of my favorite songs of all time. I love the melody and the words–and the song is just magical, gives me goose bumps every time I hear it!

Enjoy your day!

XOXOXOXOXOX!!!

My Hair Lady–The Bald and the Beautiful!

Hi Everybody! This is a very  difficult subject for me to post about. Today’s post is about an issue that affects not only  older women, but I really think it can have an effect on women of all age groups. The topic is “Female Hair Loss”. I want to share my personal story and how I’m handling it.

When I was a young girl, my mother took me to the “beauty parlor” to get my hair “thinned out” on a regular basis because my hair was incredibly thick and unmanageable. I was the girl whose hair broke combs—it was that thick. My mother couldn’t even get a normal sized barrette into my hair. She would tell me that she could turn me upside down and mop the floor with my hair.  I put the “big” in hair!

Shortly after the birth of my oldest son, one of my girlfriends brought to my attention a little bald spot on the back of my head. I didn’t really think much of that little nickle-sized  spot at the time because there were other fish to fry—like being a new mom and enjoying my time with my baby. However, that spot did cross my mind from time to time, and every now and then I would check to see if that became larger. My hair grew to a longer length..and with the birth of two more kids, I let my hair go back to it’s natural state. i.e. curly. My curls were wild—and my full head of hair would disguise any hair loss that was thrown my way. I did notice that with the birth of each child, I lost more hair, but that was to be expected. Am I right?? Me and Roman Inwood hill park 1988

Years passed but I still had a decent head of hair. Menopause hit and suddenly I realized it wasn’t taking me 2 hours to blow dry my hair. Then I remembered that little “bald spot”. I grabbed a mirror and took a look at the back of my head. “Holy S*it”!! Not only did that little spot grow—but why didn’t anyone let me know about it????? I started searching the internet (ummmm…about 10 years ago not much information could be found) on women’s hair loss.

I made an appointment with a dermatologist. Her advice was to not worry about it, it happens during menopause. She told me that her hair was thinning as well. Seriously–this is what I paid to hear??? Next I went to my gynecologist and had bloodwork done. My hormone levels were definitely screwy—I knew that —but what about the hair?????????? He gave me one of those looks that basically said “look, you’re not sick so deal with it—ok?” I then became convinced that there was some sort of issue with my thyroid. Three different doctors and three different blood tests later—my thyroid levels were normal. Frustration AND obsession set it. My only solutions were to A. wear my hair up and B. Keep it in a short bob so I could do a decent comb back and hide whatever loss I had.

It was on a flight that I found a solution to my hair loss problem. I saw an ad for “Toppik” in one of those “in flight” magazines. The ad looked promising so I ripped the page out and put it in my purse. I found Toppik at Sally Beauty Supply. As soon as I arrived home, I ran into the bathroom, read the directions, and sprinkled these little fibers on my “spot”.   I immediately knelt down and thanked God and the Saints for this miracle. My spot was completely covered and my confidence was renewed. Yup! Confidence.   The Toppik did a great job for about three years….until the spot actually turned into head baldness. My bald scalp back view for Mondays blogMy loss was no longer a “spot”. See that picture?  That’s the back of my head–in all it’s bald glory and I actually put it out there for all to see!  I purchased many products that promised to grow hair. You know what? NONE of them worked. None!!! Once that hair follicle is gone. It’s gone. Now I’m no pro—and I can only give you my personal experiences, I realize that many people have luck with Rogaine and Monoxodil, but I didn’t. I went back to the internet. I found two more products. “Miracle Hair“, another hair building fiber product, and “DermMatch“, a product in “cake” form that is applied with a dampened sponge tipped applicator. I purchased both and had great results.Derm Match Label for Blog on Monday

After I wash my hair, I apply the derm match to my bald scalp, as you can see from the pictures of before the Derm Match application and after the DermMatch application.

Another view of my baldness for Monday

After more Derm MatchRoller set back view

Hair rolled up and waiting to dry. OK. So after the hair is dried, I check to see if I missed any spots on my scalp and fill them in with a  an additional bit of Derm Match. Next step is to take the “Hair Miracle” fibers and sprinkle them over the back of my scalp after my hair has been combed.  *NOTE–my apologies for a bad pic but I couldn’t hold the camera to the back of my head while sprinkling. This was the best I could do*  Back view after “Hair Miracle” sprinkled is much better!

Sprinkling the Hair Miracle on the back of my headBack view dried with Derm Match plus a bit of the front view before ToppikI like the Hair Miracle fibers on the back of my head because the fibers are thicker —which is good for filling in a larger spot. Next, I get my thrusty Toppik and sprinkle the Toppik fibers on the top of my scalp where the hair is thinning. Sprinkling Toppic on the Front of my head

Fill In Powder to cover the gray

“Fill-In” Application

I also use a little compact product called “Fill-In”. This comes with an orange brush and is great for covering any gray roots in between coloring your hair.   Last step. I spray my hair with a bit of hair spray—any brand will do. I know this seems like an awful lot of work—but trust me, it really isn’t.  Listen to me—my hair is super dry and coarse and porous, so I only wash it once a week. My hair “cocktail” of these products lasts all week!!!! After a couple of days, I may have to touch up a bit, but it’s just a sprinkle. Even Adam, the guy who does my hair, is impressed with my products! I can leave my house on a rainy day—or a windy day and not worry about my hair loss being on display. I cannot tell you how it works while swimming though because I’m one of those women who swim with my head above water—I don’t get the hair wet—never have and never will!  The pic below is me after using the products. Not too shabby-I mean, it isn’t perfect, but it works!  Do you like the roller set?

Not too shabby for a non professional

I’m no pro–but I believe for an average, middle-aged woman, my hair products work well to disguise my loss!..Right????

My girlfriend, Angela Ambrose, is a cosmetologist and hair stylist who’s been in the business for 40 years.Angela Isn’t she gorgeous? Look at her hair—any Atypical60  reader should be jealz—I know I am!  Anyway, Angela has given us some tips on how to get a healthier, more luxe head of hair. 1. Eat carrots and nuts–especially walnuts, these are essentials for healthier hair–also eat eggs for protein! 2. Use Coconut oil as a conditioner. Leave it on for a while, then rinse. 3. Use sage oil for hair growth.  Angela is also a proponent of Biotin and B complex.  I’ll tell ya, I’m going to start taking Angela’s  “sage” advice (Yes. Another pun intended) for my hair!  She’s the best “tressed” grandmother I’ve ever seen in my life!!

Oh, before I forget– I want to tell you where I purchase the  products for hair loss coverage and the prices:

  • ToppikToppik Hair Building Fibers at Sally Beauty for $23.00.  A container of this lasts me about three months, as I don’t use it every day.
  • DermMatch DermMatch cake viewfrom Amazon. At $47.00 it may seem pricey, but one cake of this lasts 6 months. I’m serious. I teeny bit goes a long, long way. Worth the price in confidence alone!
  • Miracle HairMiracle Hair Hair Fibers  Also purchased from Amazon. $24.95. This also lasts a good three months…..lastly,
  • Fill-In brand, Fill In PowderPowder. I picked this up over a year ago at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $9.99–less 20% with their infamous coupon! It covers gray “beauty-“fill”ly.

Well, my dear friends that if you suffer any sort of hair loss, that I was able to help in some small way.  You ain’t alone.  This is a subject that hits home for many, but isn’t often brought up.  Atypical60 wants to address issues like this.

Smile and have a happy rest of the day! XOXOXO!

Proust Would Be Proud!

It is  a dreary, wet and totally iced-over Sunday. Today is one of those “Yeah-I’m-taking-a-shower-then-putting-my-pj’s-back-on” kinda day. I got the roller-set working (btw, this roller set will be a part of tomorrow’s posting on female hair loss), and the face cream slathered all over my face.  My little Chippy doesn’t even know quite what to make of the Chippy king of the houseway I look–Yikes!Roller set and my face wiwth cream on it.Roller set back view

Anyway, a bad-weather day is all you need to take a step back and snuggle up on a sofa, a comfy throw blanket to warm you up, with a good book or a magazine. It’s a hot tea or cocoa sorta day. Later on, I plan to sit in my favorite part of the house–the sunroom off the kitchen.  It’ll be nice to cozy up and read “My Father’s Glory and My Mother’s Castle” by Marcel Pagnol.  Pagnol wrote about growing up in France at the turn of the century, among other subjects and his books are just mesmerizing.  A total escape into a slower and more genteel way of life.

Sunday Blog. My favorite Reading SpotMy favorite spot!My Fathers Glory My Mothers Castel Marcel PagnolSweet reading!

Today is also a great day for baking.  You know, when my kids were really young—before they started school, I would bake everything from scratch. I didn’t want them eating pre-packaged cookies or brownies or even cupcakes–I even went as far as to make my own tortillas! Yeah..that  idealistic way of thinking didn’t last too long!

When they started going to school, even though they still loved home baked Chocolate Chip cookies, Duncan Hines became my go-to baker! I mean, come on now—with the hectic schedules the three kids had, it was much easier to open up a box of cake mix and whip up a few dozen cupcakes for classroom events rather then to bake from scratch. Although I must add, the Barefoot Contessa “Outrageous Brownie” recipe was a huge hit at the post-prom parties so there were a few instances where I did go back to baking from an actual recipe!

These days with everyone out of the house, I have made a return to baking from scratch. I promised Vincent that I would make a batch of his beloved Madeleines!  A do-nothing day like today is a perfect day for baking these fluffy, lemony, delicate little tea cakes that Proust made famous in his prose.  It’s a timely process because after you make the batter, the batter needs to rest.  There are many schools of thought on the proper way to make Madeleines, and after much trial and error, I use Dorie Greenspan’s recipe.  Here’s the link:

Dorie Greenspan Madeleine Recipe

Ingredients for MadeleinesSilky Madeleine BatterMy ingredients at the ready and a silky batter ready to rest in the fridge produce beautiful and flavorful Madeleine cakes…Freshly Baked Madeleines! I’m telling you, Proust would be proud!

Feeling ever-so-productive, I had egg yolks left over from a soufflé that I made last week, so I made lemon curd. Now, I dunno about you, but I’m not much of a “jelly and jam” person, after years and years of PPJ sandwich making, my tastes have turned more to lemon and fruit curds–they are more custardy and buttery than jams and jellies and curd is great spread on a scone, or toast, or in my case, rice cakes. (I’m constantly counting WW points, but my count is way too high!)  Basically, the lemon curd recipe is as follows, take 4 or 5 egg yolks, 3/4 of a cup of sugar, the zest of one lemon, 1/2 cup of lemon juice, a splash of vanilla, a pinch of salt,  and place all these ingredients in a heavy pot on the stove. Then get a stick of butter out of the fridge, slice it into about 8 pieces, and put it back in the fridge.  Then put a medium low light under the pot that you have the ingredients in. Stir with a wooden spoon until the mixed ingredients become thicker and coat the spoon–around 7 to 8 minutes. Turn the flame off.  Take the butter out of the fridge.  Stir the butter into the mixture, one piece at a time.  Pour into jars.  Let cool then place in the fridge. Easy peasy!

Lemon Curd on the stoveLemon Curd jarred and ready! Ummmmm. Lemony goodness!  Hey when life gives you lemons–make lemon curd, but make sure you have egg yolks. No “yolking” around! (yes. my silly pun is intented)!

Enjoy your day and remember each day brings a wiser and better us!

XOXOXO! Cathe!

Out and About and “Lashing” Out!

Saturday morning! I remember back in the day when these mornings were spent rushing around to baseball, basketball, and soccer games and practices with the boys! I also remember the weekends spent driving Oona to Irish dance classes and competitions. There may not have been much time on the weekends for relaxation and idle time, but it was fun and I relished in it! Spending time with the kids when they were young gave me great memories to look back on fondly!

These days, the “empty nester” Saturday’s are just as active, but in a different way. Chippy, our little rescue baby, has a built-in alarm system—nature calls at 6:30 AM. Awake and alert, we enjoy our morning coffee, our dog snuggled between us, and we discuss the coming events of the day. A movie? A drive to New York City? Hanging out in Philly?  A museum visit? Shopping? What are we having for our Saturday evening dinner? The vibe is relaxed and not rushed.  Time is the reward we receive when we are older and the kids are grown and on their own—time and using it in whatever way  you please!!

As an older girly-girl, I also love to sit at my vanity and take my time getting all primped for the day.   Which brings me to …………the eyes! I don’t know about you, but as I’ve gotten older (and wiser), my eye lashes and brows have thinned out considerably. I do not like that this has happened! Therefore, I’m always on the lookout for the next best thing to enhance my lovely, dark, crossed eyes!

I’ve heard about  the latest and greatest mascara-esque product. The instant eye lash extensions! Well, Atypical60’ers, I’m here to tell you about my experiences and a review for a great budget-minded lash extension kit from Physicians Formula! Read on while I “lash” out!

A while back I ordered a Lash Extension kit from Amazon the name is “Relian” the cost is about $30.00 and was still less expensive than other brands I researched.  I was pretty excited but when I opened the package, the instructions were written in Chinese. I had to Google instructions.  It worked fine, but for the price, I thought it could have been a better product.  Honest to god, I’m gonna tell you–it kills me that the lashes have thinned. When I was younger I had super long and thick lashes–and brows too. As a result, I’ve used Latisse, and Latisse works. However, it takes a good 16 weeks (yeah..that’s 4 months) to see results. You also have to keep up with it and my prescription was over $100.00.  I gave up Latisse after a year.  Next are the falsies. I love falsies, I love the way they make your eyes look but it takes me a while to apply them. Then there’s the mascara. I think I’ve been through every possible brand. My top three mascara brands are Lancôme, Tarte, and for the drugstore brand, Maybelline’s “The Falsies”.  But this lash extention stuff just intrigued me.  I saw and ad for the Physicians Formula Eye Booster Lash Extension Kit and had to try it. Luckily Rite Aid had plenty on display and I shelled out the $14.95.

Physicians Formula Eye Booster Instant Lash Extension Kit Sorry for the blurry picture–but I’m not a pro!

So..this morning I couldn’t wait to use this.  Here’s a pic of my “naked” eye!

Eye before Physicians Formula Lash StuffThis pic was taken with absolutely no makeup and before all the concealer, brow powder, chapstick on the lines, eye shadow, liner. blah, blah, blah.

I applied the first coat of the “mascara”, immediately followed by the “fibers”. Ummmm…not bad–let’s move on!First coat Instant lash extension I applied another coat. Thicker lashes, but not necessarily super lengthy……Second Coat Eye Closed…Something magical happened with the application of the third coat.  The lashes became lush…and the length was great!Second Coat Eye Opened Check it out—right?  Decent! I didn’t apply this to my bottom lashes. Actually, I don’t even apply mascara or liner to the bottom of my eyes.  Too much smudging and I really think that keeping eyes naked on the bottom makes the eyes appear larger!  CAVEAT!!!  I am NOT a makeup artist by any means. But I hafta say, this Physicians Formula Eye Booster Lash Extension Kit is greatness! Will I use it every day? Nah. If I’m home and not doing anything, I’ll use regular mascara. But for those days that I want my lashes to be more noticeable (FYI-I will go through great lengths–pun intended–to NOT use the word “Pop”. I cannot stand that word. I will use “more noticeable” or “stick out”  but I refuse to use “Pop”), I’ll definitely use this.  It’s a keeper and at $14.95, with a $7.00 rebate, the price is well-worth it! Hopefully, this is a product that’ll be around for a while.  Seriously. You HAVE to try this stuff! It works!!!!

Well, here’s my Saturday Face of the Day! I’m happy, got a lot accomplished. Now it’s time to prepare a dinner of Thai chicken!  OMG!!! Before I forget–one more thing. See my hair? I need to give a shout out to Adam at Bleu Mousse Hair Salon on Lancaster Avenue in Wayne, PA!  Adam is the king of blow outs!  This blowout is one week and one day old!!!! Hey! Don’t judge me–OK?  My hair is as dry as the Sahara–and  I lose so much hair that I can only wash it once a week.  More on that tomorrow readers!

FOTD All Done. 1 week 1 day blowout.Chippy king of the house

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! XOXOXO! Cathe and Chippy!

An Homage To A Grand Old Dame–Happy Birthday Miss Ruby!

She was great!  Beautiful. Lean. Strong. Affectionate when she wanted to be and, at times, slightly aloof.  She was a great companion. She was a neighborhood legend. She lived a wonderful and interesting life. When she was old and in pain, she never complained.  She was a very important and dear member of our family.  Today is her birthday and she is somewhere on a twinkling star, looking down at us with love and watching over us.  I’m saddened as I write this, but I remember the fond memories…and there were many. Here’s to you Miss Ruby!ruby 003 Our family dog–and it is just weird to call her a dog–because she was more than that.  I referred to her as a girl.  She was so regal–just like a princess and I remember the day we got her as though it were yesterday.  My oldest son was a bit put off that we ended up with a Yellow Lab rather than a Golden.  So on the way home, we placed her into his lap, and within 20 minutes, it was love.  She was the perfect playmate for the kids—and she never became annoyed at any of  their crazy antics!

ruby 006While the kids were in school, Ruby, along with our adopted Basset Hound, Dorothy, would keep me company. Always underfoot just waiting for me hand out a reward of liverwurst or taking a ride for their vanilla ice cream cones at the Cream King in Pennington, NJ!

She once saved our neighbor’s child from being hit by a car.  The child ran out into the street as a car was approaching. Ruby ran in between the child and the car. Luckily the car had strong brakes and all was well! She never roamed far from home, if the back gate was left opened, she would saunter to a neighbor’s yard to see if the kids were playing on the swings.  She would take turns sleeping in the kids’ bedrooms, being fair and showing no favoritism. She loved everyone!ruby 013 Her idea of fun was traipsing around the house stuffing as many objects as she could into her mouth.  I remember one time in particular, she had been outside and I heard her scratching on the door.  When I opened it, I almost passed out. She looked so proud of herself while a bird was dangling out of her mouth.  To this day I feel bad by the way I overreacted–yelling at her to “get that dirty thing away from me”!!!!!!!  When she tore the ligaments in her hind leg, due to a game I played with her, the vet was irate with me—but Ruby just showered me with affection as I nursed her back to health!

After my husband and I divorced, she moved with him to Manhattan. I was unable to have her in my apartment–but she became quite the Chic City girl.  As Ruby aged and  was no longer able to handle the five-floor walk up to my ex-s apartment, she came back to live with  me and my Frenchman and his Corgi. The two got along perfectly and her senior years were spent quietly.  It’s so painful when you know, deep down in your gut that your beautiful creature’s time on this earth is limited.  Selfishness sets in and you cannot say goodbye so you let her continue on.  Ruby continued on despite being ill and fragile.  The night before she left us, I found her in the living room,  laying under the coffee table. I bent down to ask her how she was doing (Yes. We spoke to her as though she was human.) The look in her eyes seemed to be begging me to let her go. I will never forget that look.ruby 012 The next day, Bonaparte, my Frenchman, took her to the vet. I was at the office.  When I came home, Bonaparte sat me down and explained that it would have been too much for me to have seen her in that much pain.  Ruby left four years ago at the grand old age of 17!  Today she would be 21! So with that, my dear Miss Ruby, Vincent and I will toast to your life and the happiness and joy you gave to all!  We will raise our glasses to the brightest star in the evening sky and thank you for your love and affection! Here’s to a Grand Old Dame!

Musings and Praise of Older Beauties.

I’m so happy to see that designers and advertisers are taking note of beautiful, mature and older women!  As I’ve gotten older, I’ve often wondered why so many designers, clothing manufacturers, and especially cosmetics companies keep using younger…and younger women and girls in their ads.  Are they not aware that we “older” women are spending millions upon millions of dollars in clothing, shoes, cosmetics, bags?  We’re top consumers!  So, my fellow Atypical60 readers, today I’m handing out kudos to some companies who have included older beauties in their campaigns!  Hugs and kisses to: Joni Mitchell for YSL YSL for including the wise, sage, talented and beautiful Joni Mitchell!  I’ve loved her since I was in my teens…and I can imagine she is singing my favorite Joni song in this ad–the beautiful “Cary” For the intellectuals, Celine has added the literary genius Joan Didion to their roster of models.  At 80 years young, she looks fantastic…and her age just makes her that more beautiful and appealing! Joan didion for CeleneJessica Lange Take a look at Jessica Lange.  Marc Jacobs  sure took a good look at her–and she is the face of Marc Jacobs  Cosmetics.  It’s about time cosmetics corporations realized that we love our cosmetics just as much as the younger women do too!  But you know what?  As great as it is that older women are being recognized, I wonder when the tide will change from having celebrities in every ad and magazine cover and go back to the models of a few decades ago.  To any of you who read “Teen” or “Seventeen” back in the ’60’s and ’70’s–remember Colleen Corby?small-colleen-corby-teen-cover-july-1965 I so much wanted to look like her and be her. To this day, I think she is the classic American Beauty.  I’m sure she is still gorgeous and, quite frankly, I would love to see her make a modeling comeback! Look at Patti Hansen!!!Patti+Hansen+Long+Hairstyles+Layered+Cut+EdSMbHlKzV-l  Look at Patti Hansen!!!!!She’s even more beautiful nowadays! I swear if I saw Patti Hansen on the cover of Vogue, I would go back to buying that dreadful, celebrity-obsessed publication! (My anger at Anna Wintour reached the highest level of all time after she placed Kim Kardashian and Kanye West on the cover last year. Ugh!) Every woman is beautiful..and sometimes I think that is a truth that is often forgotten. The beauty we had in our youth is a different beauty we acquire with age. Our lines give us a certain character that expresses our experiences–whether good or bad–and that’s OK! Our wisdom shines through. We don’t need to judge….It’s quite nice and lovely to age! Oh! One More Thing.   LET’S ALL SMILE MORE!!!! The past few days that I’ve been out and about, it has become very clear to me that most people don’t look happy. I’ve observed people looking stressed, appearing sad, having an expression that they are carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders and some just seem as though they are angry with the world! We all have bad days ( I, in particular am having a terrible day as a result of someone hacking into one of my accounts), but I think we should make an effort to smile more often.  I am taking a vow to do so–even if I appear slightly goofy, I don’t care!  My smile of the day is just for you! Smile for 2015 XOXOXO! Enjoy the day!

A Beauty-ful Wednesday to Ya!

Happy Hump-Day All!  The sky here is gray and the weather is bone-chilly, but I’m pumping sunshine on this particularly productive day!  Errands and chores are completed and I’m looking forward to my Wednesday evening with my Mob Wives!! That’s right–I’m always entertained by my girls Drita, Renee, Big Ang and Karen!  I have to admit, those women are a bit…um…..rough around the edges, and some of the stuff that comes out of their mouths would make a sailor blush!!  But the one thing I am enamored about is their make up!  Half the time I don’t even hear what they are saying because I’m too busy staring, open-mouthed, head to the side, eyes wide opened, just gazing at the perfection of the application of their eye liner, shadow, brows, lashes and lipstick. Fuggetabout the blush..those eyes–those lips!!!  I secretly hope that my cousin who lives on Staten Island, Annmarie–well, I hope her daughter Andrea gets married soon. This way I can have my makeup done at Drita’s LadyBoss Makeup Studio and walk into that reception looking just “Beauty-ful”!

Speaking of beauty, I wanted to share some of my “Atypical60 Beauty-ful” essentials with you.  I’ve got some tools that I am never without and some skin prep items that are always in steady supply.   Here’s they are!

Essential Tools. Magnifying Mirror. Little Mirror Tweezers Comp Eyelash CurlerEssential Prep Products. Olay. Peter ThomaASs Roth Jergens Albolene Whoa–as we women age, it seems that we lose the hair on our heads and strange little hairs start growing on our chinny-chin-chins. Am I right?   That’s where two magnifying mirrors come in handy. One, a larger mirror for your vanity and a smaller one for your purse.  I also keep one tweezer in my vanity and one in my purse.  Sometimes it is just easier to tweeze those little unsightly (and obvious) hairs in the car—for some reason, car lighting works very well. Just make sure the car is parked when attempting to tweeze.  It’s funny–but when I was younger, I had to pluck my brows every day, and now I only wish the brows were as lush as they were many years ago!

Due to the thinning of the eyelashes, I find that an eyelash curler (doesn’t have to be pricey, I use a Sally Hansen curler that I bought at Target for three bucks) does a great job in prepping the lashes for mascara or falsies!  Lastly, a double-layered teasing comb which I use for lift on my thinning hair.  These are my holy grail everyday beauty essential tools.

The skin prep items: No longer at that age of dewy, nubile, smooth skin, I need a little help from my friends in order to get the makeup application just right. First off, I cannot clean my face with anything else except Albolene moisturizing cleanser–it is lard for the face. This stuff cuts through layers of the strongest mascara and liner in one fell swoop! It literally melts on your face–like Mr. Miyagi of the Karate Kid, I wax on–wax off! Then I rinse my face off with warm water, pat dry with a towel, and smooth  old-school Olay lotion on my face. At $5.90 for 6 oz., this is a great value and works just as well, if not better than more pricey lotions! When I know that I’ll be outdoors, and especially in the warmer weather, I faithfully apply Peter Thomas Roth’s Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30 to my face. It’s the one pricier item I cannot be without–I’ve been using it ever since I had MOHS surgery on my face for skin cancer. It is non-oily and stays on all day even when you get sweaty. Also, it lasts forever so the $40.00 cost is well worth it! Primer is next.  The clear gel type works for me and I switch it up between Smashbox Photo Finish and Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Primer. I’ll tell ya, for about seven bucks, the Maybelline Primer is fantastic but really tough to find!  My other skin essential  is Jergen’s Natural Glow. I hate wearing pantyhose and I’m a fan of the bare-legged look. My fish-belly white legs need color and this is a safe way of giving them a tanned hue and moisture at the same time!  Now for the last and final prep: chapstick 002 That’s right! Chapstick! Sure, I use it on my lips, but did you know that this waxy balm works wonders to fill in little lines around your mouth and eyes? This little multi-tasking rascal is a steal for less than $2.00!

My methods may not be typical, but they work so well in a most “Atypical” way!!

XOXOXO–and have a most enjoyable evening!!!!!

All About the Shoes!

Yesterday’s weather was awful. Rainy. Damp. Sleet. Ice. Ugh. It was one of those stay-indoors-in-your-pj’s kind of day.  Feeling the need to be productive, or rather, at the suggestion of my Frenchman’s (my better half) need for me to be productive–I decided to saunter into my closet to organize my shoes! I got as far as the heels and the boots. The flats and sandals will be dealt with at another time.  Doing this gave me “foot” for thought. (Yes. Pun IS intended)

I love my shoes. I love the way my pointy-toed heels make my feet appear so nice and lean and feminine! Trust me–the only part of my body that is lean are my narrow feet; so when I’m having one of those days where I’m feeling a bit wide in the torso, or hips, or rear–I can always look down at my feet, dressed in their glorious pointy-toed, toe-cleavage bearing heels and know that at least one part of me is hotter than a honeymoon hotel! Seriously–I have to work the top half of my cleavage with industrial-strength push-up bras, but I know that my toe-cleavage needs no assistance as long as the vamp of the shoes are low cut, I’m in cleavage heaven!

Shoes also help my memory–and at this stage in life, we need to practice our memorization skills!  There are days when I can’t find a bill that I need to pay (selective losing?) and there are times that I have to call my cell phone from my house phone because my cell is somewhere in the bowels of a purse that I threw somewhere in the house or left in the car.  But you know what?   I can remember where I bought my first pair of Bass Weejuns–at H.A. Kalt in Bay Shore, NY.  My black pointy-squared suede kitten heels with the thin bow were purchased at Heyraud’s 6 years ago during the Winter sales in Paris, and my metallic pumps by Ivanka Trump were a steal at Nordstrom Rack.  The red Vince Camuto’s were a great buy at Macy’s–60% off but my black Dulci’s from J. Crew were full-price!  My memory serves me right when it comes to my shoe purchases.

I swear when I am an old, old lady, walking around town with one of those metal canes in hand,  I’ll be hunched over because of osteoporosis, and I’ll have about ten hairs on my head due to thinning hair and I’ll be lookin’ like Bette Davis as Baby Jane because my hands will be so shaky that my lipstick will be applied above my mouth as well as on it; and I’ll have whiskers on my chin, but my feet will still be awesome because I’ll be inching my way around  in killer heels!

Heels One XOXOXOXO!

A Great Weekend In Brooklyn, NY!!!

What a weekend!  My Christmas gifts from the kids included a great stay at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a “Bake the Book” class at Momofuku Milk Bar on Metropolitian Avenue, and a great dinner at El Almacen, an Argentinian restaurant also in Williamsburg!

Me and the kids!!!!

Let me start off by telling you about the Wythe Hotel–its a mix of industrial-funky-chicness-hipness all rolled into one. High ceilings, exposed brick walls, modern lighting.  The Wythe is a converted old factory on Brooklyn’s waterfront.   The rooms  are airy, incredibly clean, simple and understated; and the greatest part–heated concrete floors! (Anyone who knows me is well-aware of my aversion to carpeting. It’s disgusting–and the one thing I despise about hotels is that all floors are carpeted. Ugh!). The bar on the 6th floor, The Ides, offers a killer view of Manhattan–seriously, why if you stay in Manhattan you simply cannot get this great view–so head across the river and stay in Brooklyn!!  We had after-dinner cocktails at this bar and my eyes started tearing up at the beautiful and magical of NYC!!  I’ll tell ya, those bartenders worked their butts off and made spectacular drinks! Best Sidecars ever!  Also…the DJ played the best tunes–Squeeze, Pretenders, XTC–and even throwbacks to the late ’60’s with “Pictures of Matchstick Men” by Status Quo–I was in heaven!  Here’s some pics of our hotel room.  Sorry that I didn’t get good shots of the view from The Ides, but they didn’t turn out very well:

We stayed in the Historic King Room…as you can see, even the pidgeons seem to love this hotel!

Later on in the afternoon, I made my way over to the “Bake the Book” class at Momofuku Milk Bar.  The class was more of a way to learn how to assemble those fantastic Momofuku three-layered naked cakes.  Our instructor, Sarah, was adorable. She was extremely informative and helpful and offered some great tips on making those to-die-for Milk Bar cakes and truffles at home.  The tone was casual and informal–even serving beer to the attendees–how can you not love that?????? Here’s some pics that I took–again, as I go along I promise you–my photo skills WILL improve!

Momofuku Baking Class Cake before boxing. Momofuku Baking Class 2 Milk Bar Book Momofuku Baking Class Birthday Cake Truffles Momofuku baking class cake in box Momofuku Milk Bar Class Beer and cake

If you are visiting the NYC area and are looking for a fun activity–by all means try to sign up for one of these classes–I promise you will have a fun time! Trust me, I’m well acquainted with all things Momofuku–I have the Milk Bar Cookbook and make many of the recipes on a regular basis!  Go for it!!! Have a blast!

We ended up having dinner at El Almacen–which was a surprise treat!  This is a small restaurant on Driggs Avenue and the food and service was outstanding!  Our party of five started off with Avacado fries, Ceviche (possible the best I’ve ever had–so fresh and refreshing), and Guacamole and fresh chips.  Main plates were skirt steaks–done to perfection, grilled chicken, ribs, and the paella that I ordered was fantastic. Portions were perfect–just enough to keep us satisfied and not that over-stuffed feeling!   It was just too bad that the lighting didn’t lend itself for me to take even bad pics with my phone, but it was just way too dark.  What’s with that anyway? Did you ever notice that lately sooooo many restaurants are giving off this trendy dim lighting?  I don’t know ’bout you, but my eyesight is not too stellar–between being cross-eyed and having  poor vision, I need all the light I can get!!!!! Wasn’t a deal-breaker though because the food and service were excellent!

Oh…I forgot to mention. The parking sitch in Brooklyn made me do a happy dance in the middle of the street!   Listen–after years of living in Manhattan with a car, getting a coveted parking space was just shy of a miracle!  We had NO PROBLEM parking in Brooklyn!!!!  This, my dear friends is another reason to book a stay in Brooklyn! I’m actually OCD about parking–yup! Some are OCD about washing their hands a million times or locking and unlocking a door. Not me. My OCD-ness lies with having enough gas in my car and parking!!!

So that’s muh weekend folks!  I’ll try to cover some of my favorite shoes and beauty products this week.  But first, please be patient with my whilst I try to figure out glitches with the blog.  I still need to figure out widgets, tags, all that important stuff!

XOXOXOXOXO!
