Turnpike Angst, A Visit to the Old Neighborhood, Fun with My Girls–a Great Sunday!

After two harrowing trips on the NJ Turnpike, I’m, thankfully, here on this bright Monday morning to report about yesterday’s goings on!

With the clocks jumped ahead that one hour, I did wake up slightly more tired than usual, but with some strong coffee as my medicine, I was up and running on the road to NYC by 7:30 AM.

Yesterday was “girl’s day” all the way. I picked up Oona, stopped at my BFF’s Jeannie’s, had brunch then headed off to a fundraiser to support the McGough Academy of Irish Dance…but first, I have to vent about the less-than-stellar driving habits of some traveling along the NJ Turnpike.

These days, I’m used to the PA turnpike, which is really quite small when compared to the size of New Jersey’s part of “I-95”. (Better known to the tri-state residents as “The Jersey Turnpike”). Drivers on the PA Turnpike rarely signal, which is a complete lack of consideration.  In addition, the PA Turnpike is, for the most part, driven by its residents.

The Jersey Turnpike is another story; it’s a major thoroughfare.

400px-New_Jersey_Turnpike_Shield_svgI’ve spent many years driving from NJ to NYC on this road, but it was much better in the pre-texting, pre-cell phones days!

As such, there are lots of drivers from many different states. The worst being Virginia; and let me tell you, Virginia may be for lovers, but it certainly is not the state for great drivers.

I swear Virginia may be for lovers but it ain’t for great drivers! Get outta the left lane!

When I’m driving on 95, especially early on a weekend morning and traffic is at a minimum. I love the sight of the rising sun and I love listening to my music–it’s a very relaxing “me” time!  If there is one thing I cannot stand, however,  it’s a driver in the left lane that has NO intention of moving over at all when you are trying to pass. Those drivers also exhibit no intent of moving over, and  insists on using the left lane as their personal driving space and on this very same highway, decides to drive between 55 and 60 MPH! Most of those left-lane addicts sport Virginia plates! Where are the State Troopers? Why is it that the only drivers who seem to be pulled over are the ones going 80MPH or so? Why aren’t these drivers who use the left lane with no intent of using it as a passing lane and drive under the speed limit  pulled over?

Why aren’t those who endanger other drivers by yapping on their phones pulled over? Why aren’t texters pulled over?  The driving phone conversationalists are easy to spot. They are usually driving 45 miles an hour on a major highway or turnpike.  The texters are more dangerous–they not only drive slowly, but they continue to drift from lane to lane haphazardly–creating an even bigger danger–and the majority of them are NOT young drivers either!

Stop the madness. I want to get where I’m going in one piece. Actually I just want to GET where I’m going!

To make matters worse, as soon as I crossed the GW into Manhattan, and got on Riverside Drive to merge onto the Henry Hudson Drive, a car going 25 MPH in a 50MPH zone pulled out from nowhere and into the middle of traffic. Virginia plates!!! I’m not the only one who beeped my horn, slammed on the brakes, made a motion with one of my fingers and yelled out a four-letter word that was not “snow”!

It was a pleasure to be back in the City. Before we moved to NJ, we lived in the upper-most tip of Manhattan—just above Washington Heights in the neighborhood known as “Inwood”.

map-inwood---manhattan-ny-hotelsThis is “Up” Uptown–a hidden gem in NYC!

It’s one of those neighborhoods where everyone knows everyone else. People watch out for each other (i.e. when my car battery was being stolen, one of the neighborhood’s residents who knew me from a friend of a friend, rang my doorbell immediately to let me know what was going on), the area west of Broadway is very residential with beautiful apartments and homes. Inwood Hill Park has a ton of activity during the warmer months—from tennis to softball to baseball games.

Inwood hill park

Birds on ice at Inwood Hill Park

Henry Hudson bridge uniting Manhattan to The Bronx!

My phone camera is still on the blink—I did manage to get two pics of the park looking over to Riverdale in the Bronx. I have to visit the Apple store today to get this camera fixed.

The playground in the park was a great hangout for we moms and the kids all learned social skills at a very young age. It was, and still remains, one of the most affordable areas in the City—you get a ton of space for your money and the neighborhood is accessible to both the “A” train and the No. 1.

So anyway, to make a long story shorter, I picked up Oona (she’s staying at her dad’s apartment in Inwood until she finds a roommate) and then we ventured off in search of a parking space. With luck on my side we found one in less than two minutes. One thing I was so happy about—as was she, I have not lost my touch for parallel parking. Man, I was able to park my car in one fell swoop and without any love taps to the cars in front and behind me.

With the slushy mix of melting ice and snow, it was a challenge to walk up the hill to Jeannie’s, but it was worth it.   Our one “cuppa tea” turned into three and we spent quite some time reminiscing about our days hanging in the playground, driving to the beach and to Tallman pool with six kids in the car and the fact we gave our kids snacks and my lack of a set bedtime for my kids during the summer.   Were we the worst mothers in a time when the “earth mother” brigade was in full force? No, even though we did not wear Birkenstocks and wore makeup, we were excellent mommies! *note to self—write a future post about my mothering abilities.

It had been a while since I actually spent a bit of time in my old neighborhood It’s usually spent dropping someone off or picking someone up—but today was so great. I hadn’t realized just how much I missed it and missed Jeannie! And for once, I loved spending time with Oona in her territory, not downtown or here in PA. It gave very warm feeling and a feeling of that sense of familiarity. I really miss City living so much!

We enjoyed a great brunch at Indian Road Café and Market—which, back in my day was a local little grocery store we just called “Murrays”. The walls that housed bread, milk, eggs and processed cold cuts have been replaced with a very hip little meeting place. It’s great—and it makes me so happy to see it filled with young families and older residents. A place where the community can get together for some very good food and a great atmosphere! It’s charming and I am all about going back!

ny_inwood_indian_road_cafe_scavenger_antiques_1_862

I cannot wait to get back to this café. I only wish it were in Inwood when I lived there!

Our last stop of the girl’s day was up in Yonkers. Or as I like to say “Yonkizz”. It’s been awhile since I drove through the Bronx and up north—so like any BFF, I handed my keys to Jeannie and said “You’re driving”—which was a great move because she is extremely laid back when it comes to driving on the Major Deegan—as I am not!

We attended a fundraiser up at Rory Dolan’s for the McGough Academy of Irish Dance.

A school that’s a shining and rising star!

Oona used to dance with the teachers who run McGough. In fact, she and one of McGough’s teachers and Associate Director, Megan DiBiase, started dance together and have been friends since they were four years old! There is something very special when your childhood friends remain throughout your life and into adulthood. It was nice to see my daughter support and be happy for her friend’s success!

oona and megan

Megan (l) and Oona (r). circa 2007. Four Provinces Feis, PA. Open Champions–Megan 1st, Oona 2nd!  Miss those fun days!

We had a fun time recalling old competition days and watching this new generation of Irish Dancers was a pleasure! The kids were not only adorable, but incredibly talented. I’ll tell you, McGough Academy of Irish Dance is only going to become more and more successful!   A tip o’ the wig and a bow of the jig shoes to you ladies. Thanks for a fun afternoon.

With Jeannie dropped off, and Oona dropped off, I was able to reflect on my drive home—thankfully distracting me from Virginia driver road rage upon my return back to PA.

Friends are important—and sometimes life’s events may cut you off from those great friends. But somehow, other life events manage to bring you back together and you just pick that friendship back up is if there were no pause. Life is great that way, isn’t it?   Life is even better when you can be happy for the success of others and know that you can share in that success!

There are many times when I wish I lived back in the City. Sometimes I get really upset about it. I miss the excitement. I miss working down on Wall Street—the best job I ever had in my life, but the new Wall Street isn’t the old Wall Street I worked on! I miss being 30 pounds lighter because I walked everywhere! EVERYWHERE! I miss the feeling of community and that feeling of security of living in a sturdy pre-war apartment building. I miss being able to walk down to that corner store if I ran out of milk instead of having to get into a car and driving. I miss the fact that I could feel safe knowing that major hospitals were well within emergency distance—just in case I fell off the subway platform, or if got hit by a city bus or if a brick fell off a building and onto my head. (I’m a hypochondriac—what can I say?).

But I’m lucky. I got to come home to Monsieur Bonaparte—who is always happy to see me no matter how much of a pain-in-the-ass I am. Besides, after being on the turnpike, I needed that aperitif those aperitifs!  And at the end of a most spectacular day, I was snuggled in bed and nodded off into a restful state of being!

XOXOXOXO!  Since March is for St. Pats and the Irish Dancing madness has begun, here’s a rockin’ version of one of Oona’s set dances “King of the Fairies” performed by Horslips!

Awww. Pluck it! Some Chicken and The “Ulta”m”IT”e Makeover! (Part Une)

Happy Saturday. I have my “IT” cosmetics makeover this afternoon. This makeover is going to be the highlight of my day and it’s going to be a challenge for the IT cosmetics makeup artist. Imagine—turning me into the ultimate beauty!

Last night’s soufflé was a success. Monsieur Bonaparte ate the entire thing-whilst I wolfed down a Weight Watchers Smart Ones followed by half a bottle of Michel Lynch –which, BTW is a GREAT and inexpensive red wine!   Soufflés are fun to make—and they rise so beautifully—in the oven, but the second you take them out, they start to deflate!

souffle in the oven nice and high

See how high the top of the soufflé got in the oven?

Once it comes out of the oven it begins to deflate immediately

If I had been quicker taking a picture, the soufflé wouldn’t have been so deflated. It deflates so quickly after taking it out of the oven!

Doesn’t matter how it looked. Monsieur at the whole thing. I CAN believe he ate the whole thing!

We watched two more episodes of House of Cards before falling asleep!

Anyway, I’m not going to wear any makeup at all except for brow powder and a bit of mascara today. And lip balm. I want to go into this totally fanaked! (My invented word for “face-naked”)!

In the meantime I’ll get the tweezers, my magnifying mirror and pluck some unsightly (?) hairs from my chin. I’ll tell ya Menopause keeps me busy—imagine going through this every day! THIS is beauty reality. *Note to self: Aww, Pluck it—research that “NoNo” hair removal system!

Beauty is ugly. Pluck it.

Pluck it! THIS is the reality of beauty during and past Menopause! Hell, I’m far from pretty, but I know how to work it!

You know what? I really must have been a little devil as a child. Look at my cowlicks. Two horns! I am going to send this pic to the producers of “American Horror Story”—maybe they will hire me. I do look pretty horrific—Don’t you think? *Nya ha ha* *twirls mustache*!! Hmmm.I'm a devilish old lady and I have the horns to prove it!

Are these tufts of hair really devilish horns? Or–are they cowlicks. Or–better yet, could it be hair growing over my receding hairline? Oh if it is, I’m so thrilled!

Fanaked--except for brow powder lip balm eyeliner and a bit of mascara. Hey. I don't wanna scare anyone. WTF happened to my came

First of all, my apologies for this dopey filter. I don’t know WHAT I touched on my phone’s camera, but this filter bugs me. I want all of my flaws to shine through. That being said, I’m ALMOST FANAKED except for a light touch of brow powder, mascara, a thin line of eyeliner and Chapstick lip balm. Nothing else is on my face. My apologies for the filter! Ugh!

What else is on today’s agenda? I’m making Chicken Veronique this evening. Chicken with grapes in a cream-based sauce. It’s actually quite delicious!

Ingreeds for Chicken Veronique. I have to get shallots later today!

Ingreeds: Grapes,  chicken broth, White Wine (Mouton Cadet is a great cooking and drinking wine and dirt cheap!), heavy cream and chicken. (I put lemons over the chicken to keep it fresh before I put it in the fridge–covered with cling, naturally.) I have to get the shallots later!

Here’s how I make it:

Ingreeds: 2 large chicken breasts cut in half. 2 tsp butter, 2 shallots—sliced thinly, 1/2 cup dry white wine, 1 cup of chicken broth, 1 1/2 cups (about 40-45) green, seedless grapes, salt and pepper to taste. Rice flour for dredging. If you want, you can also add some fresh thyme or Herbes de Provence.

Run the breasts under cold water and pat dry. Then put them on a cutting board and pound them to an even flatness (I also think this tenderizes the chicken as well). (This can also be done in advance). Salt and pepper the chicken.

Pounding the chicken gets them nice and evenly flattened out. It also makes ’em tender too!

Dredge the chicken in a thin coating of rice flour—If you don’t have rice flour, sift regular flour onto a plate and dredge the chicken.

Bobs-Red-Mill-White-Rice-Flour-039978013163I’ve purchased this at Wegman’s and Walmart. It lasts for quite a while and it is gluten free!

TIP: Monsieur Bonaparte HATES any meat dredged in regular flour. For him, the flour leaves a heavy coating and taste—I’ve learned through trial and error that rice flour is excellent for dredging. First of all, it is so light that you cannot taste it—secondly, that light coating really seals the juices of the meat so nicely. If you cannot find rice flour, Wondra flour is a great dupe!

Melt half the butter in a pan and cook the breasts,–if you need more butter, add it– then take the breasts out of the pan and set aside on a plate. Better yet, place the breasts in a warm oven so they don’t get cold. (200 oven)

Add remaining butter and shallots to the pan, stir the shallots so they don’t burn—you just want them nicely softened. Add the wine and boil to reduce by half. Add broth, reducing by half again; add the cream and any juice from the chicken. Bring to a boil. Add the grapes and cook under a low flame for about 4 to 5 minutes.

Slice the breasts and spoon the sauce over the chicken. Serve with a salad or veg.

TIP: Use lemon to clean cutting boards. The acid from the lemon really does a great job in cleaning. See this board? Oona made it in middle school—thank you Hopewell Valley Regional School District for offering so many fun classes to the student!

Lemon does a fantastic job of cleaning cutting boards. This board is my sentimental favorite. Oona made it when she was in 6th grade. Timberlane Middle School, Pennington, NJ.  HVRSD–I miss those days so much!

Soon I’ll be out and about, running errands before my big makeover! I’m wearing a pair of Black over-the-knee boots by Nine West. I purchased them in 2013 and they’ve held up nicely. Jeans are Gap Skinny (thank god for the stretch because I’ve gained some weight this winter). The sweater is from ModCloth. It’s the infamous Airport Greeting Sweater. This sweater is an absolute favorite. I love it so much—it can be zipped all the way up or just a bit. It is so versatile! Under the sweater is a sleeveless T from Uniqlo-I wear it backwards because of the illusion of a higher neckline. Actually, I wear most plain T shirts backwards for this reason! Nothing to do with modesty, I just think a higher neckline looks better on me!

Easy outfit for an “Outandabout” Saturday. Here’s a closeup (Ugh..that darn filter..) of the sweater with the backwards T shirt.  I cannot tell you enough about how much I love this sweater!

Off for some Saturdayness! XOXOXOXO! I’ll be reviewing my makeover later on!

Here’s some Chicago. Even though it’s too cold, think about “Saturday in the Park”–it’s happy!

I Shaved My Legs Today! The Stubble was Too Much for Monsieur Bonaparte!

Oh Menopause! Oh Menopause! You have taken the precious locks from atop my fair skull only to bestow thy legs with that very same hair in which I must shave. I shan’t comply on a daily basis. Thou needs thy slobby and slothy days! Oh Yay! Oh Yay!

Time to get thee looking human before the cosmetics witch boils up a brew that turns me into a true sloth with eyes crossed eyes of a newt!

Witches%20Brew_LRGShe hasn’t shaved her legs in a week. Let’s turn her into the sloth of an animal she is! “Bwaaaaaaaa”

Besides–Bonaparte mentioned that my legs felt a bit “stubbly“–it could have been worse, he could have said they looked stubby!

It's about time

I’m sure I missed a spot!

I have finally shaved my legs. I think it’s been—what?? Three, four days? Now my gams are smooth, but one is noticeably more orange due to the staying power of the Neutrogena “Build -a-Tan”. I should have applied it over the Jergens Natural Glow, but laziness is my friend this week!

The Neutrogena build-a-tan does have staying power–it just turns a bit “orange”. I’m Jackie O-Lantern Leg!

Boredom is so underrated! I’ve decided to do my face and wear something other than Old Navy PJ bottoms and a sweatshirt.   In the meantime, do you want to see what’s in my medicine cabinet?

medicine cabinet 1

Bottom and Middle Shelves–Bottom: “Gray Away” Spray, Deodorant, Kiehl’s “Crème de Corps” lotion (which I had to take away from Chippy–he must’ve thought it was frosting., Kiehl’s “Ultra Facial Cleanser”, old school “Olay” lotion, Kiehl’s face cream (sample) Eau de Fleur D’Oranger toner. (This is GREAT! I purchase it each time I go to Paris. It’s dirt cheap and doesn’t dry my skin)! Middle shelf: Toothpaste, Miracle Hair fibers (to cover a la baldness).

Medicine cabinet 2

Top Shelf: Furterer Leave-in Hair Conditioner, Living Proof Styling Cream (for summer use), Ouidad hair serum (this is the best anti-frizz serum I’ve ever used–again, for summer use), DermMatch (another product I use to cover my bald spots)..and Toppik (yet ANOTHER) product for my hair loss.  * See my post about my hair loss journey:

My Hair Lady–the Bald and the Beautiful

It’s ironic that me, a self-diagnosed hypochondriac, has no medicine whatsoever in the medicine cabinet. (Caveat—Bonaparte keeps his medicinal items in our master bath. So basically, I have two bathrooms). What it does house are mostly products to disguise my hair loss, other hair items, toothpaste and some face stuff. I rarely take OTC drugs—and Monsieur has taken all my OTC drugs away from me. He cannot understand my logical thinking of taking 4 Tylenol for a headache. Nor can he process my philosophy of consuming an entire bottle of Nyquil when I feel a cold coming on. Therefore, I must seek his permission when I need to cure a simple malady.

nyquil

Bonaparte:  “Cassee, eez aperitif time. You want Kir Royale, Non, Oui?”

Me: *cough* *Sniff* *sneeze* “Non. Merci. Just pour the NyQuil into a champagne flute for me!” *wipes nose on sleeve of sweatshirt in tissue.

This sample of Jose Maran Argan oil was sitting in a cubby in my makeup desk, so I took it out and put it on my face.

Josie Maran Argan OilNothing happened.

It didn’t do anything. I’m not understanding all this Argan/Moroccan oil worship. It goes on oily, but then makes my skin dry. Same thing with the hair. I’ve used both types of oil in my hair and a day later my hair is super dry. Is there something wrong with me? Is there something wrong?

Tomorrow I’m going for a makeover at Ulta. It Cosmetics is having a promo day and I’m really excited. I LOVE makeovers. I need to keep my wallet home for obvious reasons!  Lately my MUFE HD foundation seems to be very cakey looking. I don’t know if it is due to the god-awful winter weather or what—but I feel more hydration is needed.   I applied my usual brow/well-rested/crème concealer then I brushed Bare Minerals “Cultured Pearl” shadow on my lids and up to my brow bone.

BM cultured pearlGives a nice pearlized glow to the eyes!

I followed with Stila’s “Clay” in the crease of my lids.

Stila Clay from Ini the know

Another item hits pan!

Since I’m not going anywhere today, I applied my Relian Lash Extension Mascara kit. Physician’s Formula is much better, but I don’t want to waste it.   A thick winged eyeliner application was next. Sephora’s felt tipped eyeliner is great for this because of the felt tip.   The experts say not to pull on your eyelid when applying eyeliner. I say baloney—my 60 year old eyes have wrinkles and crow’s feet—in order to get a halfway decent wing, I NEED to pull the lid back. Seriously—are any of these “experts” older than 30? Do any of them NOT have plastic surgery or fillers? Get real. Old eyes wrinkle.

pulled lidYes. In order to get “this”, I pulled and tugged on my old, wrinkled eyes!

eyes not that bad

And I even mascared my bottom lashes! You likey the eye-eez?

Sad day today. Make up funeral for my Too-Faced “Sweet Pea”. The last stroke of blush used, I threw out the container. Only to find it in Chippy’s mouth moments later.   It’s back in the trash.

Bye bye blush

Gone to Cosmetics Heaven. R.I.P. Sweet Pea!

I think I applied almost every gloss I own. I wanted to see if I could get my lips as shiny as the ads in magazines. I did, but couldn’t wait to wipe it off—I felt like I had an oil slick on the mouth.

All were used

Boredom at it’s best–or worst; On the lips: Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, NYX Wonder Pencil in Medium (to line the lips), MUFE Rouge Artist Intense  36, Forever 21 Sparkling LipGloss Pink/Fuschia, Lancôme Juicy Tube LipGloss in Ultra Brilliant, femme couture Plumping Gloss XXL Lip Shine and Neutrogena Lip Smoother in Gleam 40.

My lined old lady lips should be in an advertisement–don’t you think?

The hair hasn’t been out of a bun in days. Days!!!   Actually, it looks pretty decent and nice and wavy. A new way to “Set” my hair!

Wavey hairAfter days in a bun, here’s the result!

Thank god my Jacrew (my family’s code name for J. Crew—I’ve let you in on a secret) Minnie pants still fit. My body feels like a complete stuffed sausage though. I’m tracking points but only for meals. I’m selectively omitting the handfuls of chocolate and peanut butter chips and raw cookie dough that I’m gorging on! That’s just not good. An oversized sweater hides my muffin, cake sheet cake top that is spilling like soft frosting over those Minnie pants!

OOTD

OOTD–real clothing!

I finished baking the Momofuku Blueberries and Cream Cookies.

blueberries and cream cookiesI forgot about Lent and ate one some.

Here’s the recipe from Bon Appetit. This is a great recipe by the way…

http://www.bonappetit.com/recipe/blueberry-and-cream-cookies

..and started preparing the cheese soufflé for this evening.

I use the inexpensive store-brand Parm to line the soufflé dish. The yolks will be used to make lemon curd!

The soufflé is for Bonaparte. I’m having fish and spinach. (4 points. The aperitifs I’ll have beforehand are 16 points. I don’t know how many points I ate in cookie dough today. I’m shameful).

This is all I wanna do. Go outside barefoot…and not in the snow!

Yes. I went outside barefoot

I need to become hired soon. Lord knows what I’ll do next!

Have you been following what this disgusting British “journalist” ( I use that term very loosely), Katie Hopkins has been saying about Kelly Clarkson? Well, Kelly Clarkson, that cutie with the amazing voice and winner of Season One’s “American Idol”, had a baby about 8 months ago. Clarkson is still carrying around the baby weight and this priggish woman has been very vocal and insulting to Clarkson.Hopkins Remarks about Clarkson

kelly-clarkson

Kelly Clarkson-adorable as ever!

I applaud Clarkson for putting her child’s needs first and I also applaud her for not trying to get to a size “0” after the birth of her daughter. Clarkson’s weight is a non-issue. She’ll lose it or she won’t –it doesn’t matter because she is still adorable. This Hopkins woman needs to look in a mirror and assess the way she looks before making disparaging remarks about others.

Honey, you need to look  in a mirror before you make nasty remarks about others.

i'm looking old

Poke fun at me instead!

Let me tell ya, I may be cross eyed, hairy in places I shouldn’t be and hairless in places that should be hairy—but this Hopkins broad looks like a direct descendant of centuries of inbreeding!  Am I wrong in thinking this Katie Hopkins is the most vile woman on earth?

Whew-with nothing to do, I sure wrote  a lot about nuthin’! Hey, it’s all in good fun!

More Snow, Madeleines and the Cote d’Azur!

This winter’s weather is getting to me and I’m feeling really “blah”.

We’re in the middle of the snow storm we should have had in January. Or February. It’s been snowing all day with no end in sight.

Out the front door

Out the front door!

We will not be dining on the deck any time soon!

I know that when life gives you lemons you make lemonade. Right??? Well…when life gives you snow, you bake! Or at least I bake!   Earlier today I baked a couple of batches of cookies and Madeleine’s for Monsieur Bonaparte!

travel thursday 010There’s more where this came from!

Pans prepared and epic bumps on those tasty little cakes!!

He deserved it! After all, he’s been taking Chippy out to do his business while I do nothing except lay on the sofa like a queen waiting for somebody to peel grapes for her! Nah—not really.

Today’s batch of Madeleine’s turned out superb. Check out that “bump” on the back. Gorgeous!   My “go-to” recipe is Dorie Greenspan’s. I’ll repost it for you:

Dorie Greenspan Madeleine Recipe

All I want to think of is traveling. Our annual visit to France is now on my mind. My love of Paris will never subside. Paris, for me, is a place where I can absolutely lose myself. I can spend hours—and I mean hours rummaging through old books in my favorite used book shop on Rue Dauphine or pursuing French music CD’s at Boulinier on Blvd. Saint-Michel.   Fun and lively dinners with Bonaparte’s family are the norm, as are running the many errands needed.

Paris Tour Eiffel Closer

The Eiffel Tower..

Paris seine AM

Walking along the Seine….

Paris Sacre Ceuor

An “Amelie” moment at Sacre Coeur are familiar sights!

But our true vacation starts when we leave Paris for Nice. The moment the plane lands, ten days of relaxation and stress-free living welcomes us.

Our time is spent Theoule-sur-Mer, a small town south of Nice and next to Cannes. It’s paradise. We stay in “La Galere”, a gated community, and have rented the same apartment for the past five years. Bonaparte must have been a travel agent in a past life, because he is the most disciplined and budget-minded traveler on earth. Is it ok if I tell you how we manage to do this?

La Galiere

La Galere, Theoule-sur-Mer

First of all, we save a set amount of money each pay period. We do this all year and have a “vacation” bank account. I’m telling you, once you get used to not having that money in your pocket, you don’t miss it.

11-05-13-piggy-bank

Save and cut corners–even if it means a sacrifice or two!

We live frugally. I don’t mean we live like cheapskates either. We only go out to dinner a few times a year and when we do, it’s to a really fine restaurant. No matter how much of a chore cooking dinner can be at times, it’s less expensive and more convenient than getting dressed, getting into the car, driving to “local chain restaurant”, waiting for a table, waiting for your food, and so on.

We don’t go to bars. Let’s face it, we’re at that “empty nest” age, and if we want a drink, we’ll make a couple of “Kir Royale’s” and have some good conversation at home. Saves money—especially with the price of drinks these days!

kir royales

Cassis and Champagne (or Blanc de Blanc) = Kir Royale!

When we take a long weekend away, we’ll check the specials that Hotels have to offer. Really—sometimes the hotel sites have better “special” rates than the online discount sites.

We travel to France before “high” season. We travel mid-June through early July. We beat the European vacationers. This means we pay about half of what the cost is to rent an apartment in the Cote d’Azur during July and August.

Calendar%20Image-1524x975Taking a vacation during “off” peak season saves a ton of money!

Although the number of people who also do this is increasing, the amount of people at the beaches and sightseeing is still very manageable.   The only place we’ve had to wait on a line is Geant, the hyper-marche in Mandelieu. We get our groceries there—and the place gets crowded—especially on Friday and Saturdays because it’s closed on Sunday!

Geant

This is where the grocery magic begins…and..

Cote d' Azur. Geant. Lines on a Friday.

This is where we wait to pay for that magic!

Renting an apartment also affords us many conveniences. We can pack light because I can do laundry. (I travel with more beauty products than I do clothes!). It allows you to live like the locals. When you live like the locals and do daily shopping at the hyper Marché, you learn to speak the native language very quickly. It’s also fortunate that we’ve got a rapport with the owner of the apartment we rent. He knows we are excellent visitors and we make sure we leave the place immaculate upon our return to Paris!

Flowers along the walkway to the apartment and that spiral stairway lead us to….

Our lovely rental. The living room leads out to a great terrace and…

The cute little kitchen has plenty of room to cook for the two of us. Isn’t that little window adorable?  But the best part is………….

The terrace–check out the view! It’s amazing! And….

We spend our meal time here enjoying each other’s company and the sea!

We have our daily routine. We get up early; enjoy coffee and croissant and either head down to the beach or the community’s pool for a couple of hours. Then we’ll spend the afternoons sightseeing, or discovering places unknown. Our evenings are spent on the terrace, enjoying dinners of fresh produce, fresh seafood, and fine wine.

We hit the pool early, not crowded at all. Check out the cool diving board !

We always spend a day in St. Tropez, Bonaparte’s dad lives there and I love spending time with him. He’s one of the funniest and flirtatious Frenchmen I’ve ever met! There’s so much to see in the South of France –and it would be impossible to see everything in one visit, that’s why we love to return. A day trip to Eze is on the top of our list for this year.

Here’s some random pics I took last summer:

Boat docked in Cannes. Outdoor flea market in Cannes

Roosters in Biot. I have to go back to bring some home with me!

Driving through Massif d L’esterel on the way to ….somewhere!

Two “artsy” pics. My Old Navy flip flops on the beach in Frejus and a random pic from a rocky little cliff.

Theoule. Found this in a book at the apartment. An Article about Vincent's Grandfathers House in Provence

Talk about “divine intervention” and “coincidence”–THIS is a page from a book that was in the apartment we rent. It’s about Bonaparte’s grandfather. How cool is that?

Cote d' Azur Me so happy to wake up in the AM here!

Me. With a REAL tan and a load of freckles. Do you think I would go away and NOT be able to find a salon that can give me a blow-out and give me straight hair?  Top priority baby. Top priority! Also–I take a break from foundation and blush. Just light eye makeup for me! Funny thing is I still travel with a ton of beauty supplies!

Sitting here and looking out my window at the snow that is still falling makes me long for nights on the terrace in Theoule—listening to the music of the Cicadas and toads in a cadence with the sea that just rocks me into a deep slumber!

XOXOXOXO!

This song is for you. “Assedic”—it’s the name of the French Unemployment benefits department. Only the French can make a sexy song about this subject. I love it because of it’s relaxed summery vibe. Enjoy!

Waiting for the Snow–Not Godot!

Like Vladimir and Estragon waiting for Godot, Bonaparte and I will, unfortunately, be waiting for snow. And—as in the absence of the elusive Godot, I sure hope the snow won’t show!

menunggu-godot-samuel-beckettI would rather wait for Godot than this awful snow!

In the meantime, The Milk Crumb for my Momofuku Blueberries and Cream cookies is made.

Milk crumb

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: “Please God, please do not make me be tempted by this luscious, sweet, delicious Milk Crumb. Please give me the strength to walk away and not pick at it, for if I do, there shall be non left for the Momofuku Blueberries and Cream cookies that everyone loves so much. Amen”

I’ve got a batch of Corn cookie dough resting in the fridge for baking, and Bonaparte will bring home some lemons after he sees his clients.

Corn cookie dough ready to bakeOh. and God. While I’m at it, can you give me the strength to not eat this salty/sweet cookie dough too?  Thank you!

The lemons are needed to make his Madeleines. I’ll be driving into New York on Sunday and I’ll bring some cookies for the kids!

The milk, bread, and eggs are at the ready for the snow that will be falling throughout the night.

milk bread eggsWe can have healthy egg dishes or low-fat, low-carb sandwiches of which Monsieur Bonaparte will not be pleased! He loves his fat and carbs higher!

Right now, it’s a mess outside. This is the ice on my deck—and the ice on the road isn’t any better.

The icy deckI could be skating on this icy sheet outside my door!

I’m tired of bundling up. I’m tired of wearing way too many articles of clothing just to take Chippy outside to do his business. I wish he could be toilet-trained!

What to do on a day like today? Well, I have to edit my contribution to FrenchEntree before I submit. Then, I will take myself downstairs, wrap a big blanket around my body, sit on my big ol’ comfy sofa, take the remote, click on the TV and do nothing except catch up on trashy TV!  When I tire of those shows, I’ll put some food in my brain and continue reading “My Father’s Glory” by Marcel Pagnol. Then I’ll finish off with my millionth viewing of my favorite movie of all time “Amelie”.

I'll be spending my day plopped hereI’ll be here–wrapped in a blanket and…..

Crying like a baby when Nino and Amelie finally kiss!

Have you listened to the soundtrack of “Amelie”? Yann Tiersen’s music is haunting, and beautiful and never gets old. Have a listen to some of the beautiful music:

XOXOXOXOXO! I’m off to do nothing for the remainder of the day!

Plumping My Big Mouth, Burning Rubber and Some Faux Channel!

Oh boy. This is a good day! You know, the past few days that I’ve been out and about driving in my car, I noticed the scent of rubber. I noticed this smell again today and I started to freak out. At first I thought that my car was burning from the engine. I pulled over and didn’t open the hood because my car is dirty from the winter weather. But I looked over the hood to see if anything was burning. All was fine.

car smokeWhat is that rubber smell?

Then I checked the tires—hey, maybe a tire was starting to burn. Who knows—right??? Tires were fine.

burning tire

Whew, not the tires!

I checked the back seat. I thought perhaps Chippy got bored while I was in a store and started to eat the car’s seat down to that rubbery foam filling. Nope!

Chippy waiting to go out with meThank goodness Chippy’s palate is discerning!

My hypochondriac thoughts started to get the best of me. My memory took me back to fourth grade. St. Patrick’s school library. I read a book about Louis Pasteur. One of his children died of a brain tumor. He realized the child had a brain tumor when complaining about smelling rubber. And there was no rubber to be smelled! Isn’t it amazing how certain things stick in your mind throughout your life?

Naturally, I thought the worst. Well, to make a long story short. The scent of rubber was coming from my Hunter boots. I’ve been wearing them because I don’t want to ruin my leather boots in this snow, icy, slushy weather. I hadn’t realized how rubbery the boots smell—or how sensitive my nose is!

The Rubber CulpritsThe rubber-scented culprit! Boy do they stink!

I’m feeling much healthier this afternoon!

While cleaning organizing a small closet, I found yet, another tote bag. In this tote bag I found “rediscovered” a lip gloss that I never realized I had.   The brand is “fc”, “femme couture”.XXL Plumping Gloss Lip Shine. I seriously had to Google this because I could not for the life of me remember where I purchased it. I bought it at Sally Beauty Supply. This gloss was an inexpensive purchase at $4.99.   The pink color is very pretty so I figured I would apply it today while I was getting ready.

Femme Couture XXL Plumping Gloss lip shine

In the first place, I have big ol’ fish lips. The mouth that was rather fetching when I was in my twenties hasn’t aged well. Due to having the dermatologist freeze-burn many little “things” above my lips and those little tiny lines, my big mouth has seen better days!

What the heck, perhaps I could achieve Lisa Rinna lip status without the surgery—right? ( Lisa is my favorite Beverly Hills housewife. I love her!).

lisa_rinna_lipsShe has a bigger mouth than I do–shocked?

Take a look at my before and after pics. No difference.

They look slightly plumper with the assistance of a clear coat of Neutrogena Lip Smoother.

Additional clear glossAn additional coat of clear gloss. Neutrogena Lip Smoother–looks a bit more plump but no real difference in size!

What I will happily attest is this—The Femme Couture XXL Lip Plumping Gloss has remarkable staying power. Here’s a pic an hour and a half later.

An hour and a half after application it's still on!Kisses! An hour and a half later and still going strong! We have a winner–and an inexpensive winner at that!

The gloss also has a nice texture—it’s shiny without the gloopy gloppy heavy feeling of many other glosses. This is better than high-end glosses that I’ve used. We’re expecting a wintry mix tonight and snow tomorrow afternoon, but if we get a break, I’m driving to Sally Beauty to pick a couple more of these tubes. The price and quality can’t be beat. So what if it doesn’t plump the lips—the staying power is good enough for me!

Being stir-crazy from the weather, I loaded my Chippy into the car and off we went to the mall. Old Navy is having a 30% sale today and I wanted to see if I could pick up some basic summer t-shirts. I couldn’t find the fitted shirts that I like, but tried on a white sleeveless eyelet shirt. It looked much better on the hanger. My body type really, really looks much better in fitted clothing. The shirt was too short and was shapeless.   Way too baggy across the torso.

unflattering blouse at ON

Nice shirt, but not a flattering look on my body type!

Sweaters and some tops can look great if the fit is generous—but still needs to have shape. Clothes with no shape at all don’t flatter anyone. Just my opinion!   Here’s a maxi skirt I ended up purchasing. I love the way the fabric falls—there isn’t too much fabric so you won’t get lost in the skirt—and it won’t look “Duggarish” I like the slits on the side because the skirt won’t be confining in ninety-degree weather. It’s a nice purchase for a summer evening. Paired with a fitted white or navy tee and it’ll be perfect!

A nice white or navy tee and thin, flat sandals will give this maxi a great summer look! Chippy looks bored!

Next stop-Nordstrom Rack. I found “rediscovered” an old Nordstrom gift card in the bowels of my wallet—I thought it may be for a couple of bucks—but I later found it was worth $20.10. Nordstrom Rack is the type of store in which you need time to look through everything. Since I had Chippy in the car, my time was limited. I checked the shoe racks out but they were such a disgusting mess I couldn’t go on. However, I did spot a very cute “Channel-esque” jacket for $22.20. It was a Medium Petite but I tried it on anyway. It fit beautifully. One thing I’ve learned over the years is that Petite sizing can be great for coats and jackets. The arms are cut shorter and can make for a better fit—no tailoring!

My 2.10 buy of the year.

Two Dollars and Ten Cents worth of versatility!!!  I love this jacket!

I also love the look of jackets like this. The versatility of the jacket allows for a great look at the office, for a night out and is great to dress up a pair of jeans a bit. I know this jacket will get lots of use. Thanks to my forgotten gift card, I only paid $2.10 for this gem of a jacket. The deal of the year—so far! You have no idea how much I love me a great bargain.

Random Notes: A day later and the leg on the left, the Neutrogena gradual tanned leg, is darker than the Jergens gradual tanned leg.

One day latert he neutrogena left leg is looking more tan

Left leg is definitely darker!

Had a nice five Point Lunch.  Thinly sliced smoked salmon atop thin Rosemary-infused crackers! Yum! ( Rosemary crackers–9 of ’em are 1 point!)

The 5 point lunch

Delicious and healthy!

Have a great afternoon. Here’s some Doors. Since I’m waiting for the next snow storm, enjoy some “Riders on the Storm” (I know it’s about rain, but we’re getting that too!) XOXOXOXO–from my big, glossy mouth!

I Need A Project!

So I’m thinking—I need a project. I’m itching to paint walls or refinish a piece of furniture.

DIY

I need something to work on!

Alas, since I’m without income for now, the pragmatic side of me decided to hold off on the bathroom until I find a job.   After some discussion, Monsieur Bonaparte agreed—I don’t want to dip into savings. The chateau already has two full baths and a half bath. We’ll just go with the backsplash for now!

Here’s where my thriftiness and savoir faire come in handy. We need something to house the TV in our bedroom. For now, (and as long as I’ve known Bonaparte) the TV is sitting on this monstrosity of a stand.

This TV stand is as ugly as homemade sin! I’m not kidding. If I can paint it black and replace those horrible fabric bins with black trellis bins, it wouldn’t look as bad.

better storage cube

Am I right? Wouldn’t this kind of fabric bin look better?

It’ doesn’t blend in with our “décor”. The bedroom’s furniture is black—with the exception of an antique chest of drawers I purchased 30 years ago (I paid $25.00 for it in a junk shop).

BedI really like this bed.

..and the rest of the black mismatched furniture….even…

antique drawerThis looks good with the rest of the furniture too…but that TV stand–UGH!

OK—now here’s the deal. We moved into our home less than a year ago, and we are taking our time decorating. However, in the meantime, I think if I painted that fugly shelf black and replaced those god-awful fabric cubes with black trellis print cubes it would look a heck of a lot better.

Bonaparte says “Non”!!!   Why? He seems to think that because I’m a total car slob, and because I’m a messy chef, my painting skills follow suit. He’s right but I clean up well!

I’ve also been on the lookout for bar stools for the kitchen.

barstools and paintBar stools go here!  Paint is needed too!

The frugality and thriftiness of it all has me looking at Craigslist.  Jeez. Craigslist used to have fantastic buys on everything. Now it’s a showcase for dealers and less for owners. Check this out!

Am I missing something? These are ridiculously overpriced and not pretty! The dealers are nuts!

Nice but I would only pay 150 tops for all rather than 375This is $375 for three. For sale by owner. I would pay tops $150 for the three, and then I would have to re-cover the seats.

I miss Princeton’s trash days! I’ll just have to wait for the warm weather, garage sales and flea markets!

Anyway, since my legs are so pale, I decided to conduct a couple of experiments. (See how much fun boredom can be!) I fake tanned my right leg with Jergens Natural Glow in Fair to Medium and my left leg with Neutrogena Build-a-tan. Neutrogena is a control your shade.  I’m a huge fan of the fake tan—since my Mohs surgery five years ago; I really make sure to protect my skin these days. In addition, I cannot stand panty hose. Panty hose is just a petri dish for yeast infections. That being said, here’s my before pics and another pic that I took 4 hours later.

The Jergens actually was better to apply, it was not as “liquidy” and blended in much quicker than the Neutrogena.  These are the Before pics.

after still more is neededAfter–not much of a difference. I definitely need another coat. I am THAT pale!

My legs were so pale that I’ll need another coat of tanner.   Actually, my favorite faux tanner is the “Tan Towel” brand.

tan_towel

My personal favorite fake tanner. I’m all out!

I liken Tan Towel to a tanning baby wipe. You just wipe it on in a circular motion. It doesn’t smell bad. It doesn’t leave a “film” the way the lotions do.However, the tan towels aren’t as moisturizing as the lotions. During the summer, I’ll apply both a lotion AND the Tan Towels to get my legs looking faux tan fabulous!

Reminder to self:  Pick up some Tan Towel when you go to Sephora or Ulta!

I also decided to experiment with O’Keeffe’s Working Hands hand cream.

Okeefes working hands why not on the feetSqueezing even more fun to my boredom, I decided to use this on my heels!

I used it on the heels of my feet. Yeah. My heels. I have absolutely NO idea what happened to my poor little feet this winter, but I’ve never had an issue with dry skin on my heels. Take a look if you dare—it is so disgusting and gross. I almost got sick at my own feet! This is a first!   I swear I cannot even go for a Pedi until my feet look better.   Here’s the before pic.

Grossest foot pic everSo truly disgusting. See what a giver I am–I’m putting my worst foot forward for you!

The O’Keeffe’s is nice and thick and really soaks deep into the skin.  I put socks on and waited–

heel looks better

The heels aren’t completely “healed” but I’m impressed. I’ll use this for a few days and see what happens! Looks 95 percent better!

Four  hours later. I’m impressed with this O’Keeffe’s cream. I’ll be using this  until my heels are in good enough shape to be presentable for a Pedi. God knows I will need one after this arduous winter!

I’m going to enjoy my cuppa Barry’s tea now and study for tomorrow evening’s French class.

project monday 033

The kettle is always on the stove!

Au revoir mes amis! Enjoy the rest of this day!

I leave you with “Monday, Monday” by the Momas and Papas! XOXOXOXO

Some Snow, A Spa, A Sigh—But A Great Sunday!

March 1st! In 20 days it’ll be spring. I can practically hear those little purple crocuses trying, with all their might, to fight their way through the frozen ground.

109742-421x279-Crocus

I dunno know if we’ll see these little cuties any time soon due to the snow!

Like Rosanna Arquette was desperately seeking Susan, these little flowers are desperately seeking the warmth of the sun…and any day now they will be greeting us! That is hopefully any day. The snow started early and is still going strong hours later!

saddy sunday 032Perhaps March will exit like a lamb now that she came in like a lion!

Today, I should be trying to contain my happiness that spring is almost here; instead I woke up saddened and did manage to shed a few tears. Luckily Monsieur Bonaparte sat me down and gave me a comforting lecture talk. I was a bit upset about the employment situation—especially when all the ads on TV these days are about healthcare and medication and disease! Really, what’s a hypochondriac without healthcare and no job supposed to do? Besides, I want the large Louie “Neverfull” bag along with a pair of Louboutin pointy-toed pumps and I can’t spend that kind of money until I have a job.

neverfullNo can buy now…..

loubs

This will have to wait too–but will look so incredible on my feet when the time comes!

*sob**sob**sniff*sniff*!

What to do to lift my spirits? I decided have a little DIY “Spa” Day!

best_diy_spa_treatments_rhzqn

I’m going to pamper myself later today!

But first things first. Bonaparte and I cleared out the old Ikea bookshelf to make way for the one which will be delivered this week. We moved the Ikea shelving to the garage—it’ll be good for storage. There is always a wonderful repurpose in life!

Ikea will be sent to the garage

This old Ikea bookshelf has held up for a remarkably long time–but now it’ll be used for storage in the garage.  It’s an old “Billy” shelf–and was well-worth the price!

That old bookshelf held a tremendous amount of books–didn’t it?

That outta the way, I took Chippy and we went off to make some spa purchases. Since I’m cutting corners on my personal purchases (see- I am a giver. I’m making Bonaparte’s life easier by being thrifty!) I drove to Walmart where toiletries are a lot less expensive. I picked up….

Spa time!

My Spa purchases included Jergens “original scent” OMG-I LOVE that smell, facial masks, exfoliating scrub, and an exfoliating cloth.

…and I also got this package of washcloths–18 for 3.97. I have a “thing” about clean, white washcloths for my face!

Washcloths

One can never have enough washcloths. Never!

Guess what else I found??? Physician’s Formula Eye Booster Lash Extension Kit. $12.97.   It was such a thrill to find this. I almost started jumping up and down with glee! This is the greatest lash product and it is half the price of any high end mascara. It’s the little things that can make us so happy at times—isn’t it?

Lash Extensions!

Walmart has it!!!!!  I’ve had a hard time finding this for a repurchase! The greatest Lash product ever! Of all time! I love this stuff!

It’s always fun to find furniture and decorative objects with character. That’s one of the reasons I love vintage, flea market, and other “old” finds! So on the way back home I stopped at “Nest”—it’s a very unique home décor store not far from where we live. I saw this store from afar and was so curious—I’m so glad I “discovered” it! An Empty “Nest”ers Delight!!!!

Nest logoA great home décor, furniture, and fun store. Like a grandma’s attic or garage–it’s stuffed with treasures!

If Chippy wasn’t with me, I could have spent hours in this place! There’s a ton of great, great old furniture, decorative pieces and many other items of interest.

Funky, Fun, Fabulously Fantastic! The black drawer–some chalk paint and sanding and you’ve got a great piece! I need to return. Soon!

It’s definitely going to be a store I’ll be visiting again and again.   I did manage to come away with a scarf. More plaid!

Yet, another plaid scarf

Who knew a great plaid scarf could be found in a home décor shop! I love it!

Like I’ve said, plaid is my favorite color!

My spa afternoon continues.

Is not green on meThe Peel-off mask wasn’t green as advertised, but it did make my skin feel really great!

After a hot, relaxing bath, I exfoliated and moisturized then applied this peel-off mask while I attempted to paint my toes—which was impossible with Chippy sniffing around. Here’s the outcome!

Why I go to the nail place

THIS is the outcome when your dog won’t leave you along. THIS is why I get my toes painted at the nail salon!

Chippy in the corner of the sofaYeah, Chippy, you can run–but you can’t hide. And stop being so cute and smug!

Oh…and here’s the picture of the Vietnamese Lemongrass Chicken I made last night. I didn’t top with the peanuts though; I served them on the side, because Monsieur Bonaparte is not fond of them! It turned out great—and there’s just enough left over for one serving, which Bonaparte will enjoy as a snack!

The finished dish–presented without the peanuts. My serving has those nuts..and they added a nice crunchy, nutty flavor! Over Jasmine rice–Yum!

You know, Sunday may have started out a bit sad for me, but it turned out to be a very productive and fun day filled with pampering and discoveries. Sometimes a day can start off sad—but  ALWAYS gets better and better!

Here’s a nice tune by Velvet Underground—”Sunday Morning”. Enjoy! OXOXOXOXO!

The Spicy Chronicles Continue–and A Twin Too!

What a nice Saturday morning! For once there is not a cloud in the sky. I hear a little bird chirping, it almost feels like spring truly is on her way. The frozen left over snow isn’t even bothering me!

Bonaparte still has his cold and the prep work for our dinner has already been started. Tonight, I’m making my version of Vietnamese Lemongrass Chicken. My friend and ex-coworker, Nam, gave me a basic recipe a while back, and I’ve added and improvised to fit our tastes! I’ve written the recipe down for you in the best way that I could. It’s funny-when I’m cooking a meal, I’ll follow exact instructions the first time I make it—then I’ll play with it from then on. Luckily Bonaparte and I both like our spicy food “spicy”! Just like us–woo woo!

Wonder-50-Chili-Pepper-Static-ImageThis recipe is hot stuff!–Well, not TOO hot!

I also want to say that sometimes lemongrass can be difficult to find. I’ve been lucky in finding it at Wegman’s. I’ve been even luckier to have another ex-coworker give me some from his garden.

Lemon-grass-sliced1

Lemongrass stalks–they can be difficult at times to track down!

What I did find was a “condensed” version of lemongrass in a squeezable tube. I use it when I cannot find the real deal.

us-organic-lemon-grass-tube

This is a GREAT alternative to the actual stalks of lemongrass.

Now, listen to me on this. Please. Real lemongrass is very fibrous, and is difficult to cut thinly. It is used for flavor because it is extremely aromatic—and it gives a lovely, lovely taste to the dish you are making—so my advice is this: If you see a recipe that calls for lemongrass, hunt that stuff out because it is needed. However, if you can find the squeeze tube of lemongrass, purchase it! You still get that great aromatic flavor without the fibrous feel and texture of the stalks.

Here’s my recipe:

Ingreeds: 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken thighs and 1 pound of boneless, skinless chicken breasts. 2 ounces fish sauce. 2 ounces Chicken Stock. 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. 2 ounces Grapeseed oil. 1 red onion, peeled and cut into larger pieces. 1 glove of elephant garlic, peeled. Lemongrass (either the tube or 2 stalks of lemongrass 1 stalk minced and the other stalk cut thinly on the diagonal for garnish). 4 or 5 serrano peppers, sliced-3 for the marinade and the rest for garnish. 2 ounces of Sake or other rice wine. 2 tablespoons of fermented red pepper paste (can be found in the Asian aisle of supermarkets). 1/2 cup of Coconut milk (you can use the lite kind if you want)2 green onions, sliced and cut on the diagonal. 2 tablespoons roasted, salted peanuts, chopped for the garnish.

Ingreeds all

It may look like a lot of ingredients, but after the initial purchase, you’ll have these on hand for future use. It’s all good!

Breasts and thighs cut up

For the most part, I cut the fat off the chicken, but I leave some on–a little is good for flavor!

NOTE: I realize this looks like a ton of ingredients, but you will have them for a long time—so it’s good for future cooking purposes. Also, if you chopping skills are garbage like mine are kitchen shears are the way to go. I swear to you, I use shears for cutting meat, and the green onion and so many things. Just wanted to share that with youJ

  1. First make the marinade. Get a large bowl. Into the bowl, measure out the fish sauce, stock, oil, fermented pepper paste, a good squeeze of the tube of lemongrass—or one stalk of the minced lemon grass, the sake, the sliced serranos, the green onion (set aside a few slices for garnish) and sugar. Whisk together and put it aside.

Squeezing the lemongrass into the marinadeAdding the lemongrass to the marinade–I used the squeeze tube!

whisking the marinadeWhisk and set aside.

OK—next make a paste out of the peeled clove of elephant garlic (As I’ve stated yesterday, I like elephant garlic because it’s milder). Cut the clove lengthwise in half and discard that middle stem. Continue cutting the garlic and place it in a mortar of a mortar and pestle set. (If you don’t have a mortar and pestle you can make a paste by chopping and pounding down with the blade of a knife). Sprinkle a bit of salt to speed of the making of the paste. Add the paste to the marinade mix and incorporate by additional  whisking.

Garlic ready to be pounded into a paasteSprinkle a bit of salt, and grind till a soft paste is made. Then add to the marinade.

Cut the chicken on about 2 to 3 inch chunks and add to the marinade.

Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

Ready to pop into the fridgeChicken added and ready for the fridge!

ANOTHER NOTE: See this “Stretch-tite” plastic wrap? I purchased it at Wegman’s on a whim. It was $2.89 for 250 feet. I’m so disappointed in “Glad Wrap” it doesn’t cling! Anyway, this “Stretch-tite” brand is amazing!!! The “cling” is greatness and it sticks solid. I’m sold on this stuff! Just wanted to share!

Stretch titeThis is the best-ever cling wrap! I love it.

While the prep work is being done, take the red onion, peel it, cut it into big pieces and put it in a Ziploc bag and place in the fridge—this way you’ll have less work to do later!

Red onion cut and baggedPreparation makes cooking so much easier–and less messier later on!

Cooking time!   Pour a tablespoon of grapeseed oil into a Dutch oven and sweat the red onion.

Sizzling onionsSweat that onion!  BTW, I love my Le Creuset Dutch Oven, it cooks very evenly and looks nice at the table as well.

When the onion is transparent, take the chicken from the marinade and brown the chicken.

Chicken browningBrowning the chicken but saving the marinade.

DON’T THROW THE MARINADE OUT! After the chicken browns, add the marinade. Add the Coconut milk and cook for about a half hour on a low heat. If you want, you can add more pepper past to taste or play around with the recipe.

Adding the coconut milkPour the coconut milk in, stir and let cook!

Serve on a platter, spoon some of the sauce over the chicken, and put the rest of the sauce in a gravy boat. Top with chopped peanuts, the remainder of the green onion, lemongrass and sliced peppers.  Serve with Jasmine rice on the side.

Jasmine rice

Jasmine rice–yum. So aromatic!

I will post a picture of the completed dish tomorrow. The food is cooking now and we will be eating later on this evening.  The good thing is that you can make this ahead of time and reheat before serving!

Remember the bookcase we purchased for the family room? Well, we purchased its twin! I put a deposit on it during the week. We went to  Vintage Home  and paid the remaining balance earlier this afternoon.  The moving company we use will be delivering it next week! I’m so excited!

Twin gets delivered next week!I’m so happy we will have a twin to this!

We watched the first two episode of House of Cards last night. It’s somewhat slow but hopefully the pace will get faster!

House-of-CardsThat Kevin Spacey is a spicy fella, he is!

….and speaking of Spacey spicy,  I’ve used so many hot peppers this weekend that…..I can only give you a song by…..the………………Red Hot Chili Peppers! (One of the greatest American bands of all time!) XOXOXOXO!

I gave my recipe away—Give it Away!

It’s A Chili, Glittery Eye Make Up, Joe King Carrasco Kinda Weekend!!!

Happy Friday! Monsieur Bonaparte has a cold. He’s a smart Frenchman, he is! Instead of really “refined” (his words, not mine) dinner fare for the weekend, he’s requested something simple—yet, with heat as to open his nasal passages. Tonight—it’s Chili (I’m not eating it though. I’m not doing meat on Friday during Lent). Simple and easy. I make a large amount.Chili Friday 024That’s a lot of chili for one person this evening!

While we are at the “cooking for two” stage of our lives, when I’m making a one-dish meal, such as this, I don’t do “for two”! Here’s how my Chili rolls:

Ingreeds: 2 pounds of chop meat—the 10 percent fat kind. One large sweet onion, two green peppers, three or four serrano peppers, Cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin powder, 2 cans Rotel tomatoes, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 2 cans kidney beans—bean liquor included. 1 clove Elephant garlic. Salt, to taste. Olive Oil. Optional: Sour cream, cilantro.

When it comes to chopping, I’m lazy. Peel the onion and cut it into larger pieces.   Cut the two green peppers in large pieces and get rid of the seeds. Peel the Elephant garlic clove (I use the elephant garlic because it’s milder than regular garlic). Cut the stems off the Serrano peppers.

Place the above ingredients in the food processor and pulse until minced.

Add olive oil (eyeball it) into the pot and add the minced vegs. Turn the heat onto high and sweat the veg.

Add the chopped meat. The 10 percent fat that’ll be in the meat will give the chili extra flavor.

Add the beans with the bean liquor—it’ll cook down.

Add the dry spices. Listen—I cannot tell you how much to add because I use the spices very liberally.

Turn the heat down to med low and cook about 20 minutes.

Then…add the tomato paste and the Rotel tomatoes. Simmer for about 40 minutes, don’t forget to stir every once in a while.

Serve with rice…or top it off with a dollop of sour cream and a sprig of cilantro. Your choice.Chili MagicThis is the stuff that makes the Chili magic–and will clear Bonaparte’s sinuses!

It’s a very simple recipe—and stores well in the freezer or fridge. Since I have French class on Tuesday evenings, it’s the kind of dish that can be reheated when we get home from class. (Our night out—I go to class, Bonaparte runs errands. I don’t have to drive in the dark!) Seriously, I think the term “cooking for two” can be broad—you can always make a good sized “one dish meal” and reheat it for the convenience!

Earlier today I met two of my favorite ex-coworkers for lunch. We worked together handling the finances for my last job. Both are CPA’s and are now employed. I miss them so much—and it was finally fun to just sit down, enjoy lunch and catch up on each other’s families. You know who your true work buddies are when you continue to socialize when the job ends—am I right or what??

Anyway, I wanted to look really nice. This morning I decided to go with a different eye look. I applied my usual “Well Rested” concealer all over my lids, in the corners and under the lids. God. I love “Well Rested” so much. It really is an essential in my cosmetics supply.

Stila Air from In the Know Palette“Air” from Stila’s “In The Know” Palette. I cannot stop hitting pan!

Air on my lid and all overApplied to entire lid and under brow–and naturally over my “Well Rested”!

Did the brows, then I took my Stila “In the Know” palette out of hiding and brushed “Air” on my lid and under the brow bone. I’ve hit pan on most of this palette. It’s a definite favorite of mine!

Sephora Good fortune cookie No70 Wet DownI don’t care how old and crepey and wrinkly my eyes are–I love glittery gold!

Next, I applied Sephora “Good Fortune Cookie No. 70” eye shadow on my lids. I wanted the shimmer to be stronger so I wet the brush then applied the shadow. I know, I know, I know—all the beauty experts advise against women my age wearing shimmery and glittery shadow. But I say—if you like it, why not? I don’t think it looks bad at all.

Trish McEvoy purple on my eyeI blended this purple Trish McEvoy shadow in the crease and added another layer!

I wanted definition in the crease of my lid—my lids are semi-hooded, so I try to give them more depth. Today I took my Trish McEvoy planner out, unzipped it, took out my small slanted brush and applied a deep purple to the crease and the edge of my lid.

*NOTE: I have to get this off my chest. I was suckered some years ago into the purchase of this McEvoy Planner. Honest to god I don’t know how on earth I ended up spending $400.00 on the planner, brushes and makeup. McEvoy has the most aggressive sales assistants I’ve ever come across. The eye shadows have a tremendous amount of fallout. The concealers are way too dark. And the product doesn’t last. It’s overpriced. I know I’ll get flamed because so many women swear by Trish McEvoy, but I’m not a fan. The planner sits on my makeup desk but I like to keep it around in plain sight as a reminder to not make foolish purchases. I do use the eye shadows now and then—like I did today. But I would never repurchase a McEvoy product. Lesson learned. Pics below!

Check the fallout on the purple shadow. It’s ridiculous. The planner holds a lot, but I’m not crazy about it nor am I crazy about the price or the quality of the products.

That Physician’s Formula Eye Booster Lash Extension Kit—what can I say? Look at the eyes after one application.

First coat lash extensionOne application. I love this Physician’s Formula Lash Extension Kit!

Eye booster look for it and buy itBuy it if you see it! I cannot say enough about it!

I’ll tell you this—if you are out and about and spot this, pick it up and run with it. I’ve been making it a point with each drugstore visit to look for it, and I’m shaking my head because it’s been sold out. Next time I spot this, I’m buying two! I love this so much that I’m being stingy and only wearing it for special days and nights out!

I drew a thin line with my NYColor Liquid Liner, tight lined with my UD pencil and went over the liner with the same black shadow I use on my brows.

A Neyes LookAlmost done. Sorry that my eyes are super-crossed today. They are a bit strained!

Hey—I even applied mascara and a bit of smudgy liner to the bottom lashes and lid!

Special occasions call for the bottom of the eyes to get “done”! OMG. My eyes–so crossed! The great thing about crossed eyes is that I get to see everyone and everything twice! Like a two-for-one sale!

To finish the face, I went with an oldie but goodie on the cheeks–Benefit’s Dandelion and on the lips I applied Lancôme’s “Pale Lip Cream” that I got as a sample, Channel’s Gossamer Gloss #347, and Neutrogena’s Lip Soother in “Gleam 40”.

Lips and Cheeks kept neutral!

Face all done and ready to get dressed.

Face done time to get dressedTime to get dressed!

Let’s face it. With no job to report to, I’m a bit more relaxed in my wardrobe – and lately my look is bordering on “au slob” rather than “au nice”! Anyway, I wore dark indigo skinny jeans from Gap, Navy chunky turtleneck from J. Crew and my brown knee-high Hinge Boots.

Sorry for using stock photos–these are the items I wore, but I am proudly more beefy!

With a bit of time to kill, I went over to KOP mall to finally check out those metallic flats. They were in stock, but it was too much of a bother for me to take the boots off, then the socks, and then put the socks back on…so I ended up purchasing a black Tilly sweater. It was on sale. Here’s what it looks like. I didn’t try it on. To tell you the truth, I cannot stand trying clothing on in the winter. Like with the shoes, the jacket, scarf, sweater, all have to come off then to put everything back on is just—“ugh”—especially when you don’t have a lot of time. Here’s the sweater. It looks boxy but I tried it on when I got home and it fits nicely. Chili Friday 027

It looks much better on my body than flat on the sofa!

It’s a shorter length but will look great with skirts. I can wear it to work—when I become reemployed!

That’s about it for today! I’m finishing the afternoon off by taking care of the Chili. And my Lenten dinner will be a flatbread spinach pizza. All followed by HOUSE OF CARDS!!!! SEASON THREE RETURNS TONIGHT!!!!

House-of-Cards-Season-3Tonight’s the night! No different than real-life politicians!

Kevin Spacey is sooooooooo deliciously devilish and naughty!

What makes Friday even happier? Joe King Carrasco—that’s who! I love his happy party so much that I’m giving you TWO doses of Joe King today: “Buena” and “Nacho Daddy”!  I want to dance around now!  XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO!!!!
